How to Restart an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Automatically After a Network Outage

Learn how to configure FFmpeg output recovery for YouTube RTMP interruptions, restart FFmpeg after a process exit, and diagnose unhealthy streams.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an FFmpeg stream sending RTMP to YouTube, use FFmpeg’s fifo pseudo-muxer with output recovery enabled so it can retry after a temporary network failure. If FFmpeg exits, use a service manager such as systemd to restart the process. These are separate safeguards: neither proves YouTube is receiving a healthy stream, so also check the stream’s health in YouTube Live Control Room.

First identify what failed

“The network went down” can mean several different things. The right recovery mechanism depends on whether FFmpeg lost its input, its connection to YouTube, the host’s network connection, or the YouTube stream configuration.

  • FFmpeg’s input failed: An output-recovery option does not necessarily reconnect an input source. HTTP reconnect options apply to HTTP protocol behavior; they are not a general fix for an RTMP output to YouTube.
  • FFmpeg’s RTMP output failed temporarily: The FFmpeg manual documents the fifo pseudo-muxer as an output-side recovery pattern.
  • FFmpeg exited: An external process supervisor can relaunch it.
  • FFmpeg is running but YouTube is not receiving usable media: A process restart policy may not detect this state. Check FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s stream-health status.
  • The stream key or stream settings are wrong: Retries cannot correct invalid configuration or credentials. Check the selected stream in Live Control Room.

Enable FFmpeg output recovery for a temporary RTMP failure

FFmpeg’s manual shows a fifo output pattern intended to keep processing in real time during temporary output failure and attempt recovery. Its relevant options include attempt_recovery, recovery_wait_time and max_recovery_attempts. Check the documentation and option support for the FFmpeg build installed on your machine; exact syntax and availability can vary by build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Keep your working input and encoding setup. Preserve the input, stream mapping, codecs, and destination URL from your existing command.
  2. Use the FIFO pseudo-muxer for the output. The documented pattern includes -f fifo -fifo_format flv before the RTMP destination.
  3. Enable recovery and choose a retry policy. The documented pattern includes -attempt_recovery 1 and a recovery wait setting. Set max_recovery_attempts according to whether you want retries to stop after a limit or continue indefinitely; in the documented interface, zero means unlimited retries.
  4. Add broader retry behavior only deliberately. recover_any_error broadens which failures are retried. That can also cause retries for persistent problems such as configuration or authentication errors, so inspect logs rather than assuming repeated attempts mean recovery is working.
  5. Check the output in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the selected stream reports a healthy incoming feed after a controlled interruption.

The manual’s example is a pattern, not a complete command: its ellipses stand for your real input and settings. Do not paste an incomplete example expecting it to run, and do not change your codecs or stream destination without confirming the syntax for your own command and FFmpeg version.

Use a service manager if FFmpeg exits

FIFO output recovery applies while FFmpeg is running and attempting to recover its output. If the process terminates, an operating-system service manager can relaunch it. For example, systemd can be configured to restart a failed service. A mailing-list example demonstrates that general supervision approach for an RTSP camera recording problem, not a tested YouTube streaming recipe; its timeouts, inputs and service parameters should not be copied as if they were universal.

Configure the service around your own command and verify that it starts with the required environment, permissions and network access. A restart policy handles process exit; it does not necessarily detect a process that is still alive but hung or sending unusable media. Detecting that case requires a separate health check or watchdog strategy.

Confirm YouTube’s stream settings and health

Use the stream URL and stream key for the active YouTube stream in Live Control Room. YouTube describes the stream key as password-like information that directs and authorizes the encoder feed. Keep it private, and update the encoder configuration if you change the key. Inspect the selected stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings instead of assuming they are enabled or disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After reconnecting, check YouTube’s stream-health status and any specific error messages. A live FFmpeg process alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a valid feed or that viewers see uninterrupted playback. YouTube also advises testing encoder failover and monitoring audio and video quality.

Make the network less likely to interrupt the stream

YouTube advises using a reliable connection with sufficient outbound bandwidth and headroom. Its streaming tips warn, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” A wired Ethernet connection may help when the streaming computer supports it and the local wireless link is unreliable. It cannot fix a failed router or ISP, an invalid stream key, an FFmpeg error, or an issue on YouTube’s side.

Troubleshoot common recovery failures

Symptom Likely issue What to check
FFmpeg exits and does not return Output recovery cannot help after process termination. Review FFmpeg’s exit logs and configure a service manager to restart the process after failure.
FFmpeg stays running, but YouTube reports no healthy feed The output may not have recovered, or FFmpeg may be alive without sending usable media. Read FFmpeg logs, verify outbound connectivity and check Live Control Room’s specific stream-health error.
Retries continue without a successful connection The underlying failure may be persistent, such as a bad destination, key, or configuration. Check the active stream URL and key, and review whether broad retry behavior is masking a permanent error.
Changing HTTP reconnect options has no effect on the YouTube output Those options concern HTTP protocol behavior, not a general RTMP output-recovery fix. Use the documented output-side FIFO recovery pattern for RTMP, and separately address any input-side failure.
FFmpeg restarts, but viewers still experience a break Recovery does not guarantee seamless playback or a healthy receiver-side stream. Check YouTube’s stream health and settings after reconnecting, then test the failover path and monitor audio and video.
