How to Research a New Crypto Token and Spot Common Scams

A token’s branding is easy to copy. Verify its exact address, inspect its controls and trading conditions, confirm claims independently, and stop when pressure or uncertainty remains.

Research a new crypto token by verifying its exact contract address or mint, examining what its code and administrators can do, checking liquidity and holder distribution, and independently confirming the project’s claims. Names, logos, badges, audits and scanner results are clues—not proof that a token is safe. If key facts cannot be verified or someone is pressuring you to act, do not buy or connect a wallet.

Start with the token’s exact identity

A token’s name, ticker and logo do not uniquely identify it. Someone can copy the branding of an established asset and promote a different token under the same name. Use the contract address on the relevant blockchain—or the mint address on Solana—to distinguish the asset you are investigating.

  1. Find the address on the project’s genuine website, reaching that site independently rather than through an unsolicited message, social post or search advertisement.
  2. Compare the address with the project’s own chain-specific documentation and a recognized ecosystem source.
  3. Search for that exact address or mint in a chain explorer. Confirm that the chain and address match; a similarly named result is not a substitute.
  4. Check that any exchange, wallet or pool you are considering refers to the same address.

Ethereum.org explains that token contracts can reuse names and symbols: “You cannot count on those fields for security.” On Solana, Explorer verification helps establish the canonical identity associated with a name, symbol and mint, but it is not an endorsement. Solana says verification does not guarantee a token’s value, safety or legitimacy.

Check what the token’s code and authorities can change

Read the available contract information and project documentation, and identify any permissions that could materially affect holders or trading. The exact controls depend on the chain and token design; do not assume that a familiar-looking token or a single reassuring label tells the whole story.

  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
  • Supply: Check whether an authority can mint additional tokens. If so, find out who controls that authority and whether the project documents how it may be used.
  • Transfers: Look for powers to freeze accounts, restrict transfers or otherwise prevent holders from moving or selling tokens.
  • Other privileged controls: Review whether an administrator can change parameters that affect trading or ownership, and whether the project explains those powers.
  • Evidence quality: Confirm that the contract or token information you are reviewing corresponds to the exact address you verified.

Solana’s automated risk signals include mint and freeze authority. An authority that is renounced or limited may reduce one particular kind of control, but it does not establish that the project is honest or eliminate other risks. On Ethereum, a token contract can also emit transfer events and specify balances, so displayed events or apparent holders should not be treated as conclusive proof of genuine activity.

Assess liquidity, trading conditions and holder distribution

Look for a real trading pool and consider whether its depth is sufficient for the kind of trade you are contemplating. A token can appear to have a quoted price while having little or no liquidity; in a thin market, even a small trade can move the price sharply or make selling difficult. Ethereum.org recommends checking a trusted decentralized-exchange pool, but there is no universal liquidity threshold that makes a token safe. Liquidity changes, and a large pool cannot prove that a project is trustworthy.

Where reliable chain data is available, inspect the distribution of tokens across holders. Pay attention to concentrated holdings, balances associated with a team or deployer, and any disclosed insider allocations or lock and unlock terms. Solana documentation includes holder distribution and liquidity among automated risk signals. Treat these as context rather than a pass/fail score: the reviewed official guidance establishes no universally safe holder percentage.

Verify the project’s claims outside its own promotion

Separate claims that can be checked from claims that rely on trust. Look for a working product or a clearly described use, people whose relevant histories can be confirmed independently, and milestones with evidence beyond the project’s own posts. If a project announces a partnership, check the named partner’s own announcement or documentation rather than relying on a logo or a claim on the token’s website.

If the project cites an audit, read the report itself. Check which exact contract and version it covers, what the audit included, and when it was performed. The existence of an audit report is not proof that every part of a project is safe, and the reviewed official guidance does not establish that an audit eliminates risk.

Apply the same caution to verification badges, exchange appearances and regulatory claims. They can be misrepresented, and a listing or badge does not establish that a token is legitimate. For US readers, Investor.gov cautions that an SEC filing does not necessarily mean a person or firm is registered with the SEC, or that the SEC has approved an investment.

Recognize pressure, impersonation and fake-profit tactics

Be wary of unsolicited investment approaches and anyone who tries to move a conversation from social media or messaging into a platform they control. The SEC’s May 29, 2024 alert describes fraudsters building trust through online contact and directing people to convincing but fake websites or apps. Scammers may display fabricated account gains, block withdrawals later, and demand additional fees or taxes to release supposed funds. Do not send more money to unlock a displayed balance or recover earlier losses.

Other warning signs include guaranteed high returns with little or no risk, invented testimonials, urgency, celebrity or official impersonation, and hype designed to push a rapid purchase. The SEC has also warned about pump-and-dump promotion: promoters hype an asset, sell into the demand they create, and leave later buyers exposed to a price drop. Its September 1, 2021 investor alert lists guaranteed returns, unlicensed or unregistered sellers, fabricated account values and too-good-to-be-true offers as warning signs. That alert is guidance, not a current statistical survey of how often scams occur.

Understand what a badge, scanner or reserve report can—and cannot—tell you

A scanner result reflects the checks it performs at the time it runs. A favorable result cannot establish every relevant fact about a token, its project or its future behavior. Solana explicitly says Explorer verification is not an endorsement and does not guarantee value, safety or legitimacy. Treat a badge as an identity aid where applicable, not a safety certificate.

Likewise, a proof-of-reserves report is not the same as an audited financial statement. The SEC’s 2023 investor bulletin says proof-of-reserves reports lack important protections provided by financial statement audits. Such a report should not be used as proof that a token or platform is safe.

Know the limits of regulatory claims

For US readers, the SEC’s page dated April 22, 2026 says the agency regulates offers and sales of securities, including crypto assets when they are securities; it also says some non-security crypto assets may be offered and sold subject to an investment contract. Whether securities laws apply depends on the facts. A general article, token badge or project statement cannot settle the legal status of a particular asset, and this US-specific context should not be generalized to other jurisdictions.

Use a stop-or-proceed checklist

Before acting, answer these questions using evidence tied to the exact token:

  • Can you independently confirm the correct contract address or mint?
  • Do you understand who can mint, freeze, restrict transfers or change relevant settings?
  • Can you find meaningful liquidity and understand the risk of price impact or difficulty selling?
  • Can you check holder concentration and verify important project claims outside the project’s own promotion?
  • Are you free to take time to investigate, without guaranteed-return claims or pressure from a stranger?
  • Can you understand how to sell the token and the permissions involved before buying?

Stop if you cannot independently verify the address, material permissions or promotional claims; if you do not understand whether you can sell; or if someone demands more payment to withdraw funds or recover a loss. Declining to buy while important facts remain opaque is a reasonable decision. This process can reduce risk, but it cannot certify a token as safe.

Keep token research separate from wallet security

Researching whether a token is credible is not the same as securing the wallet used to hold it. Investor.gov describes a seed phrase as a recovery sequence and notes that self-custody makes the user responsible for private keys. Never disclose a seed phrase or private key to a project, support agent, scanner or person who contacts you.
