Amazon cut the second-generation Apple Watch SE (40mm, GPS-only) from $249 to $149 for Cyber Monday 2024, a $100 reduction or roughly 40% off. Engadget reported the offer on December 2, 2024, and described it as the lowest price it had seen for that configuration at the time. The $149 promotion has expired; it should not be confused with Apple’s current Apple Watch SE 3.

Engadget’s report supports the $149 price and its “lowest price we’ve seen” wording. That means lowest observed by the publication at that time, not a verified lowest price ever across all retailers.
What the second-generation SE offered
At $149, the SE 2 was one of the least expensive ways for an iPhone owner to enter Apple’s smartwatch ecosystem. Engadget’s coverage noted that it used the same processor family as the Apple Watch Ultra and Series 8, while retaining the everyday functions most first-time buyers want.

These are device features, not guarantees of medical diagnosis or emergency response. The second-generation model is iPhone-only; Android phones are not supported. Check the model-specific requirements in Apple’s technical specifications before buying old stock, because current SE 3 requirements should not be applied retroactively.
What buyers gave up
The SE 2 was a lower-cost model rather than a full-featured Series replacement.

- No always-on display: the screen turns off when your wrist is down.
- No blood-oxygen monitoring or temperature sensor: it lacks several sensors found on higher-end models.
- No Double Tap gesture: that newer interaction method is not available.
- Less-durable display glass: it uses Ion-X glass rather than the sapphire crystal used on some premium Apple Watch models.
- GPS-only connection: calls, messages and streaming away from your iPhone are not independent cellular functions.
Was $149 a good price?
For the specific 40mm GPS version, yes. A $100 reduction from the $249 reference price made it a strong budget purchase for an iPhone owner who mainly wanted notifications, exercise tracking, heart-rate monitoring and safety features. The low price also reflected the smaller case, GPS-only connectivity and SE feature set.

It was also less attractive if an older watch’s battery condition or remaining software support was uncertain.

Should you consider an SE 2 now?
Only evaluate a remaining listing as old stock or refurbished hardware, not as the live Cyber Monday offer. Before paying, check:
- Whether the listing says new, refurbished or used.
- Whether it is the 40mm GPS model rather than a different case or cellular configuration.
- That the charging puck and band are included.
- Whether Amazon itself or a third-party marketplace seller is responsible for fulfillment.
- The warranty, return period and seller ratings.
- The battery-health information, especially if the watch has been stored for years.
- Your iPhone’s compatibility with the second-generation model.
- Whether the price is low enough to justify older hardware instead of a current SE 3.
Search pages can preserve the old headline, a sold-out listing can redirect to another product, and a retailer page may now show the SE 3. Confirm the model number and configuration at checkout.

What the current Apple Watch SE 3 costs
Apple’s current SE line is the Apple Watch SE 3, not the SE 2 from the 2024 promotion. Apple lists these starting prices on its official store pages:

Apple’s current SE 3 information describes an always-on Retina display, S10 chip, sleep tracking, crash and fall detection, 5G-capable cellular options and up to 18 hours of battery life under Apple’s stated conditions. The listed compatibility baseline is an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. Those are SE 3 specifications and must not be treated as features or requirements of the discounted SE 2.

How GPS differs from GPS + Cellular
A GPS-only Apple Watch relies on a paired iPhone or a known Wi-Fi connection for connected services. GPS + Cellular models can place calls and send messages away from the iPhone when activated with an eligible carrier plan, which adds both purchase and recurring service costs. Case size and connectivity are separate choices: a 40mm watch can be GPS or GPS + Cellular.
