For most visitors, the UK’s current travel advice does not say to avoid the Costa del Sol because of the recent shootings. The attacks are serious, but the reports available do not show that ordinary tourists face a high or quantified risk across the region. No trip is risk-free: check the latest official advice and local updates before you travel, and follow sensible safety precautions.
What happened in Málaga?
Two high-profile shootings in Málaga city within a week prompted renewed attention to organized crime in the area. In a report dated 24 September 2026, SUR in English said a 20-year-old construction worker was fatally shot after gunmen allegedly mistook him for a threat. The report described him as having no criminal connections. A separate man was shot on the terrace of a restaurant at Muelle Uno, a busy waterfront area.

Chief Superintendent Luis Esteban, a senior National Police commander for Eastern Andalucía, warned: “We have a ticking time bomb right under our feet.” That was a police commander’s warning about organized crime and resources, not a travel advisory or a quantified estimate of the risk to tourists.

The reports link the attacks to organized-crime tensions, but they do not establish that visitors are broadly being targeted. One victim was reportedly mistaken for a threat; the other shooting occurred in a public restaurant setting. Those details underline that violence can have consequences beyond its intended targets, but two reported incidents cannot show how likely a visitor is to be caught up in one.
#1 Best Overall
The published reports do not provide a robust statistic for a tourist’s probability of exposure to gang violence, nor enough comparable information to rank Costa del Sol towns by visitor risk. It would be misleading to turn news coverage or raw police figures into a personal risk estimate.
What do police figures and the response tell us?
A follow-up SUR in English report on 28 September said police sources believed around ten planned gangland killings had been prevented on the Costa del Sol during the previous year. It also reported five fewer murders in the first half of 2026 than in the same period of 2025. These are figures attributed to police sources, not a measure of tourist victimization or proof that the threat has been eliminated.
The same report said the National Police had solved all provincial homicides over the previous three years. That is a police performance claim, not a measure of overall crime or visitor safety. SUR also reported that the government had announced more officers and a greater police presence in Málaga city. A government sub-delegate called Málaga a safe province and said crime rates were declining year on year, but the report did not give underlying comparative data or the number of additional officers.
What does the UK travel advice say?
The FCDO’s Spain travel advice, current on 10 September 2026, says: “No travel can be guaranteed safe.” Its reviewed guidance does not single out the Costa del Sol over the gang shootings or advise against visiting on that basis. That is not the same as an official guarantee that a destination is safe.

The advice recommends researching your destination and choosing travel insurance suited to your itinerary, activities and emergency expenses. Its safety guidance also advises visitors to be alert to street crime and distraction theft, secure valuables, check accommodation security, take care in nightlife settings, watch for drink spiking and stay with friends. Call 112 in an emergency.

- Keep passports, phones and other valuables secure, and stay alert to distraction theft in busy public places.
- Check that your accommodation has suitable security before booking and on arrival.
- In nightlife settings, keep your drink in sight and stay with friends.
- Choose insurance that fits your planned activities and potential emergency costs; read the policy terms rather than assuming it covers every incident or disruption.
- Save 112 as the emergency number, and check the latest FCDO Spain advice and local reporting shortly before departure.
The reported shootings and police operations can change, so the situation at the time of reading may differ from the reports above. The available information supports caution and staying informed; it does not support a reliable town-by-town tourist-risk ranking or a claim that visitors face a high, measured risk across the Costa del Sol.
