How to reach the right U.S. embassy or consulate
- Open the Brazil Travel Advisory and find the contact information for the embassy or consulate nearest your location.
- Follow the listed instructions for an emergency during business hours or after hours. After-hours routing varies by post; some consular agencies direct callers to a regional embassy or consulate.
- If the nearest post cannot be reached, use the State Department’s fallback number for your calling location: 888-407-4747 from the United States or Canada, or 202-501-4444 from elsewhere.
Do not assume one national embassy number is the right after-hours number for every city. The State Department’s live advisory is the best place to confirm the current post-specific number and routing.
What U.S. consular staff can help with
The State Department describes assistance that can include help with a lost or stolen U.S. passport, support after a crime, and guidance about returning to the United States during a crisis or after a natural disaster. The Brazil advisory also describes limited loan assistance in qualifying cases. Assistance depends on the circumstances and applicable rules; it is not guaranteed funding.

Consular assistance is not a replacement for Brazilian police, emergency medical care, private legal representation, or payment of all costs. Staff cannot control Brazilian authorities or court proceedings.

Contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate using the Brazil advisory’s current contact information, and consult the State Department’s arrest and detention guidance. Consular staff may provide assistance under applicable rules, but they cannot get someone released, choose or pay for a lawyer, or intervene in a court case.
If a passport is lost or stolen
Contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate through the current Brazil advisory contact list to ask about replacing a U.S. passport. If the loss or theft is part of an immediate threat or crime, contact local responders as appropriate; consular help does not replace local emergency response.

Embassy and consulate numbers, after-hours coverage, and regional routing can change. The Brazil Travel Advisory was reported updated August 6, 2026, with advisory history through August 31, 2026; check the live page when you need help rather than relying on a saved number. The State Department’s emergency financial assistance guidance explains that any loan assistance is limited and subject to applicable requirements.
