The most reliable way to research Microsoft stock is to connect three layers of evidence: reported financial results, the breadth and profitability of cloud growth, and a valuation calculated from a timestamped share price. Start with Microsoft’s latest Form 10-K, Form 10-Q, earnings release and investor call. Record every numerator and denominator for the same fiscal period, then test whether Azure and broader cloud expansion are producing operating income and free cash flow after the cost of AI infrastructure.
Do not quote a P/E, enterprise-value multiple or price target without recording the share-price time, diluted-share date, fiscal period and whether the earnings figure is GAAP, adjusted, trailing or forward. The available operating data show a much larger business by fiscal 2026, but no synchronized October 19, 2026 share price or consensus estimate is established here, so the valuation section provides a calculation method rather than a fabricated live multiple.

Recommended Free Tools
- Latest Form 10-K: the annual filing supplies audited revenue, operating income, net income, diluted EPS, cash flow, capital spending, segment information, debt, cash and risk factors.
- Latest Form 10-Q: use it to update the annual picture with the most recent quarter and year-to-date trends.
- Earnings release: this usually gives a concise income statement, cash-flow highlights, segment results and management guidance.
- Investor call transcript or webcast: listen for demand, capacity, pricing, backlog, customer behavior and the explanation for margin changes.
Microsoft’s fiscal year ends June 30. Label each worksheet with the fiscal year or quarter, currency, and whether the value is GAAP or adjusted. Mixing a quarterly denominator with a full-year numerator can make a sound company look inexpensively or expensively valued by accident.

The minimum worksheet
| Field | Why it matters | Period and definition to record |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | Measures the scale and top-line growth rate. | GAAP, fiscal quarter or year. |
| Operating income | Shows profit from operations before interest and taxes. | GAAP and matching period. |
| Net income | Captures earnings after financing, taxes and non-operating items. | GAAP, with unusual items noted. |
| Diluted EPS | Required for a meaningful P/E calculation. | GAAP trailing EPS and any forward estimate separately. |
| Cash from operations | Tests whether accounting profit becomes cash. | Year-to-date or trailing twelve months. |
| Capital expenditures | Shows the cash required for data centers, servers and other assets. | Same cash-flow period; state whether purchases are gross or net of disposals. |
| Free cash flow | Cash available after capital spending. | Use Microsoft’s stated definition or disclose your own formula. |
| Diluted shares | Converts equity value into per-share results. | Use the share count that matches the EPS period; note buybacks and compensation dilution. |
| Cash and investments | Reduce enterprise value and indicate liquidity. | Balance-sheet date; include cash equivalents and short-term investments where appropriate. |
| Total debt | Added to market capitalization in enterprise value. | Same balance-sheet date as cash. |
| Segment and cloud revenue | Shows where growth originates and whether it is broad. | Use Microsoft’s reported segment definitions without adding overlapping measures. |
| Management guidance | Provides the company’s near-term range for revenue, margin or spending. | Record the date, period and whether guidance is reported as a range. |
Build a growth bridge without double-counting cloud revenue
Begin with total revenue, then explain the change using businesses that are reported on compatible bases. Microsoft Cloud is an aggregate measure. It includes Azure and other cloud services plus other cloud products, so it must not be added to Azure, Microsoft 365 commercial cloud or an Intelligent Cloud segment total. Treat each figure as a separate lens on the same company.
What the reported figures show
| Metric | Reported result | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft fiscal 2025 revenue | $281.7 billion | Baseline for company-wide growth. |
| Microsoft fiscal 2025 operating income | $128.5 billion | Profitability check against revenue growth. |
| Microsoft Cloud fiscal 2025 revenue | $168.9 billion, up 23% | Broad cloud lens; do not add to Azure or segment revenue. |
| Azure fiscal 2025 revenue | More than $75 billion, up 34% | Infrastructure and platform-cloud growth indicator. |
| Microsoft fiscal 2025 net income | $101.8 billion | Bottom-line result for GAAP earnings analysis. |
| Microsoft fiscal 2025 diluted EPS | $13.64 | Trailing EPS input when the share price is measured against that fiscal year. |
| Azure and other cloud services, fiscal 2026 Form 10-K | Up 41% | Use only with the exact fiscal 2026 revenue denominator from that filing. |
| Fiscal 2026 revenue reported by the Associated Press | $331.8 billion | Later company-wide base; confirm the associated period and source context before combining with other figures. |
| Quarterly Microsoft Cloud revenue reported in 2026 | $59.3 billion, up 27% | Quarter-specific cloud trend, not a full-year substitute. |
| Azure and other cloud services reported in 2026 | Up 43% | Keep the period and definition attached; do not merge it with the 41% fiscal-2026 figure without reconciliation. |
| Azure annual revenue reported in 2026 | More than $100 billion | Scale milestone stated by Microsoft and reported by the Associated Press. |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot reported in 2026 | More than 30 million paid seats | Evidence of AI product distribution; seats are not the same as revenue or profit. |
These numbers establish direction, not an investment conclusion. Azure growth is central, but the broader Microsoft Cloud figure grows more slowly or quickly depending on mix and period. The useful question is whether growth is broad across infrastructure, productivity, business applications and AI workloads, and whether each dollar of growth produces durable operating income and cash.
Calculate the bridge
- Calculate total-revenue growth:
(current-period revenue ÷ prior-period revenue) − 1. - Calculate each disclosed cloud or segment growth rate using the same formula and the same period length.
- List businesses that accelerated, decelerated or remained stable. Use reported segment names rather than inventing a reclassification.
- Compare the growth contribution with changes in operating income. A fast-growing line that carries heavy infrastructure costs may not yet improve company earnings.
- Reconcile the bridge to consolidated revenue. If the components overlap, show them as separate indicators instead of summing them.
Test whether cloud growth is high quality
Revenue growth is only attractive when it survives the income statement and cash-flow statement. Microsoft’s fiscal 2025 filing said cloud gross-margin percentage declined primarily because the company was scaling AI infrastructure, partly offset by efficiency gains. That disclosure makes capacity spending and margin progression essential parts of an Azure analysis.
Margin and profit checks
- Track gross margin for cloud-related disclosures when Microsoft provides it, while recognizing that aggregate cloud margins can move as product mix changes.
- Track operating income and operating margin for the relevant segment and for the company as a whole.
- Compare incremental operating income with incremental revenue. A growing revenue base with falling operating leverage needs a stronger explanation than one with stable or improving leverage.
- Separate temporary launch, restructuring or investment effects from the recurring cost structure; label any adjustment rather than silently removing it.
Cash conversion and capital intensity
- Compare cash from operations with net income.
- Subtract capital expenditures to obtain free cash flow under a clearly stated definition.
- Track capital expenditures and data-center commitments against demand, contracted revenue and management’s capacity commentary.
- Watch whether free-cash-flow growth lags revenue because AI servers, networking, land, power and data centers are being built ahead of monetization.
Microsoft’s chairman and chief executive, Satya Nadella, described cloud and AI as “the driving force of business transformation across every industry and sector.” Treat that statement as a strategic thesis to test against bookings, usage, pricing, margins, paid seats and cash generation—not as proof that returns on the investment are already secured.

