Build a sequence of maps from different dates, pair tithe maps with their apportionments, and check your interpretations against estate, manorial, enclosure and archaeological evidence. No single map proves what stood at a site: each source has a date, purpose, coverage and level of accuracy that shape what it can show.
The guidance and archive links below focus mainly on England and Wales. The right record office and catalogue depend on the site’s location, and a particular monastery’s records may not survive or may be held in several repositories.

1. Identify the place before searching
Begin with a working identification rather than a single modern place-name. Record what you know, and search spelling variants because historical catalogues may index a site differently from current maps.

- Modern site name and any historical spellings
- Parish, county and nearby settlement
- Religious house type, such as an abbey or priory
- Known religious order or dedication, if established
These details help distinguish the monastery from similarly named places and point you toward the archive responsible for the area. Do not assume a catalogue will use the name now shown on a map.

2. Search local records and heritage catalogues first
For local maps, start with the county or metropolitan archive for the site’s area and search its catalogue. Also check the local HER, which can point to archaeological records, reports and known site features. The National Archives (TNA) says its own map holdings are not geographically complete or consistently arranged as a local-map service; local repositories are often the better first stop. See TNA’s guidance on maps and plans.
Once you have searched local catalogues, use national catalogues and collections to broaden the search. TNA’s overview of maps and plans points readers to online historical-map collections including the National Library of Scotland, A Vision of Britain through Time and British History Online. Their coverage and availability differ, so treat a missing online result as a reason to check other catalogues, not proof that no map exists. Published Ordnance Survey maps are generally sought through legal deposit libraries, as TNA advises.
3. Search maps from several periods
Do not limit the search to maps made in the medieval period. A surviving medieval map may not depict the site at the detail you need. TNA’s map holdings extend from the medieval period, but most are from the seventeenth to twentieth centuries. Later maps can help trace changes in roads, fields, boundaries, watercourses, buildings and place-names around a monastery.

For each candidate map, note its date, scale, geographic coverage, creator or series, original purpose, repository and catalogue reference. Also record whether you are viewing an original or a copy and any stated accuracy or certification. These details determine which comparisons are meaningful: a map made to administer land is not automatically a reliable plan of archaeological remains.
4. Use tithe maps and apportionments together
In England and Wales, tithe records can connect a mapped plot to written information about its land use and people. Find the site or surrounding land on the tithe map, note the plot number, then look up that number in the corresponding apportionment. The National Archives identifies the main record series as IR 30 for tithe maps and IR 29 for apportionments. Its tithes research guide explains how to look for them.
- Locate the relevant tithe map and establish which area it covers.
- Identify the plot or plots of interest and write down each number.
- Find the matching entries in the apportionment.
- Record the listed owner, occupier, land use and rentcharge where given.
- Keep the map and its matching written entry linked in your notes.
A tithe map was made to administer tithe commutation, not to serve as a modern archaeological plan. TNA notes that scale and accuracy vary. First-class maps were certified as sufficiently accurate for legal evidence of boundaries and plots; second-class maps range from near-misses to rough topographical sketches. Do not treat every boundary as equally precise, assign a universal meaning to a colour or symbol, or conclude that a feature did not exist simply because it is absent.

5. Build a map regression
A map regression is a comparison of maps in date order, beginning with the earliest available. Historic England’s archaeological standards guidance calls for this approach. Use a consistent geographic extent where possible, and record what changes between maps rather than relying on memory.

- Compare the monastery site and its surroundings at similar extents.
- Record changes to boundaries, roads, watercourses, buildings, field names and land use.
- Separate what a map explicitly depicts from what you infer by comparing it with another map.
Historic local maps may preserve place-names or landscape features that later maps changed or omitted. A map regression can show when a feature first appears in the maps you have found; by itself, it does not establish when that feature was originally built or prove that an unshown feature was absent.
6. Add records about ownership and land change
Maps show spatial relationships, while documentary records may explain ownership, rights or how land was redistributed. Depending on the site, search for estate, manorial, enclosure and post-dissolution records. Their survival and location must be checked for the particular monastery; they are not guaranteed to be held in one central archive.

Manorial records
The National Archives’ Manorial Documents Register guide explains how to identify manorial documents and lordships. Use it to find possible records and repositories, then verify catalogue details and whether relevant documents survive.
Enclosure awards and maps
Enclosure awards and maps may document land ownership and distribution, roads, rights of way and boundaries. TNA’s enclosure records guide notes that these materials are dispersed across repositories. Check both the relevant local archive and other repositories identified by catalogues.
7. Check archaeological and aerial evidence
Search the local HER and relevant archaeological archives and reports for work connected with the site. Aerial photographs and lidar can help identify and map archaeological features, offering a separate line of evidence to compare with historic maps. Historic England’s aerial investigation guidance identifies sources including the Historic England Archive, CUCAP, local collections such as those held by local authorities in HERs, and online aerial imagery.
Use aerial evidence to test a map-based interpretation, not as a substitute for dated documentary evidence. A feature visible in an image may help locate or characterize a landscape feature, but its date and meaning require corroboration.
8. Keep a source log and state what each source supports
For every map, image or document, record its creator or series, date, repository, catalogue reference, scale if supplied, geographic coverage and original purpose. Note whether it is an original or copy and any accuracy caveat. This makes later comparisons traceable and helps prevent an interpretation from being mistaken for a statement in the source.
When writing up your findings, distinguish three things: what the record explicitly says or depicts, what you infer by comparing sources, and what remains uncertain. A tithe apportionment may name an owner or land use; a sequence of maps may suggest a boundary changed; neither necessarily establishes the medieval date of a surviving feature.
