How to Run a 24/7 Ocean Waves YouTube Stream on a Low-Power Mini PC

A practical OBS walkthrough for running a looping ocean-waves YouTube livestream from a low-power mini PC, plus a cloud alternative if you do not want a computer running at home.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a looping ocean-waves livestream on YouTube with OBS on a low-power mini PC: load locally stored video and audio, enable looping, configure a supported encoder, and keep the computer and a reliable internet connection running. The exact PC matters—test the intended media, resolution, frame rate, and encoder before going public. If you do not want a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative for looping uploaded videos on YouTube.

Before you start: channel access, media rights, and expectations

Make sure YouTube Live is enabled

Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so complete it well before your planned launch. Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio when you are ready to configure the encoder. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains the account requirements.

Use media you have permission to stream

Use ocean video and audio that you created or are licensed to use for the intended purpose. Confirm that the permission covers livestreaming, looping, monetization if relevant, and the geographic reach of your channel. YouTube advises creators to respect audio and video rights in its live-streaming tips. Keep the license or other permission record; a recording that is free to download is not automatically cleared for a continuous YouTube broadcast.

Prepare the mini PC for continuous streaming

The computer must decode the source media, composite the OBS scene, encode the output, and send it continuously. Low power alone does not establish that a mini PC can handle a particular stream: capability depends on its hardware encoder, operating system, OBS configuration, resolution, frame rate, media, and cooling.

Where the system supports it and the resulting image quality is acceptable, a hardware encoder can move encoding work off the CPU. OBS documents Intel Quick Sync support on Windows and Linux with compatible integrated graphics. Its guidance recommends Haswell-generation Intel Core processors or newer for Quick Sync because earlier generations can deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate. This is general encoder guidance, not a performance guarantee for a specific mini PC. See the OBS hardware encoding guide.

  • Install a version of OBS that runs on your operating system.
  • Check that the PC can play the chosen video and audio smoothly before adding the streaming workload.
  • Test the exact scene, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you plan to use. No model-specific benchmark establishes that a particular low-power PC will run this workload reliably.
  • Allow for ongoing heat and system stability: a short successful test does not prove the machine will stay reliable indefinitely.

Build a looping ocean scene in OBS

  1. Add the video: In OBS, add a Media Source and select the locally stored ocean video. OBS supports common video formats; if the file does not load, check its format and whether it plays correctly outside OBS.
  2. Enable looping: Open the Media Source properties and select Loop. The source restarts when playback reaches the end.
  3. Set up audio deliberately: If the video already contains waves audio, do not add a second copy of the same sound. If you use separate audio, add it as its own source and enable looping for that source as appropriate.
  4. Inspect the loop point: Let the complete file play through and check the restart for a visible jump, silence, clicks, or audio/video mismatch. A loop setting repeats the file; it does not make a poor edit seamless.
  5. Check the scene: Confirm the image fills the intended canvas without unwanted borders or cropping, and verify that the audio meter responds during playback.

OBS documents the Media Source and its loop option in its media sources guide. Keep the source files accessible at the same paths after setup; moving or renaming them can leave OBS unable to find the media.

Connect OBS to YouTube and choose stream settings

  1. Create the YouTube stream: In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a livestream and open its stream settings.
  2. Copy the ingest details: Copy the server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube describes stream keys as the password and address an encoder uses to send a feed. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  3. Select the ingest protocol: For normal encoder ingest, YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. If you choose HLS instead, follow YouTube’s distinct requirements: HLS has higher latency than RTMP, uses a rolling playlist, and requires transport-stream segments of one to four seconds. For a non-interactive ocean ambience stream, latency may be less important than stable delivery; use a protocol your encoder supports and configure it to YouTube’s current requirements. Details are in YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison.
  4. Set output to match your source and connection: Choose a resolution and bitrate supported by YouTube for the output you want. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table rather than assuming a bitrate based on a mini PC’s advertised specifications.
  5. Use the recommended encoder basics: Set bitrate control to constant bitrate (CBR), the keyframe interval to two seconds (YouTube says not to exceed four seconds), and audio to AAC or MP3. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance provides its current recommendations.

Higher resolution and frame rate require more encoding capacity and upload bandwidth. Start with settings that the PC and connection can sustain, then check stream health rather than treating a successful connection as proof that the picture and sound are stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give the stream enough upload capacity

Measure sustained outbound upload under realistic network use; download speed alone does not answer whether the stream can be sent reliably. YouTube recommends upload capacity at least 20% above the stream bitrate and warns that connection disruptions can break a stream. Leave additional margin if other people or devices regularly use the connection. The recommendation appears in YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Operate the stream, plan for failures, and understand archives

For a local OBS setup, the mini PC must stay powered, OBS must remain open and sending valid media, and the internet connection must hold. A reboot, update, application failure, or network interruption can stop the broadcast. Arrange a way to notice a failure and be able to restore the PC and stream; this setup is not unattended simply because the media loops.

YouTube says livestreams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete archive. If replay matters, plan periodic restarts that keep each stream within the documented window, or use a separate recording process. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Local mini PC or cloud hosting?

OBS on a mini PC gives you direct control over the scene and uses hardware you already own, but the computer, power, cooling, and home connection all remain part of the operating setup. Hosted streaming shifts the playback and stream operation to a service; YouTube’s encoder guide recognizes cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded streaming as a category, but that does not make every hosted service equivalent. Consider whether you can recover a local failure, whether the encoder meets your quality needs, how stable your upload is, and whether you need a complete archive.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. The product is the same on every plan; only the billing length changes. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube will not accept the stream or the stream key Live streaming is not enabled, the key or server URL is incorrect, or the key was changed. Confirm channel eligibility and live-stream activation in YouTube Studio, then copy the current server URL and key again. Keep the key private.
OBS cannot find or play the ocean file The file path changed, the file format is unsupported, or the file itself does not play correctly. Confirm the file exists at the path selected in the Media Source and test playback. OBS’s media-source guide lists supported formats.
The picture freezes, drops frames, or looks poor The PC may not sustain decoding, compositing, and encoding at the selected output, or the connection may lack headroom. Check OBS and YouTube stream health, then test a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. Verify that the selected hardware encoder is available and supported on the actual system.
The stream disconnects Upload instability or a network interruption can break delivery. Check sustained upload under realistic use, leave at least YouTube’s recommended 20% bitrate headroom, reduce competing uploads, and test Ethernet if available.
Audio is doubled, silent, or clicks at the restart The video and a separate audio source may both contain the same sound, the source may not loop as intended, or the edit may have a gap or abrupt boundary. Check which source carries audio, remove duplicate playback, enable looping on the intended source, and listen through a full loop transition.
The mini PC works initially but later stops OBS, the operating system, power, or network may have failed; a short test cannot establish long-term reliability. Check the machine and OBS state, restore the stream in YouTube Studio, and plan how you will detect and recover from interruption.
A 24-hour broadcast has no complete replay YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a complete uninterrupted day-long broadcast. Use planned restarts within the archive window or make a separate recording if a complete replay is required.