Build Microsoft’s valuation from timestamped inputs
A valuation is a snapshot. Save the exact share-price time, exchange, currency, diluted-share date, balance-sheet date and fiscal denominator in the same worksheet. The framework below avoids quoting a stale or incomparable multiple.
Step 1: Calculate market capitalization
Market capitalization = current share price × diluted shares outstanding
Use a diluted share count that matches the price date as closely as possible. If the filing gives a weighted-average diluted count for the income statement rather than an end-of-period count, label that distinction. Stock-based compensation, option exercises and buybacks can make the figures diverge.

Use debt and cash from the same balance-sheet date. Microsoft’s fiscal 2025 annual report reported $94.6 billion of cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments at June 30, 2025, and said liquidity was expected to fund commitments for the foreseeable future. That is a historical balance-sheet fact, not a substitute for the latest quarter’s cash figure.
Step 3: Calculate and label each multiple
| Metric | Formula | Required qualification |
|---|---|---|
| P/E | share price ÷ diluted EPS |
Show trailing GAAP EPS separately from any forward estimate; state the fiscal period. |
| Price-to-sales | market capitalization ÷ trailing revenue |
Use trailing revenue in the same currency and period basis as peers. |
| EV/EBIT | enterprise value ÷ operating income |
Use operating income from the matching trailing period. |
| EV/EBITDA | enterprise value ÷ EBITDA |
Use only when depreciation, amortization and capital intensity are addressed; EBITDA can obscure the cost of data-center assets. |
| Free-cash-flow yield | free cash flow ÷ market capitalization |
State the free-cash-flow definition and trailing period; express the result as a percentage. |
Step 4: Handle growth-adjusted comparisons carefully
A PEG-style ratio can divide a P/E by an earnings-growth assumption, but the result is only as credible as that assumption. Identify whether growth is historical, management-guided or an analyst estimate; state the period and currency; and do not treat a single high-growth year as a permanent rate.
Compare Microsoft with its own history and peers
One multiple has little meaning without a reference set. Build a five-year history for Microsoft’s P/E, price-to-sales, EV/EBIT and free-cash-flow yield using consistent GAAP or adjusted definitions. Mark recessions, major acquisition effects, unusually high or low interest rates and periods of exceptional AI investment so that a historical average is not mistaken for fair value.

