How to Respec Stats in Valor Mortis at a Lantern

You can respec your spent skill and stat points at any Lantern. Rest at or reach a Lantern, open the skill or level-up menu, choose the reset or respec command, check the Catalyst price shown for your character, and confirm. The points are refunded for redistribution, so you do not need to restart your character.

The exact button name can vary by platform or interface version. The available guides agree on the Lantern location and Catalyst payment, but no publisher-issued control map or complete price table has been published in the references available for this guide. Treat the live price on the Lantern screen as authoritative.

What respec does in Valor Mortis

A respec reverses your spent skill or stat allocation and returns those points to the pool you can spend again. It is intended for changing a build after you have learned how a weapon, defensive technique or Transmutation fits your play style. You keep the same character and progress; the reset is not a new-game or character-restart process.

The procedure is tied to a Lantern rather than a menu available everywhere. The unofficial Valor Mortis Wiki skill-tree guide describes the action as resetting skills from the skill menu at a Lantern by paying Catalyst. A separate progression guide, published October 13, 2026, says skill points are refundable at any Lantern for Catalysts, with the price rising as you level.

That evidence establishes a refund of spent skill or stat allocation. It does not establish that every progression system is reversible. Do not assume a respec will undo weapon upgrade levels, Amber choices, gear changes or other permanent decisions unless the game explicitly lists them in the confirmation screen.

Step-by-step: reset your points at a Lantern

  1. Reach a Lantern. Find a Lantern in the world or return to one you have already unlocked. The reset command is reported as a Lantern function, not a field action available during ordinary exploration.
  2. Rest or interact with the Lantern. Use the normal interaction prompt. If several Lantern services appear, open the progression-related option rather than travel, inventory or equipment management.
  3. Open the skill, level-up or equivalent progression menu. The researched guides use slightly different wording for this menu, and the exact control label is not confirmed by an official manual. Look for the screen that normally lets you spend skill points.
  4. Choose the reset or respec command. The command may be shown as Reset, Respec, Refund or similar wording. Highlight it and wait for the confirmation panel; do not confirm from a general skill description without checking what is being refunded.
  5. Read the Catalyst charge. The confirmation screen should show the current price for this character. One current guide reports that the first price starts at 50 Catalysts, while other guidance says the price rises as you level or after each reset. The number displayed in your game is the figure to use.
  6. Confirm only after checking the refund total. Make sure the panel indicates that your spent skill or stat allocation will be returned. If the panel lists a different category, cancel and inspect the menu again rather than assuming it is a full build reset.
  7. Redistribute the refunded points. Spend them on the attributes and combat options that match your next route: health, Endurance, Nephtoglobin, melee damage, blocking, parrying or related skills. Leave a reserve if you are still testing a build and expect another purchase soon.

After confirmation, remain in the progression screen long enough to verify that the points are back and that the selected attributes show their new values. This quick check catches accidental cancellation or a reset of a narrower skill branch before you leave the Lantern.

How much does a respec cost?

The only concrete starting figure in the available guides is 50 Catalysts. AllThings. How reports that the cost starts at 50 Catalysts and rises with each reset. The progression guide instead describes a price that rises as you level. Because those descriptions do not provide a complete, publisher-confirmed schedule, you should not plan around a fixed price for later resets.

Reset situation What is established How to act
First or early reset One guide reports a starting cost of 50 Catalysts (AllThings.How). Open the Lantern screen and verify the displayed amount before confirming.
Later reset Guides report that the price rises with each reset or as your character levels (Valor Mortis Guide & Wiki). Assume a later reset can cost more; do not spend your entire balance immediately before experimenting.
Complete price table Not stated in a publisher-confirmed source. Use the live in-game Catalyst figure as authoritative.

The cost is paid in Catalysts, the progression currency used for character improvements such as health and stamina-related upgrades. Unused Catalysts can be left at your death site, so carrying a large balance through a dangerous route exposes the currency you intended to use for a respec. If a Lantern is nearby and you have already decided to change your build, spending before the risky section can protect that progress.

When should you respec?

Respec early while testing a concept

An early reset is the least expensive time to correct a build if the reported price curve is accurate. Use one after you have enough combat experience to identify a real problem, such as repeatedly running out of stamina while blocking or lacking Nephtoglobin for the Transmutations you actually use. A reset made solely because a different stat looks interesting can consume Catalysts you may need for core upgrades.

