Why do the graphics look like an old PlayStation game?
The visual style is deliberate. Steam says the game runs at 320×240 resolution and calls back to older hardware’s unstable vertices and misaligned textures. Those traits make “PS1-era” a useful shorthand for the appearance, not a claim that the game runs on original PlayStation hardware.

Low-resolution geometry and imperfect-looking textures give the environments an awkward, dreamlike quality. That does not make Fatum Betula a Backrooms tie-in. Fatum Betula is a natural fit if you want to explore strange environments, piece together light puzzles and see how a surreal premise branches toward different endings. Its 320×240 presentation is part of the experience, so it is better suited to players who appreciate intentional retro roughness than to someone seeking modern photorealistic visuals.

Those are useful ways to frame a choice, not claims that Fatum Betula has been measured against particular competing games.
