First identify your Mac’s processor: the PRAM/NVRAM startup shortcut and an SMC reset are Intel-only procedures. On an Apple silicon Mac, don’t reset the SMC—Apple says it isn’t needed. For Intel Macs, use Apple’s documented Option-Command-P-R shortcut for NVRAM/PRAM, and follow Apple’s current instructions for your exact model if you need an SMC reset.
Identify whether your Mac uses Intel or Apple silicon
Reset instructions depend on the processor generation. Apple’s Mac startup key combinations page says a Mac that is not Apple silicon is Intel-based. If you can start macOS, check the processor information in About This Mac. If the Mac will not turn on, use its model information or Apple’s support resources rather than guessing which reset applies.

How to reset PRAM or NVRAM on an Intel Mac
PRAM and NVRAM refer to memory that stores certain settings. Apple’s startup-combination guidance lists Option (⌥)-Command (⌘)-P-R for resetting NVRAM or PRAM on Intel-based Macs.

- Turn it on and immediately press and hold Option (⌥)-Command (⌘)-P-R together.
- Keep holding the keys through startup. Release them when the reset has taken effect or the Mac continues starting.
Apple’s support page documents the key combination but does not promise it will fix a particular symptom. If the shortcut does not register, shut down first and try again. A wireless keyboard may not be recognized early enough during startup; use the built-in keyboard on a laptop or connect a keyboard by wire if possible.

How to reset the SMC on an Intel Mac
The System Management Controller (SMC) is separate from NVRAM/PRAM. An SMC reset is relevant only to Intel Macs, and its procedure varies by Mac configuration. Apple’s Mac won’t turn on troubleshooting points Intel owners to SMC guidance, but the steps are not one universal key sequence. Select the current Apple instructions for your exact model before proceeding; do not substitute instructions for a different Intel Mac.
Apple Support explicitly says, “You don’t need to do this on a Mac with Apple silicon.” Do not attempt an Intel SMC reset on an Apple silicon Mac.

If your Mac will not turn on
Try Apple’s basic power checks before moving to an SMC reset:
- Check that the power cable is undamaged and firmly connected to a working outlet.
- Hold the power button for about 10 seconds, release it, then press it normally.
- Unplug accessories and try starting the Mac again.
- If it is an Intel Mac and it still will not start, consult Apple’s model-appropriate SMC instructions.
If the Mac remains unresponsive after these checks, Apple says it may need service.

When to use macOS Recovery instead
Recovery is a different troubleshooting route, not an SMC or PRAM reset. On an Apple silicon Mac, shut down, then press and hold the power button until startup options appear. Select Options to enter Recovery. Apple describes built-in Recovery tools such as disk repair and macOS reinstall in its Apple silicon Recovery instructions. A reinstall or erase workflow can have consequences beyond a reset, so use the instructions for that specific task and do not treat it as a routine reset.

Apple’s checklist for preparing a Mac for sale, transfer, trade-in, or recycling notes an NVRAM reset for Intel Macs, but that is not the same as erasing a Mac or preparing it for a new owner. Follow Apple’s before you sell, give away, trade in, or recycle your Mac guidance for that separate process.