Respec before a major play-style change

A large shift from a blocking-oriented Saber setup to a parry-focused Rapier setup changes how you value Endurance, defensive skills and damage. Make the change at a Lantern before entering an area designed around the new approach, then test the first fights with the redistributed points. This is safer than discovering halfway through a route that your old allocation no longer supports your timing or stamina budget.

Do not reset for a single bad encounter

One difficult enemy or boss attempt does not prove that your entire allocation is wrong. First check whether a weapon upgrade, a different Transmutation, a blocking rhythm or a route change solves the problem. Because the cost can increase, reserve respecs for a pattern that persists across several encounters.

Plan around the next Lantern

If you are carrying enough Catalysts for a reset but are far from a Lantern, avoid spending the currency on unrelated upgrades just to reduce the balance. Conversely, do not take a high-risk detour with a large Catalyst reserve when a known Lantern is close. The objective is to arrive with both the currency and the ability to use it.

What comes back after the reset?

The supported outcome is a refund of spent skill or stat allocation. In practical terms, points invested through the skill or level-up progression screen become available for a new distribution. The guides do not specify whether a reset returns every point in one pool or preserves branch-specific restrictions, so inspect the confirmation panel and the post-reset totals.

  • Supported: spent skill or stat points can be refunded at a Lantern for Catalysts.
  • Not established: weapon upgrade levels, Amber selections, equipment improvements or every other progression category are refundable.
  • Not established: whether a reset refunds points spent in a category that is not visible in the ordinary skill menu.

If an item, weapon or permanent choice remains unchanged after the reset, that is consistent with the limited refund description. Do not sell equipment or dismantle upgrades expecting the respec to restore them; the available evidence does not promise that behavior.

How to rebuild your points after a respec

There is no publisher-confirmed ranking that makes one stat universally best. Use the following decision framework to match the allocation to the way you survive encounters. The fan progression guidance recommends Maximum Endurance early, then a defensive direction that matches Saber blocking or Rapier parrying, while still keeping base health, stamina and Nephtoglobin functional. Those are guide recommendations, not measured official rankings.

Priority What it supports Choose it when Trade-off to watch
Health and survivability More room for mistakes and longer survival when an attack gets through. You are dying before you can learn an encounter, or your route contains frequent unavoidable damage. More health does not replace stamina or defensive timing; an oversized health investment can leave actions underfunded.
Endurance or stamina Blocking, dodging and attacking without exhausting your action resource. Your guard breaks, your dodge chain stops early, or you cannot complete a damage sequence. Stamina helps only if you manage recovery and do not spend every point on attacks.
Nephtoglobin capacity More room to use Transmutations during a route or encounter. Your build depends on repeated Transmutation use and you regularly run out before a Lantern. Capacity has less value if you rarely use Transmutations or cannot sustain the other resources needed to capitalize on them.
Melee damage Shorter engagements when you can land attacks safely. You consistently avoid damage and your main problem is that fights last too long. Damage does not solve failed blocks, missed parries or an empty stamina bar.
Blocking specialization A defensive plan built around absorbing or managing attacks with a Saber-style approach. You prefer holding a stable guard and turning enemy pressure into safe openings. Blocking still consumes stamina and requires attention to attacks that should be dodged or answered differently.
Parrying specialization A timing-based defensive plan associated with Rapier-style play. You can read attack timing and want successful parries to create openings. Missed timing can be more punishing than a conservative block, so keep enough health and Endurance to survive practice.

A durable first rebuild

Start by putting enough points into Endurance to perform your normal block, dodge and attack sequence without immediate exhaustion. Add health if mistakes are currently ending attempts before you can adapt. Keep a functional Nephtoglobin reserve rather than reducing it to the minimum, especially if Transmutations are part of your normal answer to groups or elite enemies. This approach prioritizes action economy and survivability over a narrow damage peak.

A Saber and blocking rebuild

For a Saber-centered plan, make Endurance the foundation for repeated guarding and counterattacks, then add the blocking-related options that your skill menu offers. Retain enough health to survive a missed guard and enough damage to finish openings. Test the build against ordinary enemies first; if your guard remains stable but fights drag on, move the next point toward damage rather than resetting again immediately.

