To prevent ESLint from arguing over Prettier’s output, add eslint-config-prettier to disable overlapping ESLint rules, then run Prettier and ESLint as separate project commands. This keeps each tool focused and makes failures easier to understand.
Give Prettier and ESLint separate jobs
Prettier decides how code is formatted; ESLint reports code-quality issues. Prettier’s guidance is to “Use Prettier for code formatting concerns, and linters for code-quality concerns.” See Prettier’s guidance on integrating with linters.

When both tools enforce stylistic rules, the same file can pass one tool and fail the other—or be reformatted repeatedly. Rather than trying to tune both tools until they produce identical output, remove the overlapping ESLint rules and make Prettier the formatting authority.
Set up a reliable workflow

Install project-local tools
Use the project’s local Prettier installation so contributors and editor integrations can use the same version. Prettier recommends pinning an exact version because even patch releases can change formatting. Follow the current Prettier installation guidance for the package manager and setup your project uses.

Disable conflicting ESLint rules
Add
eslint-config-prettierto the project’s ESLint configuration. It turns off ESLint rules that Prettier makes unnecessary or that may conflict with its formatting. The exact configuration syntax depends on your ESLint configuration style and installed package versions; use the package’s current guidance for your setup. Run formatting and linting separately
Use
prettier --writewhen you want to apply formatting. Useprettier --checkto check whether files match Prettier’s output without changing them; it exits with code 1 when formatting changes are needed. Check the configuration that applies to each file
Prettier searches upward from a file’s directory for a configuration file and does not support a global configuration. If formatting differs between directories, confirm that each file resolves to the intended project configuration. See Prettier’s configuration documentation.

Choose whether to run Prettier through ESLint
For most projects, invoke Prettier directly and keep it separate from ESLint. The alternative, eslint-plugin-prettier, runs Prettier as an ESLint rule and reports formatting differences as lint issues.

Diagnose conflicts that persist
- Different results between editor and terminal: check that both use the project’s local Prettier version, rather than an unrelated editor installation.
- Files format differently in separate directories: inspect the configuration found by Prettier’s upward search from each file.
- ESLint still flags formatting: verify that
eslint-config-prettieris included in the applicable ESLint configuration and that the formatting rule is disabled. - Unclear which tool is failing: run
prettier --write, thenprettier --checkand the project’s ESLint command separately. This distinguishes formatting changes from lint diagnostics.