| Comparison axis | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Total-revenue growth | Which company is growing, and from what base? |
| Cloud-growth definition | Is the figure infrastructure cloud, a broader cloud aggregate, or a segment with overlapping products? |
| Operating and free-cash-flow margins | Does growth convert into profit and cash? |
| Capital-expenditure intensity | How much revenue or cash is required to build capacity? |
| AI monetization evidence | Are there paid seats, consumption, bookings or disclosed revenue, rather than only usage claims? |
| Net cash or net debt | How does the balance sheet change enterprise value and resilience? |
| Recurring-revenue mix | How much of sales is subscription or usage-based and how often can it reprice? |
| Valuation multiple | Is the denominator GAAP, adjusted, trailing or forward, and is it measured on the same date? |
| Rate and foreign-exchange sensitivity | How could discount rates or currency movements affect reported value and growth? |
Never rank Microsoft as “cheap” or “expensive” solely because its P/E is above or below a peer’s. A higher multiple may reflect stronger cash generation or a more durable recurring-revenue base; it may also reflect expectations that leave less room for an AI-demand slowdown.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Review capital returns, dilution and accounting quality
Per-share value depends on more than net income. Check:
- Stock-based compensation: compare the expense with actual dilution and the value of repurchases used to offset it.
- Buybacks and dividends: record cash returned, shares retired and whether distributions were funded by free cash flow or balance-sheet changes.
- Foreign exchange: distinguish constant-currency commentary from reported-dollar results.
- Investment gains or losses: identify unusual non-operating items that affect net income but may not recur.
- Tax disputes and tax-rate changes: determine whether an EPS movement reflects operations or a one-time tax effect.
Use diluted EPS for P/E and reconcile it to net income and diluted shares. If adjusted EPS is presented, show the adjustments and keep it separate from the GAAP result.

Read the risk-factor section rather than relying only on the headline growth rate. For Microsoft, the material checks include:
Best Value
- Competition in cloud infrastructure, productivity software and AI services.
- Execution and capacity constraints, including shortages of data-center equipment, power and energy.
- Cybersecurity incidents and service reliability.
- Regulatory scrutiny, privacy obligations and antitrust remedies.
- Customer concentration or a small number of unusually large contracts.
- Foreign-exchange movements and cross-border tax disputes.
- The possibility that AI demand, usage or pricing normalizes after an early surge.
Translate each risk into a measurable indicator: slower Azure growth, lower cloud gross margin, rising capex per dollar of cloud revenue, weaker free-cash-flow conversion, higher receivables, increased data-center commitments or a change in paid-seat growth.
A repeatable update process
- Download the latest 10-K, 10-Q, earnings release and call materials.
- Copy reported figures into a period-labeled worksheet; do not overwrite the prior period.
- Recalculate total revenue, cloud and segment growth using matching periods.
- Update operating margin, cash conversion, capital expenditures and free-cash-flow yield.
- Refresh cash, debt and diluted shares before calculating enterprise value or per-share multiples.
- Record the share-price timestamp and classify every denominator as GAAP, adjusted, trailing or forward.
- Compare the new results with Microsoft’s five-year history and a consistently defined peer set.
- Read the risk disclosures and management commentary for changes in capacity, pricing, demand and regulation.
- Write the conclusion as a range of scenarios—base, upside and downside—rather than a single point target when assumptions are uncertain.
How to interpret the evidence
The fiscal 2025 figures provide a clear baseline: $281.7 billion of revenue, $128.5 billion of operating income, $101.8 billion of net income, $13.64 of diluted EPS, Microsoft Cloud revenue of $168.9 billion growing 23%, and Azure revenue above $75 billion growing 34%. Later fiscal 2026 reporting indicates a materially larger base, including $331.8 billion of revenue, a quarterly Microsoft Cloud figure of $59.3 billion growing 27%, Azure and other cloud services growth reported at 41% in the fiscal 2026 Form 10-K and 43% in separate 2026 reporting, and annual Azure revenue above $100 billion. Keep those figures tied to their stated periods and definitions.
The investment question is therefore conditional. Microsoft can justify a premium valuation if cloud and AI demand remain broad, incremental margins stabilize as infrastructure scales, and free cash flow grows after capex. A lower multiple can still be risky if growth decelerates while capacity commitments, depreciation, regulation or competition remain high. A disciplined analysis updates the price and denominator immediately before publication and lets the cash-flow and margin evidence determine whether the growth is creating shareholder value.
