Use the removal date shown for the game in the PlayStation Store for your account’s region as your deadline. A downloaded Game Catalog title is not a permanent purchase: once it leaves the service, you can no longer access it through PS Plus. Check that your plan includes the Game Catalog, then choose a realistic completion goal and schedule the remaining play before that date.
Check the game’s actual deadline and your plan
On the game’s PlayStation Store or catalog listing, check the displayed end date for the region linked to your account. Catalog availability changes, and dates can differ by region; an old article or another player’s listing may not reflect your deadline. Sony says some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles have end dates and are removed from PlayStation Plus (Sony’s PlayStation Plus FAQ).

Game Catalog access is part of Extra and Premium, not Essential. Essential includes monthly games instead, which follow different access rules: monthly games added to your account remain playable while your membership is active, whereas a catalog game is available only while it remains in the service and you have the relevant plan. Sony explains these distinctions in its membership FAQ.
Membership expiration is a separate deadline. If you cancel, Sony says benefits continue until the paid membership period ends; when membership ends, subscription benefits cease (Sony’s cancellation guidance). For a catalog game, plan around whichever comes first: the title’s removal or the end of your membership.

Start playing as soon as practical
Find the title in the PlayStation Store or Game Library and download it if your plan includes it. Sony’s console guide to the Game Catalog explains how to browse and download eligible games on PS5 and PS4. Starting early gives you time for the download, installation, and any updates; downloading does not preserve access after the game leaves the catalog.
Premium members may be able to stream select games on supported devices instead of waiting for a full download. Confirm that the specific game offers streaming in your region before relying on it. Sony lists a minimum internet speed of 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming; these are connection requirements, not estimates of how quickly you can finish a game (Sony’s cloud-streaming requirements). Streaming also does not extend the title’s catalog deadline.

Set a completion goal that fits the time left
“Finish” can mean reaching the ending, seeing a particular ending, completing the main story, or earning every achievement and optional collectible. Pick the goal that matters to you before estimating the time. If the deadline is close, prioritize story-required objectives and defer optional quests, collectibles, and multiplayer grinds unless they are part of your goal.
There is no useful universal hours estimate for an unnamed game. Check the game’s own chapter or mission list, identify what remains from your current save, and consult a current completion-time reference for that specific title. Divide the remaining required work among the play sessions you can actually fit before the removal date. Leave spare time for difficult sections, updates, and reaching a sensible save or exit point. These are planning steps, not a guarantee that any particular title can be completed in time.

Choose download, streaming, or a separate purchase

Know what happens to saves and add-ons
Sony says DLC and add-ons associated with a catalog game also become inaccessible if the base game leaves the service or your membership ends. They may become usable again if you resubscribe or purchase the game, subject to the title’s availability and terms (Sony’s PlayStation Plus FAQ). If you are considering a separate purchase to continue later, check save compatibility for that specific game and edition rather than assuming it will carry over.
