How to Set Up Multiple Scenes for a Prerecorded YouTube Live Channel in OBS

Create OBS scenes for an opening, prerecorded program, intermission, and ending. Learn when to use Media Source or VLC Video, how to save settings, and what to test before going live.

In OBS, make a separate scene for each visual segment—such as an opening slate, the prerecorded program, an intermission, and an ending—then add the video and any overlays as sources. Use a Media Source for one local video or a VLC Video source for a playlist. Save the scenes in a Scene Collection, keep stream and output settings in a Profile, and test the complete program before broadcasting.

How OBS scenes and sources fit together

A scene is a layout in the output; sources are the video, text, images, audio, and other elements placed in that layout. Add scenes in the Scenes dock and sources in the Sources dock. Source order controls layering: a source higher in the list appears over sources below it, so place a title or logo above the video when it should remain visible.

For a prerecorded channel, separate scenes make it easier to present distinct visual segments without rebuilding the layout each time. A simple collection might include an opening slate, the main program, an intermission card, and an ending screen.

Create scenes for the program’s segments

  1. Add a scene: In the Scenes dock, create a scene for each distinct visual segment and give it a clear name, such as “Opening,” “Program,” or “Intermission.”
  2. Add its sources: Select the scene, then add the required sources from the Sources dock. For the main program, add the prerecorded video; for other scenes, add the visuals and audio appropriate to that segment.
  3. Arrange the layers: Put overlays such as titles or logos above the video source in the Sources list. Check the preview to confirm that each element is visible and positioned as intended.

Keep the first version straightforward. A scene for every meaningful visual change is useful; creating many nearly identical scenes or layering unnecessary sources makes the setup harder to manage.

Add prerecorded video: Media Source or VLC Video

Option Best for What to know
Media Source One local prerecorded file Select the file and choose playback options such as looping, restarting when the source becomes active, hiding after playback ends, or closing the file while inactive.
VLC Video source A playlist of several files Supports playlists and loop or shuffle controls. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS; OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.

Configure a Media Source for one file

  1. Choose the program scene in the Scenes dock.
  2. Add a Media Source in the Sources dock and select the local video file.
  3. Choose playback behavior to match the program. Enable looping if the file should repeat; use restart-on-activation if returning to the scene should begin the file again. If the ending should remain visible, do not configure the source to hide at playback end. Closing the file while inactive is an available option when appropriate.
  4. Check the preview and audio meters, then test the source through its end or loop transition.

OBS lists supported video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.

Use VLC Video for a multi-file playlist

Install VLC before adding the VLC Video source; it will not appear as an option unless VLC is installed. Match the VLC architecture to OBS—64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC according to OBS documentation. Add the source to the scene, populate its playlist, and select loop or shuffle behavior according to the intended program order.

Save the scene layouts and broadcast settings

OBS keeps scene layouts and stream/output settings in different places. A Scene Collection stores scenes and sources and can be switched for another production. Scene Collections also contain global audio sources. A Profile stores stream, video, and output settings, but does not store scenes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Scene Collection: save the layouts and sources for this prerecorded channel.
  • Profile: save the stream, video, and output settings for the channel.

Use a clearly named collection and profile together for this program. Changing the Profile alone will not switch the scenes; changing the Scene Collection alone will not supply a different set of stream and output settings.

Prepare scene changes and test the output

If someone will advance the program manually, assign a hotkey to switch to each relevant scene. OBS also offers Studio Mode for preparing and previewing scene changes, but the documentation cited here does not establish a built-in timed automation sequence. Do not assume that assigning scenes alone will schedule an unattended sequence.

  1. Review every scene in the preview, including the opening, main video, intermission, and ending.
  2. Confirm source layering, framing, playback behavior, and that the audio meters respond as expected.
  3. Check the Profile’s output and stream settings and confirm that the intended Scene Collection is selected.
  4. Make a short test recording or stream, then review both picture and sound. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes before the first stream.

This workflow covers the OBS-side scene setup. YouTube live-event scheduling, channel eligibility, and ingest settings are not specified here; check current YouTube Help for those platform steps rather than inferring them from OBS scene settings.

Troubleshoot scenes that are slow or do not behave as expected

  • Video covers a title or logo: In the Sources list, move the overlay above the video source.
  • A file does not repeat or restart as intended: Revisit the Media Source playback options, especially loop and restart when source becomes active.
  • The ending disappears: Check whether the Media Source is set to hide after playback ends; change that behavior if the ending should remain on screen.
  • VLC Video is unavailable: Install VLC and verify that its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC.
  • OBS struggles with a complex collection: Simplify scenes and collections, use appropriately sized media, and reduce expensive filters or browser sources. If a large general collection is sluggish, consider a separate Scene Collection for this program.
  • The test does not match the intended broadcast: Check the selected Scene Collection and Profile separately, then verify video, audio meters, and output in another short test.

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only.
