Some manufacturers accept slim or negative hardware margins and expect game and subscription sales to help earn money later; others aim to preserve a hardware margin. Component costs can also rise, so a console’s price does not always fall as it ages.
What goes into a console’s price?
A modern console is a custom-designed system, not just a processor in a box. Its cost includes components such as the processor, memory, storage, cooling and power delivery, plus the controller and chassis. Manufacturing, assembly, supplier pricing, labor, shipping and development work add to the cost of bringing it to market. The price on a store shelf does not reveal a console’s exact cost to make. Manufacturers do not publish complete, audited per-model cost breakdowns, so a precise bill of materials or profit figure should not be treated as established fact.

A console is also the entry point to a platform. A manufacturer may price hardware aggressively to attract players, then seek revenue from games, subscriptions and services over time. This has been a common approach, but it is not a universal rule. Microsoft said in June 2026 that consoles are typically sold for less than they cost to make; TrendForce has likewise described software and subscription revenue as historically central to console profitability. Nintendo, discussing Switch 2 pricing in 2025, said it aimed to maintain hardware margins, even if slimmer than software margins. The strategy can differ by company, product and generation.

For historical perspective, WIPO says the original PlayStation launched in the United States at $299 in 1995, $100 below Sega Saturn at the time. That example illustrates how pricing can support a platform’s competitive position; it does not establish a rule for today’s consoles or their margins.
Why an older console may not get cheaper
Price cuts are not automatic. Component costs, supply conditions and a manufacturer’s pricing decisions can offset the usual expectation that hardware gets cheaper with age. Microsoft announced on June 25, 2026, that storage and memory prices had increased more than 2.5 times and that global Xbox console price increases would take effect August 1, 2026. TrendForce’s December 2, 2025 analysis estimated that memory modules would represent 21–23% of Nintendo Switch 2 hardware costs in 2026, and projected memory would exceed 35% of Sony and Microsoft’s total bill of materials by 2026. Those are analyst estimates and projections, not audited manufacturer disclosures. TrendForce also forecast a 4.4% year-over-year decline in global console shipments in 2026 and said rising memory costs could limit mid-cycle price cuts. Why premium models cost more
A higher-priced model can include more capable hardware or features that the standard version lacks. Sony announced the PS5 Pro in September 2024 with a 2 TB SSD, a GPU with 67% more compute units and memory 28% faster than the then-current PS5, plus advanced ray tracing and AI-driven upscaling. Sony said the Pro could render gameplay up to 45% faster; that is the company’s claim, and the benefit depends on supported games. Those specifications help explain the premium tier, but they do not mean every player will see equal value. Consider whether the games you play support the Pro’s features, whether you need the extra storage, and whether you want a disc drive before comparing the price with a standard model.

These 2026 prices should not be confused with the PS5 Pro’s U.S. launch recommended price of $699.99, announced in September 2024 for its November 7, 2024 release. The later $899.99 U.S. recommended price is the figure Sony listed effective April 2, 2026.

Compare the setup you would actually use, not just the headline price. A lower initial price can change once you add accessories or games that matter to you.