A Rapier and parrying rebuild

For a Rapier-centered plan, prioritize the defensive and offensive choices that reward successful parries. Endurance remains important because failed attempts, recovery and follow-up attacks all consume action capacity. Keep a health buffer while learning timing. Once parries are consistent, additional damage can reduce the number of cycles required to defeat an enemy.

A Transmutation-focused rebuild

If your route and combat plan revolve around Transmutations, raise Nephtoglobin capacity enough to use the abilities at the moments that matter rather than spending every point on a single burst. Pair that capacity with the Endurance or health needed to survive while setting up and recovering. A large resource pool is wasted if you cannot create safe opportunities to use it.

A balanced rebuild

When you are still learning the game, divide the refunded points among health, Endurance and Nephtoglobin before specializing. This gives you a stable baseline for comparing weapons and defensive techniques. After several routes, identify the resource that actually limits you and move future points toward that bottleneck. A balanced allocation is a testing platform, not a claim that every stat should remain equal.

Managing Catalysts before and after a respec

Keep the reset price separate from upgrade money

Write down or remember the Catalyst amount shown at the Lantern before you spend. Because later prices may rise, treat the respec charge as a planned expense rather than whatever remains after upgrading health or stamina. If you cannot afford the displayed price, leave the menu without confirming and collect Catalysts through normal progression before returning.

Reduce death-site exposure

Unused Catalysts can drop at the death site. Before a route with a high chance of death, consider spending the amount you have deliberately set aside for upgrades or the next reset. This is a risk-management choice: spending protects the currency but may leave fewer points available for an immediate purchase if you reach the next Lantern safely.

Do not assume a reset refunds its fee

The available descriptions say the reset costs Catalysts; they do not say that the fee is returned, discounted or waived after a failed experiment. Confirm only when you are ready to accept the current charge.

Troubleshooting a missing or unexpected respec option

The reset command is not visible

  • Confirm that you are interacting with a Lantern rather than opening a general equipment or inventory screen.
  • Enter the skill or level-up menu where points are normally spent; the reset is reported there.
  • Check every tab or submenu in that progression screen. The exact label is not confirmed, so it may not literally say “Respec.”
  • Make sure you have spent points to refund. A character with no allocation to return may not show a useful reset action.

The price is higher than expected

Use the number on the current confirmation panel. The available guides report an increasing price, either with each reset or as the character levels, so an earlier 50-Catalyst figure is not a promise for every later attempt. Cancel if the amount is beyond your budget and plan the next reset before spending Catalysts elsewhere.

The points do not appear to be refunded

Remain in the progression menu and compare the available point total with the pre-reset allocation. Verify that you confirmed the reset rather than backing out of the prompt, then check whether the command targeted a single branch instead of all spent skill allocation. If the game shows a different result, rely on the in-game description and avoid repeating the charge until you understand its scope.

A weapon or other upgrade did not change

That result is not evidence of a failed reset. The available guidance only supports refunding skill or stat allocation; it does not promise refunds for weapon levels, Amber choices or other progression categories. Recheck the confirmation text before treating any unchanged item as an error.

What the available guides establish—and what they do not

The strongest common point is the location: use the skill-related menu at a Lantern and pay Catalysts. The independent, unofficial fan wiki states that skills can be reset there, and the progression guide repeats that skill points are refundable at any Lantern. AllThings. How supplies the 50-Catalyst starting figure and the warning that the price rises with each reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those sources are useful procedural references, not publisher manuals. No official control map, complete cost schedule or authoritative statement covering every progression category is established here. Interface text can therefore differ by platform, language or future update. When a guide and your Lantern screen disagree, follow the current in-game confirmation panel and read exactly which points it will return.

Respec checklist

  • Reach a Lantern and open the progression menu.
  • Locate the reset or respec command in the skill or level-up screen.
  • Read the current Catalyst fee; the reported starting figure is 50, but later prices may rise.
  • Confirm that the panel refers to spent skill or stat allocation.
  • Confirm the reset, then verify the refunded point total.
  • Rebuild around your real bottleneck: health, Endurance, Nephtoglobin, damage, blocking or parrying.
  • Spend remaining Catalysts with the death-site risk in mind.
