Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To restart FFmpeg automatically, use a process supervisor such as systemd when FFmpeg exits; use FFmpeg’s protocol-specific reconnect options for an input disconnect, or its FIFO muxer recovery options when an output connection fails while FFmpeg is still running. These are different failure modes, and no single option guarantees an uninterrupted stream. The right setup depends on your operating system, FFmpeg build, source protocol, and streaming destination.
First identify what stopped working
Check the FFmpeg process, its logs, and the service or terminal session before choosing a fix. A stream that appears frozen to viewers does not by itself tell you whether FFmpeg exited, lost its input, or can no longer send output.

| What you observe | Likely recovery layer | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg has exited | An external process supervisor can launch it again. | Restarting will not fix a persistent cause such as a missing device, invalid credentials, or bad configuration. |
| FFmpeg is still running, but the output connection failed | FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer has output-side recovery options. | Retry behavior depends on error type and options; it is not a universal reconnect switch. |
| The camera or other input source disconnected | Protocol-specific input reconnect behavior, or a supervisor restart if the chosen configuration makes FFmpeg exit. | Input reconnect options vary by protocol and build. Output-side FIFO recovery does not repair a failed input. |
Keep these distinctions in mind for a Telugu church sermon stream: restarting FFmpeg can restore a process, but it cannot guarantee that the camera, network, host, or destination will be available.

Check the installed FFmpeg build and your setup
- Record the version. Run
ffmpeg -versionon the machine that will run the stream. Options and behavior may differ between builds. - Identify the source and destination protocols. Note whether the source is a camera over RTSP, an HTTP source, a capture device, or something else, and check the destination’s current ingest instructions. The destination and source protocol are not specified here, so a universal copy-paste command would be unsafe.
- Inspect the local help and documentation. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated from the newest revision; the project recommends checking documentation that matches an older local build. See the FFmpeg documentation landing page and the formats documentation for your installed version.
- Review logs and service status. Determine whether FFmpeg exited, is still running but failing to send, or is reporting input errors. Preserve enough logs to diagnose the failure, but do not publish stream keys or other credentials.
Restart FFmpeg when the process exits
On a Linux host using systemd, configure a service to launch the actual FFmpeg command and restart it after it exits. A FFmpeg-user mailing-list post describes one user’s systemd setup with Restart=always and RestartSec=5, alongside an input timeout intended to make FFmpeg exit when an RTSP source is unreachable. This is an individual configuration report, not a tested recipe or a guarantee for other systems, inputs, or systemd setups. See the RTSP reconnect discussion.

Use that report as an example of the recovery pattern, not as a unit file to copy without adaptation. The service needs the correct executable path, user, working directory, environment, input and output settings, and a retry policy appropriate to the host. Keep credentials in protected configuration rather than exposing them in public logs, shell history, or a shared service file.
- Set a delay before retries so a persistent failure does not create a rapid restart loop.
- Check that the failure condition can clear: restarting cannot restore power to a camera, repair a broken route, or correct an invalid destination key.
- Use service status and logs to confirm whether each restart succeeded and why a previous attempt ended.
- Account for destination behavior: a process restart interrupts the outgoing connection, and the receiving service may need time to accept it again.
Recover an output connection without restarting the process
When FFmpeg remains alive but its network output encounters a transient error, the FIFO pseudo-muxer offers output-side options including attempt_recovery, recovery_wait_time, and max_recovery_attempts. The FFmpeg formats documentation also explains that some error classes are not retried by default; recover_any_error broadens the errors eligible for recovery. Consult the FFmpeg formats documentation for syntax and option details that match your build.

Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
Choose these settings for the actual output and failure pattern, and verify their behavior in a safe test. FIFO recovery is not the same as restarting a process that has exited, and it does not resolve an input disconnect. Broadening retries also does not make permanent errors—such as a wrong destination or invalid configuration—recoverable.

Handle input-source drops separately
Input reconnection is protocol-specific. A FFmpeg-user discussion covers reconnect settings for an HTTP input, while the RTSP report describes using a timeout and an external systemd restart when the source is unreachable. Neither example establishes a setting that works for every input type or build. See the HTTP reconnect discussion and the RTSP discussion.

Confirm which protocol is in use, then check the corresponding local FFmpeg documentation for supported reconnect and timeout options. If you configure FFmpeg to exit when the source becomes unavailable, a supervisor can relaunch it; that only helps if the source eventually returns. Do not assume a network-output recovery option will reconnect a camera input.
Test recovery before relying on it
Test one failure at a time during a safe window, with a non-public or otherwise appropriate destination if available. This is a recommended operational check, not a claim that a particular setup has been tested.

- Interrupt the input source briefly and observe whether FFmpeg reconnects, exits, or continues without usable video.
- Separately interrupt the output path and check whether FIFO recovery applies or the process exits.
- Confirm that the supervisor relaunches an exited process after the configured delay and that the destination accepts the returning stream.
- Review logs for repeated failures and verify that stream credentials are not printed or committed to a shared repository.
Common restart and recovery problems
- FFmpeg keeps restarting but never returns to the stream: inspect the first failure in the logs. The source, destination, credentials, or command may still be invalid.
- The process stays up, but viewers see no new video: determine whether the input is producing frames and whether the output is actually recovering. A supervisor usually only acts after the process exits.
- HTTP reconnect options do not help an RTSP camera: reconnect behavior is protocol-specific; check options for the actual input protocol and installed build.
- FIFO recovery does not restore the camera feed: FIFO addresses output-side recovery, not input reconnection.
- Online help shows an option missing from the installed build: compare the online documentation with local version-specific help before changing the command.
- A restart loop repeats every few seconds: add an appropriate retry delay, inspect the underlying error, and avoid treating repeated relaunches as a fix for a permanent failure.
If you generate HLS yourself
For a church serving its own HLS output, FFmpeg’s segment muxer documentation describes generating an M3U8 playlist, including the live playlist-list flag. Segment boundaries depend on video keyframes; the documentation says the muxer works best with a single constant-frame-rate video and warns that cuts may not land accurately at intended times unless keyframes align with them. See the segment muxer documentation. This describes a local HLS workflow; it does not establish that a particular video platform accepts HLS as its ingest method.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded sermon recordings rather than stream a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera.
