Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Most on-premises Active Directory (AD DS) and Azure AD integration conflicts are caused by duplicate attributes, incorrect object matching, synchronization-rule precedence, or security protections—not by two administrators editing the same record at once. The safe fix is to identify the exact error, prove which AD and Microsoft Entra ID objects represent the same identity, correct the attribute in its authoritative directory, and then verify that synchronization updated the intended cloud object.
Azure AD is now called Microsoft Entra ID, and Azure AD Connect is generally called Microsoft Entra Connect. The procedures below apply to hybrid deployments using Microsoft Entra Connect; Cloud Sync has different architecture and supported features, but it still requires unique identity data and correct object ownership.

What an “integration conflict” actually means
“Conflict” is not one Microsoft Entra error. It can describe several different failures:
- A duplicate
userPrincipalName,mail, orproxyAddressesvalue. - An
InvalidSoftMatchorInvalidHardMatchduring object association. - A user, group, or contact competing for the same SMTP address.
- An attribute-flow rule sending an unexpected value.
- An object being filtered, deleted, or provisioned twice.
- A cloud account unexpectedly becoming synchronized or having its attributes overwritten.
Microsoft Entra Connect normally tries a hard match using the configured source anchor. If that fails, it can try a soft match using the incoming user’s UPN or primary SMTP address. A matching email address is evidence for investigation, not proof that two objects are the same person.

Microsoft documents the matching process and existing-tenant scenarios at How Microsoft Entra Connect matches users and lists common synchronization errors at Microsoft Entra Connect sync errors.
Before changing an object: establish authority and ownership
Do not delete accounts, disable directory synchronization, or copy an immutable identifier until you know which object must survive. First determine whether the cloud object is cloud-managed, currently synchronized, previously synchronized but now outside scope, soft-deleted, or linked to another forest or tenant.
Record the identity and dependencies
- Entra object ID,
onPremisesSyncEnabled,onPremisesImmutableId, andonPremisesObjectIdentifier. - AD distinguished name, UPN, objectGUID,
mS-DS-ConsistencyGuid, and on-premises SID. - Primary SMTP address and every proxy address.
- Mailbox status, licenses, group memberships, MFA methods, application assignments, audit requirements, and role assignments.
- Last synchronization time, current provisioning errors, and the identity of the active synchronization server.
For synchronized objects, many attributes are controlled by AD DS. A cloud-side edit can be rejected or overwritten by the next synchronization. See Microsoft’s explanation at Troubleshoot Microsoft Entra Connect objects and attributes.

Check for privileged-account protection
As of July 1, 2026, Microsoft Entra ID applies additional hard-match protections. A hard match can be blocked when the target has onPremisesObjectIdentifier, has a privileged Entra role, or is eligible for one. Treat InvalidHardMatch involving such an account as a security incident, not a routine alias problem.
Choose a remediation path from the exact symptom
| Error or symptom | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
InvalidSoftMatch |
UPN or SMTP matches, but source anchors differ or the address belongs to another object. | Find every object holding the value; remove it from the wrong owner after proving identity. |
AttributeValueMustBeUnique |
Duplicate UPN, mail, or proxy address. | Keep the value only on the intended object in its authoritative directory. |
ObjectTypeMismatch |
A user, group, or contact competes for a matching address. | Correct the object type or address ownership. |
InvalidHardMatch |
Wrong source anchor, takeover protection, or privileged-account safeguard. | Validate ownership and follow Microsoft’s documented recovery path; do not force a match. |
| New duplicate cloud user | Neither a valid hard nor soft match succeeded. | Stop further changes and decide whether the object is genuinely new. |
| Attribute repeatedly reverts | AD is authoritative, or a higher-precedence rule wins. | Change the AD value or the supported synchronization rule. |
| Object missing | OU/domain filtering, deletion, connector, or export failure. | Inspect scope, imports, connector space, synchronization, and exports. |
| SID conflict | Duplicate or reused on-premises security identifier. | Investigate AD and RID history; do not edit a random cloud attribute. |
Microsoft identifies UPN, proxy addresses, object ID, immutable ID, and onPremisesSecurityIdentifier among values that must not collide.

Fix duplicate UPN and proxy-address values
Correct duplicates in the directory that owns the value. If two AD objects contain the address, edit AD DS. If a cloud-only object owns it, resolve that cloud object using Microsoft’s documented process.
- Copy the exact conflicting value from the synchronization error.
- Search all relevant AD users, groups, and contacts.
- Search Entra ID for the same UPN, mail address, and proxy address, including deleted users.
- Confirm which object should own the value using more than display name or email.
- Remove the value from the wrong source object, using normal change control.
- Allow import, synchronization, and export to complete.
- Confirm that the intended object received the address and no duplicate was created.
In AD, the uppercase SMTP: entry in proxyAddresses identifies the primary SMTP address; lowercase entries are aliases.

Run IdFix before synchronization or during cleanup to find duplicate addresses, invalid formats, characters, and UPN problems. IdFix is a data-quality aid, not a source-anchor repair tool. Microsoft lists it in the prerequisite guidance at Microsoft Entra Connect prerequisites.
Repair a hard-match or source-anchor mismatch
A source anchor is the stable value that associates an on-premises object with its cloud object. Many deployments use mS-DS-ConsistencyGuid; older or specially configured deployments may use objectGUID or another configured attribute. The configured policy must be consistent, and changing it during a rebuild or forest migration can break existing associations. See source-anchor troubleshooting.

