Before you reset: identify the model and the operation
Check the model number on the earbuds, charging case, packaging, or the device information in Sony’s app. Sony’s button locations, case position, hold times, and indicator signals vary by model, so do not use WF-1000XM5 instructions for another pair. Find the exact model’s current instructions on Sony Support before following a button sequence.

Sony distinguishes a reset from an initialization for the WF-1000XM5. A reset retains pairing information and other settings. Initialization restores factory defaults and erases Bluetooth pairings. Sony warns: “IMPORTANT: The initialize operation resets all the device settings to the factory defaults and deletes all pairing information.” After initialization, pair the earbuds with your devices again.

Try the checks that match the problem first
A reset cannot clear debris from a charging connection or repair a hardware fault. Start with the symptom-specific checks below, following Sony’s guidance for your exact model.

If the earbuds will not turn on or charge
- Check the earbuds’ and case’s charge and indicator state, and confirm that the earbuds are seated correctly in the case.
- For wireless charging on the WF-1000XM5, check that the case is positioned correctly on the charging pad and that the charging setup is working.
- If Sony’s temperature warning appears, retry charging in an ambient temperature of 15–30 °C (59–86 °F), the range Sony gives for the WF-1000XM5 when abnormal temperature is indicated.
- Clean the case charging port with a soft, dry cloth. For headphones or charging-port cleaning, Sony also recommends a cloth or cotton swab. Do not use compressed air: it can push dust into microphone or sound-outlet openings.

If the earbuds will not connect or pair
- Check the charge and indicator state first.
- Restart the phone, computer, or other playback device.
- Remove the earbuds’ saved Bluetooth entry from that device, then pair the earbuds again using the model’s instructions.
- If the problem persists, try the model-specific reset before considering initialization.

If Sony’s app is the problem
Update the app, then restart the mobile device and headphones. If the app still does not work correctly, follow Sony’s model-specific reset or initialization instructions as needed. Do not assume an app issue means the earbuds need a factory reset.

Reset
Choose reset when you want to follow Sony’s reset procedure while retaining stored pairings and settings. Check Sony’s WF-1000XM5 instructions for the precise controls and completion signal. Do not substitute another model’s button location, case position, or hold time.
Initialization
Initialization is the factory-default operation, not simply a deeper reset: it deletes pairing information. Sony says the WF-1000XM5 case indicator flashes green four times when initialization completes. If that confirmation does not occur, Sony says initialization has not completed and instructs you to try again. The case must have sufficient remaining battery; insufficient charge can prevent the operation. Confirm the indicator behavior against Sony’s current instructions before treating initialization as successful.

When to contact Sony support
If the problem remains after the relevant charging, connection, app, reset, or initialization steps, contact Sony support for the exact model. A persistent charging failure, missing indicator, or connection problem may require service; resetting is not a guaranteed fix for a faulty port, power source, battery, or other hardware issue.
