First decide what your report’s thumbnail should mean: the image a page declares for social sharing, or a screenshot of the page as rendered in a browser. They are different outputs. Extract Open Graph or Twitter Card metadata to audit declared link-preview assets; render the page when readers need to see its appearance. Label those results separately, and validate the published URL with the relevant social platform’s preview tool.
Choose between a declared share image and a page screenshot
An Open Graph image is a URL in a page’s metadata. It describes an image intended for sharing, but it is not necessarily a screenshot or the image a platform will ultimately display. A browser screenshot shows what a particular viewport rendered at capture time; it does not establish what a social crawler will show.

Fetch the page’s HTML and parse metadata in its document head. The Open Graph protocol defines og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url as core properties. For a report, also consider og:description, og:site_name, locale, and image properties such as og:image:secure_url, og:image:type, og:image:width, og:image:height and og:image:alt. The alt field describes the image.

Read the tags as published rather than assuming the first image-looking URL is correct. The protocol says that when a property has multiple values, the first value from top to bottom takes precedence. Record the resolved image URL and whether your report could fetch it. If you also audit Twitter Card metadata, keep its declared card image distinct from the Open Graph result rather than silently treating the fields as interchangeable.
Generate a rendered thumbnail when appearance matters
Use a browser renderer when the report needs a visual snapshot, including content assembled by JavaScript or pages whose appearance is the subject of the review. Choose a consistent viewport and capture method so thumbnails can be compared meaningfully. Decide whether each image should show the viewport or the full page; a full-page image may be much taller than a social preview crop.
Use a browser you operate
A headless browser such as Playwright or Puppeteer can navigate to each URL, wait for the page to reach the state you want, set a viewport, and save a screenshot. This gives you control over browser configuration and storage, but you must operate the browser infrastructure and handle navigation failures, timeouts, and page-specific behavior yourself. The exact code depends on your runtime and reporting pipeline.

A hosted API can take over browser setup and expose capture controls such as viewport, full-page capture, selectors, format, and delay. Compare the retention policy, available controls, pricing, and network behavior before making it part of a durable reporting workflow. For example, the OpenGraph.io Screenshot API documentation states that generated screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours; because this is vendor behavior and can change, check its current documentation and download or store the image yourself if the report must persist.

Build report records that remain useful
Keep the capture or extraction result alongside enough context to interpret it later. A practical record can include:
- Source page URL and the canonical or declared URL, if available.
- Resolved share-image URL, title and description for metadata results.
- Fetch timestamp, HTTP response result, and image content type and dimensions when obtainable.
- For screenshots, capture method, viewport, and a durable artifact location.
- An error reason when metadata or an image could not be fetched, or a screenshot could not be produced.
This schema is an implementation choice, not a format mandated by the Open Graph protocol or a cited vendor. Keep failures as explicit report values rather than dropping those URLs; otherwise a missing thumbnail can be mistaken for a page that has no share image.
Make images suitable for the intended platform
One image may be cropped or compressed differently across social services. HubSpot’s guidance, updated June 20, 2026, lists these recommendations and maximum file sizes. They are guidance, not a guarantee of how every post or placement will render; verify current platform requirements before publication.

Check crawler access and verify the published preview
Correct metadata is not enough if a social crawler cannot fetch the HTML or the image. Review redirects, response codes, access controls, robots.txt rules, and whether the image URL is publicly reachable. HubSpot’s guidance names Facebook’s facebookexternalhit and X’s Twitterbot as crawler examples and points to LinkedIn’s post inspector. A screenshot from your own browser is not proof that a platform crawler can access the same content.
After publishing, test the URL with the available platform preview debugger or inspector. Metadata extraction confirms what your parser found; it does not guarantee platform rendering. Apple’s developer note TN3156 also describes Open Graph metadata as a way to provide images and captions in Messages previews, but a site’s result still depends on the metadata and access available to that client.
Troubleshoot missing or misleading thumbnails
The report has no declared image
Check the fetched HTML head for og:image and applicable card metadata. Confirm that your parser handles the page’s actual HTML and records the absence explicitly. If the page relies on client-side changes, compare the server-delivered HTML with the rendered DOM; a browser screenshot can show content that a metadata-only fetch did not see.
The image URL exists but cannot be fetched
Inspect redirects, HTTP response status, access controls, and public reachability of the image. A page can be crawlable while its image is blocked or unavailable. Record the response result and error rather than reporting the URL as a usable asset.

A platform preview differs from your screenshot
The two outputs answer different questions: a screenshot records a browser rendering at a chosen viewport, while a social preview depends on crawler access and platform handling of metadata and images. Use the platform’s own debugger or inspector to investigate the published URL.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Check that navigation completed, the page did not time out, and the capture waited long enough for its intended content. For pages that render asynchronously or load images lazily, adjust the capture wait behavior or use a full-page option where appropriate. Preserve the failed capture as an error result; do not pass it off as a valid thumbnail.
The thumbnail is cropped or too large for its destination
Compare the image’s dimensions and aspect ratio with the intended platform and post type. Keep the platform guidance in mind, then check the platform’s current rules; a single image may not suit every placement.
