Fastest fix: open Start > Settings > System > Display, select the monitor that looks wrong, then under Scale & layout choose the percentage marked Recommended. If a custom value is active, open Scale settings, remove the custom value or disable custom scaling, and sign out when Windows asks.
Use Text size instead when only letters are too small. Use Magnifier when you need an immediate, temporary zoom. Do not use a lower display resolution as a substitute for scaling: resolution and scale change different things, and a non-native resolution can make text blurry, centered with black borders, or stretched.

Choose the Windows 11 control that matches the problem
Windows 11 has several size controls that look similar but affect different parts of the screen. Picking the wrong one can make the interface harder to use or reduce image sharpness.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Control | What it changes | When to use it | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display Scale | Windows interface elements, supported app controls, icons and images | The whole interface on one monitor is too large or too small | Saved until you change it again; Windows may request a sign-out |
| Text size | Text without intentionally resizing every other interface element | Letters are difficult to read but buttons and windows are already a comfortable size | Saved in Accessibility settings |
| Magnifier | A temporary zoom of part or all of the screen | You need to read something immediately or recover an oversized interface | Temporary; close it to return to the normal view |
| Display resolution | The number of pixels used to render the display | The picture is incorrectly sized, stretched or not using the panel’s native mode | Saved until changed; it is separate from scaling |
Display Scale is the normal fix for a global size problem. Text size is the focused fix for readability. Magnifier is the emergency and short-term option. Resolution should be corrected when the image itself is soft, stretched, surrounded by black, or unexpectedly small.

Change display scaling in Windows 11
These steps change the scale for the selected display. With more than one monitor, selecting the correct screen is essential; otherwise you may fix a different monitor than the one that appears wrong.
- Open Start, choose Settings, and open System > Display.
- At the top of the Display page, select the monitor in the display arrangement area that needs correction. Windows highlights the selected display.
- Scroll to Scale & layout.
- Open the Scale menu and choose the percentage marked Recommended. Microsoft’s guidance is: “Select Scale, then select an option. Typically, it’s best to choose the one that’s marked (Recommended).”
- Read the previewed result. If Windows asks you to sign out, save open work and sign out so the new scale can be applied consistently.
The recommended value is tied to the selected display and its current configuration. It is the safest starting point because it is the value Windows identifies as appropriate for that screen. You can test another listed percentage if the recommended option does not meet a specific accessibility need, but return to Recommended when an application becomes clipped, controls overlap, or text rendering becomes inconsistent.
When the wrong monitor was changed
Return to Settings > System > Display and click the intended monitor in the arrangement diagram before opening Scale. Each display can have its own scale. A laptop panel and an external monitor often need different percentages because their physical sizes and pixel densities differ.

Reset a custom scale
Open Scale settings from the Display page. Remove the custom value or turn off custom scaling, then choose a standard percentage from the regular Scale menu. Microsoft allows custom input from 100% to 500%, but states that custom scaling is not recommended for routine use. Very large custom values can make windows extend beyond the screen and can leave some applications with unusable controls.
If Windows displays a sign-out request after changing or disabling a custom value, sign out rather than postponing it. A sign-out gives the desktop and applications a clean opportunity to load the new metrics. Save documents first because signing out closes the current session.

Make only text larger
When buttons, menus and windows are already the right size, do not raise the global display scale just to enlarge lettering. Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Text size, move the Text size slider, preview the sample text, and select Apply when the size is comfortable.
Microsoft documents text scaling from 100% (the default) to 225% through the Make text bigger slider. This setting targets text rather than deliberately enlarging every icon and window. Results can vary between applications because Windows applications use different interface frameworks. Some apps may reflow text or controls when the font becomes larger; a narrow dialog can therefore require scrolling or a wider window.

Use Magnifier when you need an immediate recovery
Magnifier is useful when the Settings interface is too small to read or a scale change has made the desktop difficult to navigate. It does not permanently change Display Scale or resolution.
- Press Windows key + Plus (+) to open Magnifier or increase its zoom.
- Press Windows key + Minus (-) to reduce the zoom.
- Press Windows key + Esc to close Magnifier and return to the normal view.
Use Magnifier to read the Display page, select the correct monitor, and restore the Recommended scale. Close it afterward if you only needed temporary enlargement. Because Magnifier is temporary, it is not a substitute for choosing a persistent Text size or Display Scale value.

