What a Transmutation respec actually changes
“Respec Transmutation abilities” can mean two different things. In Valor Mortis, the Lantern reset concerns points spent in the character skill tree. That acquisition path is separate from the Lantern’s point-allocation screen. If you are trying to obtain a power you have not encountered, resetting your skills is therefore the wrong solution; you need to continue the progression route that grants it.

Requirements before you start
- Access to a Lantern: The reset is performed from a Lantern rather than from a general pause or inventory screen.
- Available Catalyst: Confirming the reset consumes Catalyst. The amount can rise as your progression or number of previous resets increases.
- A clear reallocation plan: The refunded points are most useful when you already know whether you are correcting stamina and defense, melee damage and health, or Nephtoglobin and Transmutation performance.
- Attention to the current prompt: Menu wording can differ by game version, and the exact controller or keyboard confirmation buttons are not consistently documented. Use the prompt displayed on your platform.
Step-by-step: respec at a Lantern
- Reach a Lantern and rest there. Interact with the Lantern so its hub of character-progression options is available. If you are interacting with another object or menu, the reset command will not appear.
- Enter the level-up or skill menu. Open the option used to spend character skill points. Depending on your version, the heading may be described as level-up, skills, or a similar progression label.
- Find the reset command. Look for wording such as Reset Level, Reset Skills, or Respec. These labels refer to the same general operation: returning allocated points for reassignment.
- Review the Catalyst charge. The confirmation screen should show the fee for this reset. Do not rely on an old guide’s number when the in-game prompt displays a different amount; progression and repeat resets can change the price.
- Confirm using the displayed platform control. Published instructions do not establish one universal keyboard key or controller button. Follow the confirmation and cancel prompts shown by your PC, console, or control scheme.
- Reallocate the refunded points. After the reset, spend the returned points in the attributes and upgrades that address your build’s problem. Relevant documented choices include Transmutation Damage, Nephtoglobin capacity or sufferance, Nephtoglobin Extraction, Nephtoglobin Remnants, Status Buildup, Healing Effectiveness, and upgrades that combine Nephtoglobin and Transmutation benefits.
- Leave the menu only after checking the new allocation. Make sure the points are assigned where you intended before closing the Lantern interface. The reset is a currency purchase, so an unplanned allocation wastes both the opportunity and the Catalyst fee.
Which skill-tree investments can support Transmutation?
The following names are documented as Transmutation-related or closely connected choices in the skill tree. Their names indicate the area they address, but the available documentation does not provide a complete numerical description of every rank or its exact scaling. How to diagnose the confusion
- If the power is already in your collection but performs poorly, inspect the skill tree and consider a damage, status, resource, or healing reallocation.
- If the power is absent from your collection, continue the progression route associated with the relevant unique plague-infected humanoid instead of paying for a reset.
- If your resource runs out during use, examine Nephtoglobin-focused choices and the in-game descriptions before moving points.
How much does a respec cost?
Catalyst is the required currency. Games.gg and Treyex Gaming’s 2026 guides state that the fee becomes more expensive with progression or repeated resets. That means the amount shown at an early Lantern visit should not be treated as a permanent flat price.
All Things How’s 2026 cost reference reports a sequence that starts at 50 Catalysts and rises in steps to 15,000 Catalysts. The complete set of intermediate amounts is not stated here, so the in-game confirmation screen remains the authoritative figure for your character.

Because each reset consumes currency, avoid using one merely to experiment with a single point. Group your changes into one deliberate rebuild, especially if your character is far enough along for the fee to be substantial.

Choose a target before spending the fee
A useful respec starts with the problem you want to solve, not with a list of attractive skill names. Write down what is failing in your current build, then assign points to the category that addresses that failure.

If you are dying before you can use your powers or cannot maintain the actions your build requires, first review the general stamina and defensive attributes available in your level-up screen. Keep only the Transmutation investment that supports your intended combat rhythm. The objective is a build that can survive long enough to benefit from its powers, rather than spending every refunded point on offense.
When melee damage or health is the problem
If close-range encounters are the issue, compare the melee-damage and health choices in the tree with the Transmutation entries you currently hold. A respec can move points away from a resource or status plan and toward direct combat or survivability, but the right balance depends on which attacks you actually use. Check each rank’s description at the Lantern before confirming.

When Nephtoglobin or Transmutation performance is the problem
For a power-centered build, concentrate on the documented Nephtoglobin and Transmutation categories. Transmutation Damage is the direct damage-oriented entry; Nephtoglobin Sufferance, Extraction, and Remnants are resource-related choices; Status Buildup and Healing Effectiveness support different utility goals. Combined Nephtoglobin/Transmutation upgrades can serve a hybrid allocation when you do not want to specialize in only one side.
When status effects are the objective
If your plan depends on applying statuses rather than relying solely on immediate damage, reserve points for Status Buildup and inspect the Transmutation description for any interaction that matches that plan. Do not assume that a damage upgrade and a buildup upgrade produce the same result; they are listed as separate categories.

The reset option is not visible
Return to a Lantern and enter the level-up or skill menu itself. The command may use a different label—Reset Level, Reset Skills, or Respec—so scan the complete menu rather than looking for one exact phrase. If you are already in the correct menu and still cannot find it, follow the labels and availability shown by your current game version; the documented instructions do not establish a universal location outside the Lantern progression interface.
The displayed fee is higher than a guide’s number
Use the amount shown in your confirmation prompt. The 2026 guides describe a rising fee tied to progression or repeated resets, and the published 50-to-15,000-Catalyst sequence is a reference rather than a guarantee that every character sees the same next step.
You cannot confirm with the button listed online
Controller and keyboard confirmation inputs were not consistently documented. Read the on-screen prompt for your platform and control scheme; remapping can also change which physical key or button performs confirmation.
A reset did not grant the Transmutation you wanted
That result is consistent with the documented separation between skill points and powers. The reset reallocates tree investment. Transmutations are acquired through progression from unique plague-infected humanoids, so an unowned power must be pursued through that progression rather than through repeated Lantern resets.
You have enough points but not enough Catalyst
Points and currency are separate requirements. A full refund does not remove the Catalyst charge. Delay the rebuild until you can pay the fee shown at the Lantern, and decide on the complete allocation before opening the confirmation screen again.
A pre-confirmation checklist
- Are you resting at a Lantern and viewing the level-up or skill menu?
- Have you identified the exact weakness you are correcting?
- Have you checked the current Catalyst amount rather than relying on an older figure?
- Do you know which attributes and Transmutation-related upgrades will receive the refunded points?
- Are you trying to improve an owned power, or are you mistakenly expecting the reset to unlock a new one?
- Have you read the confirmation control shown for your platform?
Once those checks are complete, confirm the reset, spend the returned points, and verify the final tree before leaving the Lantern.

The Lantern respec is a skill-tree rebuild paid for with Catalyst. It can redirect points into Transmutation Damage, Nephtoglobin-focused upgrades, Status Buildup, Healing Effectiveness, and related combinations, while the fee can rise as your progression or reset count increases. It is not documented as a way to change which progression-earned Transmutation powers you own; those powers come from unique plague-infected humanoids and are fueled by Nephtoglobin.