Use a source-anchor correction only when the AD and cloud objects are unquestionably the same identity, the cloud object must be retained, the anchor is wrong or missing on-premises, and no other object is correctly linked to that cloud account. Never copy an immutable ID because names or email addresses look similar.
- Export or record the current AD and cloud identifiers.
- Verify the person or group with independent evidence, such as employment records, mailbox ownership, application assignments, and audit history.
- Compare AD
mS-DS-ConsistencyGuidandobjectGUIDwith EntraonPremisesImmutableIdandonPremisesObjectIdentifier. Do not manually Base64-convert values unless you understand the connector’s binary representation and byte ordering. - Check privileged roles, eligibility, mailbox state, licenses, aliases, and compliance dependencies.
- Obtain approval and make the smallest possible change in AD DS.
- Synchronize and verify that the existing cloud object—not a new duplicate—was updated.
Microsoft describes this reassociation pattern in existing-tenant matching guidance.
Handle hard-match security blocks safely
For InvalidHardMatch, confirm the intended cloud account, intended AD object, onPremisesObjectIdentifier state, and all privileged role assignments or eligibility. Do not casually remove administrator access or enable a bypass simply to make synchronization succeed. Follow Microsoft’s recovery procedure, rerun synchronization, verify the association, and restore any temporarily changed security control only after validation. A successful hard match to the wrong account can transfer source authority to the wrong identity.
Investigate attribute-flow and synchronization-rule conflicts
If a value changes to an unexpected result without a duplicate error, inspect the synchronization rules. Microsoft Entra Connect resolves competing flows by precedence: a lower numeric precedence number has higher priority. Review the rule that contributes the attribute, whether the flow is direct, an expression, or a constant, whether inbound rules are disabled, and whether outbound filtering excludes the object. Documentation is at the default synchronization configuration.
- Do not edit Microsoft’s default rules directly.
- Prefer a narrowly scoped custom rule.
- Record its scope and precedence number.
- Test with one object or a pilot OU.
- Use a staging server for major rule changes and export the configuration first.
- Use connector-space and metaverse previews to see which rule wins before exporting.
Run synchronization and verify the result
After correcting source data, a delta cycle is normally sufficient:

Start-ADSyncSyncCycle -PolicyType Delta
For major configuration or scope changes, use the synchronization engine’s documented full policy rather than repeatedly launching full cycles. Check:
- Import, synchronization, and export operations completed without errors.
- The intended cloud object has the expected
onPremisesSyncEnabledstate. - UPN, primary SMTP address, aliases, licenses, groups, mailbox association, sign-in, and application access remain correct.
- No duplicate cloud user was provisioned.
- The error clears after the next Connect Health reporting interval. Microsoft says sync error reports update approximately every 30 minutes, although connector processing and export timing vary.
Review the Entra admin center, Connect Health, and Synchronization Service Manager (connectors, operations, imports, synchronization, exports, connector space, and metaverse previews). Check AD replication, DNS, firewall, proxy, service-account status, filtering, and whether another server is active or in staging mode. Only one active synchronization server should export to the tenant. A staging server is for redundancy and must not export simultaneously. Application-based authentication also has multiple-server restrictions; see Microsoft’s authentication considerations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Special cases that need extra caution
Deleted and recreated users
A recreated AD user normally has a new objectGUID and may have a new source anchor. If the cloud account represents the original person, treat the incident as identity reassociation, not an alias fix. Check soft-deleted cloud users before provisioning a replacement.
Multi-forest moves
Moving a user from Forest A to Forest B can change the anchor when the deployment uses objectGUID. Plan the authoritative forest and anchor strategy before the move.
Duplicate mail-enabled objects
A group or contact can own the same SMTP address as a user. Correct the object type or address owner rather than changing an unrelated user attribute.

SID conflicts
An onPremisesSecurityIdentifier conflict can reflect unusual AD or RID-pool history, including domain-controller recovery. Investigate the security identifier history.
Cloud-only administrators
Some privileged accounts are intentionally cloud-only. Use separate administrative identities and do not force such an account into synchronization as an ordinary user.
Duplicate-attribute resiliency
Microsoft Entra duplicate-attribute resiliency can quarantine conflicting values and reduce some provisioning failures, but it does not repair duplicate source data. The AD conflict still requires correction. See duplicate-attribute resiliency.

When to use Connect Health, IdFix, Cloud Sync, or support
- IdFix: Pre-synchronization data-quality checks.
- Connect Health and Synchronization Service Manager: Error, connector, rule, scope, and export diagnostics.
- Microsoft Entra Connect: The existing synchronization engine and its configured matching rules.
- Cloud Sync: A possible architecture alternative when its supported topology, writeback requirements, agents, and feature set fit the organization. Switching products does not fix bad identity data; compare current capabilities before migrating. Microsoft’s existing-tenant guidance covers both approaches at this documentation page.
- Microsoft Support or an identity specialist: High-risk reassociation, privileged accounts, multiple forests or tenants, mailbox or compliance dependencies, or an already-disrupted tenant-wide synchronization state.
Do not disable tenant-wide directory synchronization as a first-line fix. Microsoft warns that it initiates a broader source-of-authority transition and can disrupt many synchronized objects: Troubleshoot Microsoft Entra Connect objects and attributes.
Quick Recap
Prevent future conflicts
- Enforce unique UPNs and proxy addresses across users, groups, and contacts.
- Adopt a stable, documented source-anchor policy before forest or server migrations.
- Use joiner, mover, and leaver procedures that prevent premature address reuse.
- Keep separate administrative identities and review privileged-role eligibility.
- Test synchronization rules and scope changes on a pilot object or staging server.
- Review Connect Health errors regularly and retain exportable configuration and identity records.
- Require change approval for source-anchor changes, object reassociation, and tenant-wide synchronization changes.
