How to Compare After-School Programs for Safety, Cost, and Activities

Compare after-school programs with the same checklist: verify local oversight, ask about safety and supervision, calculate total cost and schedule fit, and assess activities and individual support.

Compare each after-school program using the same checklist: verify its local licensing or oversight status, ask about safeguarding and supervision, calculate the full cost and schedule fit, and assess whether the activities and support suit your child. A license or rating is useful evidence, but neither guarantees quality or personal fit.

How do I compare after-school programs for safety, cost, and activities?

Make a short scorecard and use the same questions for every provider. Record what you can verify in writing, what the provider explains, and what you observe during a visit. Compare the answers against your family’s needs rather than choosing by a single rating, fee, or activity list.

  1. Check oversight: Is the program licensed, lawfully exempt, or overseen by another agency? Find out whether inspection, monitoring, complaint, or quality-rating records are available.
  2. Check safety and staffing: Ask about safeguarding, staff checks and training, first aid, supervision, emergencies, visitors, and complaints.
  3. Work out the real cost and schedule: Confirm all fees, hours, closures, transport or school collection, late pickup arrangements, and available places.
  4. Assess the afternoon: Ask what children do and observe whether they seem engaged in age-appropriate activities.
  5. Confirm individual support: Discuss disability access, allergies, medication, and any personal-care needs relevant to your child.

Is the program licensed or otherwise overseen?

Rules depend on where you live and the type of program. In the United States, state and territory rules determine whether school-age programs need a child-care license; some programs may instead be monitored by another public agency or qualify for a legal exemption. Start with your local child-care agency and confirm the status of the specific provider. ChildCare.gov explains that licensing sets minimum health and safety requirements but does not guarantee quality: Understanding Child Care Quality Ratings and School-Age Child Care and Camp Programs.

In England, the Department for Education says out-of-school settings do not have one legal framework, and staff and volunteers are not typically inspected or assessed by a regulator. The department’s guidance, updated 6 February 2026, is specific to England; it should not be treated as a description of rules elsewhere. Check the provider’s local status with the relevant authority. Using after-school clubs, tuition and community activities.

Where records exist, read the latest inspection or monitoring report and check whether complaints or violations were recorded and how any issue was addressed. In the United States, quality-rating systems vary by state and may consider staff education and training, activities, health and safety, staffing, and business practices. Treat a rating as one comparison tool, not proof that a particular program is right for your child. ChildCare.gov’s steps for parents include checking available information and visiting programs: Getting Started: Simple Steps for Finding and Choosing Child Care.

What should I ask about safety and supervision?

Ask for the provider’s written safeguarding or child-protection policy, complaints procedure, and emergency arrangements. A clear answer should identify who is responsible and explain what happens in ordinary situations such as school collection as well as emergencies.

  • Who is responsible for first aid, and what happens in a medical emergency or fire?
  • How are visitors controlled, and how are children accounted for during transitions and pickup?
  • How can parents raise a concern or make a complaint, and who responds?
  • What emergency contacts and medical information do you collect, and how is that information stored?
  • Can I review your latest inspection or monitoring report, if one is available?

Be cautious if premises appear unsafe, no one can explain the first-aid or complaints arrangements, adults are present without clear oversight, supervision seems inadequate, or staff checks and training are unclear. Unsupervised one-to-one contact without consent is also a warning sign identified in England’s Department for Education guidance. Adapt these questions to your local rules: they are not a substitute for checking the requirements that apply where you live.

How do I compare staffing?

Ask how many children and staff are usually present in your child’s group, including during transitions, school collection, and late pickup. Find out the children’s age range, who directly supervises the group, how staff cover breaks or absences, and whether your child is likely to see familiar staff regularly. A single ratio is not a universal legal threshold; requirements and appropriate arrangements depend on location and setting.

A U.S. Department of Education guide, After-School Programs: Keeping Children Safe and Smart, recommends a staff-to-student ratio of 1:10 to 1:15 for enrichment groups of children age six and older. The publication year is not stated in the document view. Treat that figure as an attributed guide recommendation for that context—not as current law or a benchmark that applies to every program. The guide also emphasizes qualified staff, professional development, safe and accessible spaces, and activities that reflect children’s interests and abilities: After-School Programs: Keeping Children Safe and Smart.

What is the full cost, and does the schedule work?

Ask for the complete fee and what it includes; do not assume the quoted price covers every day, activity, meal, or transport arrangement. Request the usual hours, closure dates, available places, school collection or transport details, and late-pickup policy. In the United States, ask whether the provider accepts any child-care assistance or subsidy that applies to your family.

How can I tell whether activities will suit my child?

Ask for a typical afternoon schedule rather than relying on a general activity list. Find out how the program balances homework support, free play, sports, arts, outdoor time, enrichment, and snacks if offered. There is no universal required mix in the cited guidance; the right balance depends on the program and what your child enjoys and needs.

During a visit, look for safe, accessible, age-appropriate space and materials, varied activities, and signs that children have choices and are engaged. Ask how staff learn about children’s interests and abilities and adapt activities accordingly. ChildCare.gov suggests considering whether children appear happy and involved in age-appropriate activities; the U.S. Department of Education guide also highlights enrichment that reflects children’s interests and abilities.

How will the provider support my child’s individual needs?

Be specific about any disability or special educational need, allergy, medication, or personal-care support your child may need. Ask what the provider can accommodate, who will be responsible, how information is shared with relevant staff, and how arrangements work during activities and emergencies.

England’s Department for Education guidance suggests asking about support for special educational needs or disabilities and personal care, including toileting, changing, feeding, and medication. These prompts are useful for framing a conversation, but the arrangements and applicable duties depend on the provider and jurisdiction. Confirm practical details directly and share relevant medical concerns and emergency contacts.

Questions to take on a visit

  • What is your licensing status, or what rule makes the program exempt? Which agency oversees you?
  • May I review your latest inspection or monitoring report and complaints process?
  • Who is the safeguarding lead, what training have they had, and when was it refreshed?
  • What checks and training do staff and volunteers receive?
  • Who handles first aid, and what happens in an emergency or if pickup is late?
  • How many children and staff are usually present in my child’s group, including at collection?
  • What is the full fee, what does it include, and do you accept applicable local assistance?
  • How do children get from school to the program, and what happens if a child is not collected on time?
  • What does a typical afternoon look like, including homework, free choice, enrichment, and outdoor play?
  • How will you support my child’s disability, allergies, medication, or personal-care needs?
  • Can I visit during a session, and how can parents raise concerns?

Some questions may not fit every kind or size of provider. The Department for Education notes that answers vary by setting, so focus on whether the provider can explain its own responsibilities and arrangements clearly.
