OBS’s Automatic Reconnect setting can retry a dropped connection while OBS is still running; it does not restart the OBS application after a crash. To relaunch a crashed OBS process, you need a separate restart mechanism on the computer’s operating system. The exact setup depends on whether you use Windows, macOS, or Linux, so there is no single safe set of OS instructions for every reader. YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings control how YouTube responds to encoder data; they do not relaunch OBS either.
The same distinction applies in India as elsewhere: the relevant controls are in OBS, YouTube Studio, and your computer’s operating system.

First identify what actually failed
“The stream stopped” can describe three different failures. The fix depends on which component stopped working:

These controls do different jobs. An OBS reconnect attempt cannot start an application that has exited, and YouTube’s encoder controls cannot open OBS on your computer. OBS’s overview guide describes Automatic Reconnect as a connection setting, not an application-restart feature. YouTube explains its encoder controls in Manage live stream settings.

For a dropped connection, check OBS Automatic Reconnect
- In OBS, open Settings > Advanced.
- Find Automatic Reconnect and check that it is enabled.
- Test the setup before an important broadcast. Confirm whether OBS reconnects after a controlled network interruption and check YouTube’s Live Control Room for the incoming feed and stream health.
This applies only while OBS remains open and able to retry the connection. It is not a guarantee that a particular YouTube broadcast, video URL, or recording will continue unchanged after an interruption.
For an OBS crash, use a separate process restart mechanism
If OBS exits, something outside OBS must notice that the process has stopped and start it again. That could be an OS-level supervisor or other operating-system automation, but the appropriate method and configuration depend on your OS and how OBS is installed. Because those details are not specified here, this guide does not give Windows, macOS, or Linux commands that could be wrong for your setup.
Before configuring a restart, decide what “recover” means for your stream. Relaunching OBS is not the same as verifying that the encoder is sending data, that YouTube accepts it, or that viewers return to the same broadcast. The official materials cited here do not guarantee that a process restart preserves the same broadcast, video URL, or recording continuity.

- Identify your operating system and OBS installation before choosing a supervisor or restart method.
- Decide whether you need recovery after an OBS crash only, or also after the computer reboots. Those are separate requirements; the latter is not established by the OBS or YouTube settings discussed here.
- Protect your YouTube stream key as a credential. Do not expose it in screenshots, logs, or scripts.
- Test the whole chain—OBS exit, relaunch, encoder feed, and YouTube’s response—before relying on it for an event.
Check YouTube’s encoder start and stop behavior
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, review the stream’s Auto-start and Auto-stop selections if you want YouTube to respond to the encoder starting or stopping. YouTube says these selections can be copied when reusing stream settings. They affect YouTube’s handling of encoder data; they do not restart OBS.
A stream key is the credential used by an encoder to send a feed for YouTube to accept. Keep it private. If you reuse stream settings, check that the selected stream and key are the ones OBS is configured to use.
Test and troubleshoot before relying on automatic recovery
Run a realistic test
OBS recommends testing the setup before the first live stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video activity similar to the event, monitoring stream health, and choosing quality that is reliable for the available internet connection. A test should cover the failure you expect: a brief network loss tests reconnect behavior, while closing or crashing OBS tests process supervision. One test does not prove that the other recovery path works.

If OBS is open but YouTube has lost the feed
- Check whether OBS is still attempting to reconnect and whether the internet connection is available.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room for stream health and whether encoder data is arriving.
- Use YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps if the stream will not start or appears unhealthy.
If OBS has exited and did not return
- Check whether the operating-system restart mechanism is configured to detect an exited OBS process and launch it. OBS Automatic Reconnect cannot do this.
- Check whether the computer itself is still on and whether the restart mechanism is permitted to run in the current user session.
- After OBS opens, verify the selected stream and that the encoder feed reaches YouTube; an application relaunch alone does not confirm a successful broadcast recovery.
If YouTube does not show a healthy incoming stream
YouTube’s troubleshooting sequence includes updating the encoder, inspecting the picture and sound in the encoder, checking encoder errors and CPU load, assessing outbound internet, and updating the stream key in the encoder if the start error calls for it. For encoder configuration, YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video codec options, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. These are encoder and stream-health details, not settings that supervise or relaunch the OBS process. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

If OBS performance is poor
Resource contention or GPU overload can affect encoding performance. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide discusses reducing workload. That is useful diagnostic context, but poor performance alone does not establish what caused a particular crash.