Fix blurry, stretched or oddly sized output
A scale change and a resolution change are separate operations. Scale changes the apparent size of interface elements; resolution changes the pixel mode used by the display. Confusing the two is a common reason a screen remains blurry after the scale looks correct.
Restore the recommended resolution
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Select the monitor with the image-quality problem.
- Under Scale & layout, open Display resolution.
- Choose the resolution Windows marks Recommended, then confirm the change if Windows asks.
Microsoft warns that a lower-than-native resolution can make text less sharp. Depending on the display, the picture may appear small and centered, have black edges, or be stretched. If the scale is comfortable but the image has one of these symptoms, correct resolution rather than increasing scale.
Check Windows Update when resolution changes unexpectedly
If Windows keeps selecting an unexpected resolution, open Start > Settings > Windows Update and choose Check for updates. Microsoft recommends this path because a graphics driver may need an update. After updates complete, return to Display and verify both the resolution and scale for the affected monitor.
Try the blurry-app option only when appropriate
A Microsoft Q&A answer dated 2023-10-09 describes an Advanced scaling option named Let Windows try to fix apps so they’re not blurry. Treat this as community guidance rather than a guaranteed label on every current Windows 11 build: open the Display page, look for Advanced scaling, and use the option only if it is present and matches the wording shown on your system. If the option is absent, continue with the Recommended scale, Recommended resolution and Windows Update checks instead.
Application frameworks differ, so a single app can remain soft while the desktop is sharp. Close and reopen that app after changing scale or text size. If only that program is affected, use its own display or font controls before changing the entire monitor.

Recover when the interface is too large to operate
Use the keyboard recovery path when oversized controls prevent reliable mouse navigation.
- Press Windows key + Esc if Magnifier is active and you want to return to the normal view, or press Windows key + Minus (-) several times to make the screen usable temporarily.
- Press the Windows key, type Settings, and press Enter.
- Use Tab, the arrow keys and Enter to reach System > Display. Keyboard focus moves through the navigation pane and page controls.
- Select the affected display in the arrangement area, move to Scale, and choose the value marked Recommended.
- If a custom value is shown, open Scale settings, remove it or disable custom scaling, and sign out if requested.
Save work before signing out. If the problem is only that text is hard to read, use Magnifier to complete the normal Settings path instead of making a large permanent scale change.
How to choose a scale percentage
Start with the Recommended percentage for each display. Then adjust only when you have a specific reason, such as reading distance or a persistent accessibility requirement.
- Use Recommended first: it is Windows’ display-specific baseline and the easiest value to troubleshoot.
- Raise Display Scale: choose this when the entire interface, including controls and icons, is too small even at a comfortable viewing distance.
- Lower Display Scale: choose this when windows and controls do not fit comfortably, provided text remains readable.
- Use Text size instead: choose this when text is the problem but the size of other controls is already right.
- Avoid routine custom scaling: Microsoft supports 100%–500% custom input but does not recommend it for ordinary use.
Scale percentages are relative settings, not measurements of physical monitor size. The same percentage can look different on two displays because panel dimensions, resolution and pixel density differ. Judge the result on the selected monitor, then configure the other monitor independently.
Multiple-monitor setup checklist
Mixed-monitor systems are more reliable when each display is configured deliberately rather than applying one value by guesswork.

- Open Settings > System > Display and identify each screen in the arrangement diagram.
- Select one monitor and record which scale and resolution Windows marks Recommended.
- Set that monitor’s Scale to its Recommended value, then verify its resolution.
- Select the next monitor and repeat the checks. Do not assume the first monitor’s percentage is correct for the second.
- Move a window between displays and inspect its text and controls. If only one display looks wrong, return to that display’s settings rather than changing all screens.
The display-selection step matters especially for an external monitor. Always select the external screen before changing its Scale or resolution; otherwise you may alter the laptop panel instead.
Common symptoms and the correct fix
| Symptom | Likely control | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Everything is too large or too small on one monitor | Display Scale | Select that monitor and choose the Recommended scale under Scale & layout. |
| Only letters are too small | Text size | Open Accessibility > Text size and adjust the Make text bigger slider. |
| You cannot comfortably reach Settings after a change | Magnifier | Use Windows + Plus or Windows + Minus to navigate, then restore Recommended scale. |
| Text is soft after changing size | Resolution or app rendering | Keep Scale separate, restore Recommended resolution, check Windows Update, and reopen the affected app. |
| The image is stretched, centered or bordered by black | Display resolution | Choose the resolution marked Recommended for that monitor. |
| A custom 500% or other unusual value is active | Custom scaling | Open Scale settings, remove the custom value or disable custom scaling, then sign out if prompted. |
| One external display is wrong while another is fine | Display target | Select the external monitor in the arrangement diagram before changing its settings. |
Keep the three settings distinct
Scale changes the apparent size of Windows and supported application elements. Text size changes relative font size across Windows and individual applications without intentionally resizing every other element. Resolution changes the pixel mode and therefore affects sharpness, borders and stretching. Magnifier is a temporary zoom layer.
When troubleshooting, change one control at a time. First restore the selected display’s Recommended scale. If the picture is still soft or geometrically wrong, restore Recommended resolution. If only text remains difficult to read, adjust Text size. Use Magnifier whenever you need a temporary view while making those changes.

What to expect after applying a change
A scale or custom-scaling change can require signing out before every application uses the new metrics. Keep unsaved documents closed or saved before accepting that prompt. After returning to the desktop, check the taskbar, Settings, a browser window and any application that previously looked wrong. Text may reflow at larger sizes, and individual applications can render differently from the Windows shell.
If the change solved the size problem but introduced blur, do not keep increasing or decreasing Scale at random. Verify the monitor selection, restore the Recommended resolution, check for Windows updates, and then evaluate the individual application. This sequence separates a display-mode problem from a scaling problem and avoids compounding both.
