How to reschedule depends on whether your appointment is for an immigrant or nonimmigrant visa. For an immigrant-visa interview in Rio de Janeiro, the U.S. Department of State directs applicants to register their original NVC/KCC appointment online and then use the appointment service to choose a new date. For a nonimmigrant visa, check the appointment system linked to your case and follow the instructions shown in your account; earlier slots may appear, but they are not guaranteed.
First, identify your visa category
Check your appointment confirmation to see whether you have an immigrant-visa or nonimmigrant-visa interview. The Brazil-specific rescheduling instructions described below apply to immigrant-visa applicants interviewing in Rio de Janeiro. Do not assume they apply to every visa category or consular location in Brazil.

Reschedule an immigrant-visa interview in Rio de Janeiro
- Register the original appointment. If your appointment was scheduled by the National Visa Center (NVC) or Kentucky Consular Center (KCC), register that original appointment online before trying to change it.
- Sign in to the appointment service. The Rio post directs applicants who cannot attend to go to ais.usvisa-info.com and select a new appointment date.
- Review the available date and your case timing before confirming. The next available interview may involve a significant wait. If your immigrant-visa category is numerically limited, check the current Visa Bulletin before changing dates: visa availability may not continue until the later interview. Follow any case-specific instructions from the post.
The Rio instruction is for immigrant-visa cases: it tells applicants unable to attend to use the online appointment service to choose another date. It does not say that the consulate reschedules the interview for you.

Change a nonimmigrant-visa appointment
For a nonimmigrant visa (NIV), sign in to the appointment system associated with your case, check the dates it offers, and follow the current Brazil-specific directions displayed in your account. The Department of State says applicants who already have an appointment may check for an earlier available slot. Slots are released regularly, so availability can change; an earlier date is possible, not promised.
#1 Best Overall
The Department’s published wait-time estimates are updated monthly, but they are not a prediction of the date you will personally be offered. It states that “The average wait times we report do not guarantee a visa applicant will get an appointment within a specific time.” Check the Global Visa Wait Times page for context, then rely on the dates shown in your own appointment account.
Check where you are applying from
For nonimmigrant visas, the Department of State’s guidance is generally to apply in your country of nationality or residence. If you are applying based on residence, be prepared to demonstrate that residence. Review the Department’s July 15, 2026 guidance on nonimmigrant visa applicants applying in their country of residence and the instructions attached to your case before changing plans.
Rank #2
If you need to move the date because documents are not ready
For immigrant-visa interviews at the Rio post, required original documents matter: effective July 1, 2025, the post says applicants who arrive without all required originals will not be interviewed and must schedule a new date. This is a Rio immigrant-visa instruction, not a rule established here for every Brazil location or nonimmigrant case. Check the post’s Rio de Janeiro immigrant-visa instructions and your case-specific checklist before deciding whether to keep or change the appointment.

Details to confirm in your account
- Use the appointment portal linked to your own case and follow its current instructions; the reviewed official guidance does not establish every Brazil NIV screen or click.
- Confirm any rescheduling limits and fee or refund consequences in the live portal or official instructions for your visa category. Do not assume a particular number of changes or that a change is free.
- Do not count on an earlier date becoming available, or treat a published wait estimate as a guaranteed appointment date.
