To use BMAD on a hosted server, choose a Bluehost Virtual Dedicated Server plan that is eligible for the BMAD application, select BMAD during checkout, then connect over SSH, configure your Anthropic API key, and initialize a project. The documented Bluehost image is a command-line development environment, not a web app. If you already have a server or local development environment, BMAD’s general CLI installation is a separate route.
Choose between a preconfigured server and a CLI install

These routes are not interchangeable server images: the Bluehost guide documents its own provisioning flow, while the BMAD repository describes installing the framework with its CLI. The available sources do not establish that other hosting providers offer the same image or setup process.

Provision the Bluehost BMAD server
- Open Bluehost’s Virtual Dedicated Server purchase flow and review the Standard and High Performance plans, available locations, hardware configuration, and current billing terms.
- In the Software/Application selection, choose BMAD and confirm the selection. Bluehost says the operating system is chosen for the selected application and that only one application can be selected per purchase.
- Complete checkout after checking the order total and plan eligibility. Bluehost notes that BMAD may not appear as an option if the selected plan does not meet its minimum requirements; its setup instructions do not specify BMAD-specific hardware minimums.
Prices and offers can change. Check the live order flow for current charges and the account Renewal Center for renewal pricing; do not assume an advertised initial price will be the renewal rate.

- After provisioning, find the server in the Bluehost Portal and reset its root password.
- From a terminal, connect using the server address:
ssh root@your_server_ip. Replaceyour_server_ipwith the address shown for your server.
The provider’s documented image is accessed through SSH and does not include a web GUI. Its supporting README describes SSH-only access, no HTTP or HTTPS services, and UFW configured with port 22 open. Those details describe this Bluehost image, not every BMAD installation.

Set the Anthropic API key and initialize a project
- On the server, run
bash /opt/bmad/setup-env.shand follow the prompts to setANTHROPIC_API_KEY. The alternative documented method is to edit/etc/bmad/.env. - Initialize a project with
bmad-init project-name [quick|standard|enterprise]. Replaceproject-namewith your project’s name and choose one of the listed tracks. - Find the resulting project files under
/srv/bmad-projects/, as described by the provider guide.
The API key is not baked into the image. The supporting README says /etc/bmad/.env is root-only; keep the key secret and avoid placing it in shared project files or shell history.
What comes with the documented image
Bluehost’s guide describes Claude Code and the Quick, Standard, and Enterprise tracks as preconfigured. Its sample login output shows Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS, Node.js v24.17.0, and bmad-method 6.9.0. These are sample values in a guide updated August 27, 2026—not a guarantee of the software versions on a server provisioned later.

Bluehost characterizes the image as a developer playground rather than a production service. Its access and firewall details should therefore not be read as a production security design or as advice for exposing a service publicly.
Install BMAD in an existing project instead
If you do not need the provider-preconfigured server, the BMAD-METHOD repository README gives this general project installation command:

npx bmad-method install
The README lists Node.js v20 or higher as a prerequisite and also documents npx bmad-method list and npx bmad-method status. Because repository instructions can change, check the current README before installing or relying on version-specific commands: BMAD-METHOD repository.
