Monitor API usage with request, error, latency, and payload-size metrics; use dashboards and logs to establish a baseline and spot changes. Control traffic separately with gateway throttling and quotas at the appropriate scope, and use authentication, authorization, and cost controls for protections that best-effort limits cannot guarantee.
What to monitor in production
Start with signals that show both demand and service health. Google identifies request counts, error rates, total and backend latency, and request and response sizes as useful API metrics for understanding usage, performance, and problems. Its API Dashboard and Cloud Monitoring documentation describes where Google API metrics can be viewed.

- Request volume: Count requests over time to find normal traffic patterns and unusual growth.
- Errors: Track error rates and, where available, status-code breakdowns to distinguish a traffic increase from failing calls.
- Latency: Compare total latency with backend latency where the platform exposes both; rising backend time can point toward service-side delays.
- Request and response sizes: Watch for shifts in payload volume that may affect processing or network load.
Use dimensions such as client, route, method, and status code when your telemetry supports them. The names, dimensions, retention, and alerting options are provider- and deployment-specific; these metrics should not be read as a promise that every platform exposes the same data.

Provider-native views and analytics
For AWS API Gateway REST APIs, usage-plan views can report requests used and remaining for each API key during its quota period, and usage data can be exported as JSON or CSV. See AWS usage plan documentation.

- FAST 15-MINUTE DEPLOYMENT – Provision and configure in just 15 minutes (down from 40+ minutes with previous models). Perfect for field technicians who need to get sites up and running quickly without deep networking expertise.
- UPGRADED PERFORMANCE – Powered by the Allwinner H618 processor with 1GB LPDDR4 RAM (double the previous generation). Enables accurate speed tests on gigabit connections and supports SNMP v3 encryption for enhanced security monitoring.
- PLUG-AND-PLAY SIMPLICITY – No complex configuration required. Simply connect to your network via the Gigabit Ethernet port, power up with the included USB-C cable, and start monitoring. Multi-VLAN support with just a few clicks in the interface.
- RISK MITIGATION FOR MSPs – Domotz maintains the operating system and security updates, transferring liability concerns away from your organization. Eliminates the security risks of deploying monitoring software on customer-managed servers or domain controllers.
- UNIVERSAL CONNECTIVITY – USB-C power port (more durable and universal than previous micro USB), Gigabit Ethernet port, and USB 2.0 port for future expansion. Premium casing designed for rack mounting or standalone deployment in professional environments.
Azure API Management offers analytics for API usage and performance. Its Azure Monitor-based dashboard requires a Log Analytics workspace as a source for API Management gateway logs. Microsoft’s observability overview describes built-in analytics, reporting and monitoring, and OpenTelemetry options; retention and management differ among those choices.
How to set useful alerts
Set a baseline from representative production traffic before choosing thresholds. Alert on both demand and symptoms: unexpected request growth, rising errors, or worsening latency. These are operational recommendations based on the available monitoring signals, not a universal vendor-prescribed alert policy.

How to control API consumption
Use gateway controls at the scopes the chosen service supports, and select a scope that corresponds to the behavior you need to manage. For AWS API Gateway, documented controls include regional account-level constraints, API or stage targets, method-level targets, and client-level limits through usage plans and API keys. A usage plan can associate keys with selected stages or methods and define target request rates and quota intervals. The AWS throttling documentation describes a token-bucket model with a steady request rate and burst capacity.
| Control scope | Typical purpose | Example documented by AWS |
|---|---|---|
| Account or region | Apply broad request constraints across APIs within the service scope. | Regional account-level constraints. |
| API or stage | Set a target for an API or a deployed stage. | API- and stage-level throttling targets. |
| Method | Manage traffic to a particular operation. | Method-level throttling targets. |
| Client or key | Meter and limit consumption associated with a client. | Usage-plan throttling and quotas associated with API keys. |
These are AWS API Gateway examples, not a claim that every gateway offers identical scopes or controls. Set rate and burst targets with backend capacity and legitimate traffic patterns in mind. A burst allowance absorbs short periods of elevated demand; it does not mean the backend can sustain that rate indefinitely.

Know what a quota can and cannot guarantee
A quota is useful for tracking or targeting per-client or product consumption, but it may not be a hard stop. AWS explicitly says API Gateway usage-plan throttling and quotas are best-effort targets that can be exceeded, and warns against relying on them to control costs or block access. Use purpose-built authorization for access decisions and appropriate cost controls, such as AWS Budgets for spend monitoring or AWS WAF for request management, as described in AWS usage plans and API keys guidance.
Keep keys separate from identity and permissions
An API key used to identify or meter a client is not, by itself, authentication or authorization. AWS advises using mechanisms such as IAM roles, Lambda authorizers, or Amazon Cognito user pools for access control. Decide who may call an API and what they may do independently of the usage identifier attached to a request.
Rank #4
Make clients handle throttling safely
When a gateway throttles a client, it may return HTTP 429 Too Many Requests. Clients should retry in a rate-limited way rather than immediately resubmitting every rejected request. Use bounded retries and backoff so many clients do not retry in synchrony and create a second traffic spike; follow the gateway’s documented behavior for the service in use. AWS describes the possible 429 response and rate-limited resubmission in its request throttling guidance.
Roll out quota changes without breaking deployed gateways
For Google Cloud API Gateway, quotas are defined through metrics and limits in API configuration. Google’s documentation says quotas apply to the API rather than only one API configuration, and the latest created configuration’s metrics and limits are enforced. If a metric is renamed or removed while older gateway deployments still use its prior definition, quota-enforced calls on those gateways can fail with HTTP 500. Keep quota metric names and limits aligned across active configurations, and coordinate changes with deployments. See Google Cloud API Gateway quota documentation.
Best Value
Review usage and adjust controls
Use live dashboards and alerts for operational response, then review consumption over a longer period to revise allocations. In AWS API Gateway REST API usage plans, inspect used and remaining quota by key and export usage data as JSON or CSV when you need to analyze it outside the live view. Provider-native reporting is useful for understanding recorded usage, but it does not change the enforcement guarantees of the associated quota.
When evaluating gateway or API-management options, compare enforcement scope, whether a limit is hard or best effort, available metrics and exports, telemetry retention and operating requirements, and the boundary between usage identification and authorization. AWS documents best-effort usage-plan enforcement, Google documents quota effects across API configurations, and Azure documents multiple analytics and observability approaches; these are specific operational distinctions rather than a complete feature ranking.
