Malicious websites can imitate familiar organizations, steal passwords, trigger harmful downloads, or send visitors through redirects to a different destination. No logo, search result, browser setting, or quick visual check can guarantee a site is safe. These seven habits reduce the chance of being tricked—and give you a practical response if you think you clicked something dangerous.
How can you tell if a website may be a scam?
Start with the address and the reason you arrived there. The FBI warns that malicious URLs can resemble legitimate ones, while criminal redirect systems may route visitors through intermediate sites before showing a phishing page, financial scam, or malware. Those systems can treat visitors differently based on factors such as location, device, operating system, and browser, so a harmless-looking preview does not clear a link. The FBI/IC3 described these tactics in a June 18, 2026 public service announcement.

- Read the domain carefully for misspellings, extra words, or an unexpected subdomain. A familiar logo does not verify the address.
- Be wary when a page or message unexpectedly asks for a password, payment, personal details, or a software installation.
- Do not treat HTTPS as proof that a site is honest. Encryption does not establish who operates a site or whether its request is legitimate.
- Remember that search results and ads can lead to deceptive destinations, and even a legitimate site can be compromised or redirect visitors.
The FBI defines phishing as “a form of social engineering in which cyber threat actors use email or malicious websites to solicit information.” The practical test is not whether a page looks polished, but whether its address and request make sense—and whether you reached it independently.

1. Check the actual web address
Before entering information or downloading a file, inspect the domain in the address bar. Look for subtle misspellings and unfamiliar words inserted before or after a recognizable name. A subdomain can also make an address appear related to a company without being its official site. If anything seems off, close the page and navigate to the service independently.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset

2. Pause when a request feels urgent or unexpected
Threats of account closure, surprise refunds, unpaid bills, or urgent security problems are reasons to stop—not reasons to act faster. Do not use a link or phone number supplied in the unexpected message. Instead, contact the organization through a number or website you already know is genuine. The FTC’s phishing guidance recommends this independent verification.
3. Avoid downloads from ads, pop-ups, and unfamiliar sites
Fake software ads can appear in search results and on social media. Find the software maker’s address yourself and download from a source you trust rather than following an ad or an unexpected prompt. Avoid unfamiliar free-download sites, and never call a support number shown in a pop-up. The FTC’s malware guidance is specific: “Never call a phone number that appears in a pop-up window.” See the FTC’s advice on protecting against, detecting, and removing malware.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
4. Heed browser warnings
A dangerous-site warning is a reason to leave, not a challenge to bypass. Chrome says phishing and malware protection is on by default and advises users not to visit a site that triggers its warning. As Google puts it, “If you see this warning, we recommend that you don’t visit the site.” A warning system is a useful signal, but an unflagged page is not guaranteed safe. Chrome Help explains warnings about unsafe sites.

5. Open important services independently
For banking, email, shopping, and account recovery, use a saved bookmark or type the known address yourself. This avoids relying on a link in an unsolicited email, text, social post, or advertisement. If you do not know the correct address, find it through a trusted source you use already rather than a message demanding immediate action.

6. Keep your browser, operating system, and security software updated
Updates can fix known security weaknesses. Turn on automatic updates where available, and use security software that receives regular updates and scans new files. The FTC’s malware guidance covers software updates, downloads, and scanning; CISA’s Secure Our World also emphasizes updates as a core safety habit.
7. Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication
Use a different strong password for each important account, and enable multifactor authentication (MFA) wherever it is offered. A password manager can help create and keep track of unique passwords. A compatible hardware security key is another MFA option, but support depends on the account and device. These protections can make stolen credentials less useful; they do not make a suspicious link safe. CISA’s Secure Our World guidance covers passwords, password managers, and MFA.

Which Chrome Safe Browsing setting should you choose?
Chrome offers Standard and Enhanced Safe Browsing. Enhanced Protection provides stronger, more customized protection, but Google says it sends more browsing information—including URLs and a small sample of page content—to Google. Choose based on your preferred balance of protection and privacy; neither setting can certify every site as safe. Chrome Help describes Safe Browsing protection levels and their data handling.
Google Safety Center calls Enhanced Protection “twice as safe” compared with Standard Protection. That is Google’s own comparison, not an independent study or a guarantee that a scam will be blocked. Google Safety Center’s online-scam and fraud guidance provides the vendor’s comparison.

What should you do if you clicked a suspicious link?
Clicking a link does not automatically mean your device is infected or your account is compromised. Respond to what happened: whether you entered a password or payment details, downloaded or ran a file, or noticed unusual device behavior.
- Stop interacting with the page. Do not enter more information, download anything else, or call a number shown in a pop-up.
- If you entered credentials or sensitive information, stop signing in on that device. Use a device you trust to change affected passwords, starting with email and other accounts that can reset passwords. Turn on two-factor authentication if it is not already enabled.
- If you downloaded or opened a file, update your security software and run a scan. Follow the software’s instructions for any detected threat. The FTC recommends scanning and securing accounts when malware is suspected.
- Seek trusted technical help if needed. Contact a support provider using contact details you find independently, not a number in the suspicious page or pop-up.
- Report suspected scams or criminal activity. The FTC accepts reports about scams and malware. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is an option for suspected criminal intrusion into a website.
Possible malware signs include unexpected browser redirects, new toolbars, frequent pop-ups, slowdowns or crashes, disabled system tools, or messages you did not send. These symptoms warrant investigation, but none alone proves that malware is present. The FTC provides further steps in its malware response guidance; the FBI/IC3 explains malicious redirects in its June 2026 public service announcement.
