If you can’t patch a Fortra BoKS environment immediately, first identify the installed versions and enabled features, then match each exposed function to the applicable Fortra advisory. Apply the vendor’s documented temporary restrictions where available; use clearly labeled, narrowly scoped containment for other paths; record service impacts and ownership; and schedule and verify the applicable fix. These steps can reduce exposure, but they do not remove the underlying vulnerabilities.
1. Inventory the BoKS components and features in use
BoKS is Fortra’s privileged access management product for centrally managing Linux and UNIX environments. The relevant risk and fix depend on the installed branch, component versions, enabled services, and integrations.

boks_autoregisterdor client autoregistration;- legacy tar-installed clients that may receive upgrade or patch operations;
- CRL URL administration through BCC, WSI REST/SOAP, or

Do not infer affected status from a product name or version family alone. Fortra’s product security index lists eight BoKS advisories dated October 1, 2026 (FI-2026-012 through FI-2026-019), covering issues including password generation, temporary files, CRL handling, network parsing, autoregistration, SSH, and Server Agent behavior. The available advisory information does not establish complete affected-version ranges for every issue.

2. Match enabled functions to the advisory paths
Use the functions you found in the inventory to decide which paths need immediate attention. The table separates vendor-documented workarounds from temporary operational precautions; a precaution is not a vendor-confirmed fix.

3. Apply temporary controls under change control
- Prioritize the explicit vendor workarounds. For
boks_autoregisterd, restrict access to the service; if you choose to disable it, follow Fortra’s documented procedure and record that autoregistration will stop. For legacy tar-based clients, defer upgrade or patch operations on clients that are not trusted. - Contain other paths narrowly. Reduce CRL URL modification authority, limit local access to the Master and
BOKS_tmp, and constrain exposure of relevant network-facing interfaces only where operations permit. Label these as temporary precautions and seek Fortra’s validation; they are not proof that a vulnerable component is fixed. - Review identity exposure with the directory owners. Determine whether BoKS keytab management or Server Agent
adjoinhas been used, and have the directory/security teams assess the relevant service or machine accounts with Fortra. Avoid assuming that the service-account issue requires BoKS or host administrator credentials for the described ticket-request path. - Make and record production changes deliberately. Do not copy unreviewed shell changes into production. Use your organization’s change-control process and Fortra’s procedure for service configuration changes.
4. Record impact, accountability, and residual risk
For each affected asset or control, record the control owner, implementation time, operational side effects, residual exposure, and planned patch window. Note which controls are vendor-documented and which are temporary operational precautions. Monitor authentication, privileged changes, Master behavior, and service availability while exposure remains; for boks_portmux, specifically watch for repeated service interruptions.

Fortra’s October 2, 2026 release notes list Server s-9.0.0.7 fixes for several October issues, including cryptographic randomness for Active Directory service-account passwords, protection of temporary CA secrets and host credentials, prevention of CRL command injection, a malformed TLS ClientHello crash, and an autoregistration proxy buffer overflow. The accessed release notes do not establish a complete 8.1 server fix matrix for all October advisories, so confirm the fixed build for your actual branch and component combination with Fortra rather than assuming one version resolves every path.

Check compatibility before upgrading: Fortra warns not to use Server s-9.0.0.7 with Client c-9.0.0.6 for Entra ID authentication, because authentication might fail or use another permitted authentication method. Fortra says to wait for Client c-9.0.0.7 or upgrade the server and client together.

- Confirm with Fortra which fixed packages cover your installed branches, components, and enabled features.
- Check the package combination against your integrations, including Entra ID authentication where used.
- Install the applicable updates through your normal change process and verify package installation and affected component behavior.
- Remove interim restrictions only when the fixed components are confirmed and restoring the affected service or authority is operationally safe.
