Resetting an Amazon Fire Kids tablet to factory settings erases downloaded content, including in-app purchases, and deregisters the tablet from your Amazon account. If the tablet still opens normally, go to Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults. You’ll need to register it again after the reset. Amazon’s factory-reset guide explains the consequences and steps.
Before you reset: know what will be erased
A factory reset restores the tablet to its original factory settings. Amazon says it removes all downloaded content, including in-app purchases, and deregisters the device from the Amazon account. You must register the tablet again before using it. This is different from simply restarting the tablet, which does not erase its contents.

- Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons together until Recovery Mode opens.
- Use the volume buttons to move through the menu to Wipe data/factory reset.

If you forgot a parental-controls password or PIN
On-device parental-controls password
Amazon says a factory reset is required to restore full access when the parental-controls password for an adult profile is forgotten. The reset still erases downloaded content and deregisters the tablet, so use the Settings or Recovery Mode procedure above as appropriate. Amazon distinguishes adult-profile parental controls from the controls configured for a child profile; see Set Up Parental Controls on Your Fire Tablet.
Parent Dashboard PIN
A forgotten Parent Dashboard parental-controls PIN is a separate case from a forgotten on-device password. Amazon’s guidance is to deregister and then reregister the device through Manage Your Content and Devices. This is not the same procedure as wiping the tablet through Recovery Mode. See Amazon’s Parent Dashboard FAQ.
After the reset
Register the tablet to your Amazon account again. Then configure the child profile and its settings as needed. Child-profile settings are separate from adult-profile parental controls, and Amazon says many can be managed remotely; see What are Child Profile Settings on Fire Tablet?.
