In Jira Cloud, secure automation data by limiting who can edit rules, hiding sensitive values in web requests, and keeping personal or confidential data out of audit-log diagnostics. To clean up, use the Delete attachments action for attachments selected by filename; check other Jira records and external systems separately, because the documented actions do not provide one universal purge.
Where Jira automation data can go
Start by reviewing each rule’s actions and destinations. Data may remain in Jira, appear in an audit log, or be sent to an external service. A rule that changes issue or user data also has a different cleanup target from one that uploads or sends information elsewhere.

- Inside Jira: Check actions that write to issues, comments, attachments, or entity properties.
- Outside Jira: Review each Send web request destination and the payload it sends. Atlassian warns that this action can transmit sensitive data to third parties. Its recommendation is to let only trusted people edit automation flows, since an editor can change what the rule sends. See Jira automation actions.
- In diagnostics: The Log action and flow debugging can put evaluated values in the audit log. Review these outputs as potential disclosures, not as private scratch space. See Debug an automation flow.
Smart values can refer to personal information, including accountId, displayName, and emailAddress when profile information is accessible. Keep transmitted and logged values to the minimum needed. Atlassian documents that smart values use Mustache and that this prevents arbitrary code execution; that specific behavior does not make every rule action or outbound request inherently safe. See Automation smart values – users and Formatting smart values in Jira automation.
How to hide a secret in a web request
- Open the automation rule and edit its Send web request action.
- Enter the sensitive value in the relevant field and use the action’s Hide control before saving.
- After saving, confirm that the value is represented by asterisks. A hidden value cannot be inspected or unhidden, but someone editing the flow can still change it.
- Re-enter hidden values after duplicating the entire flow, exporting and importing it, or duplicating the web-request step. Atlassian says these operations discard hidden values.
Hiding a value limits its visibility in the editor; it does not remove the need to restrict rule editing or review the request destination and payload. The behavior and caveats are documented in Jira automation actions.

Can Jira automation data appear in the audit log?
Yes. The Log action records values in the audit log, and debugging prints evaluated smart values there. A value that looks harmless before substitution may therefore reveal personal or confidential information once evaluated. Avoid logging raw sensitive smart values; for troubleshooting, use only the minimum safe diagnostic and remove temporary Log or debug output when finished. See Debug an automation flow and What are smart values?.
Atlassian’s administration documentation states that automation audit logs are stored for 90 days and record the trigger date, rule, status, duration, and actions. That retention statement is from the cited administration page; confirm that it applies to your deployment and plan. It is not evidence that every destination touched by a rule is retained or deleted on the same schedule. See Manage automation rules in Atlassian Administration.

How to delete attachments with a Jira automation rule
Jira automation provides a Delete attachments action that selects attachments by applying regular-expression matches to attachment filenames. It is a targeted attachment action, not a general data purge.
- Identify the filename pattern for the attachments you intend to remove.
- Configure Delete attachments with a regular expression that matches that pattern.
- Carefully inspect the intended match scope before relying on the rule. A broad expression can match more filenames than expected.
- After the rule runs, verify the relevant issue attachments in Jira.
The action’s documented matching behavior is described in Jira automation actions. The documentation does not establish that this action deletes comments, fields, entity properties, copies held by an external service, or every other kind of data a rule may affect. Check and clean up each relevant record or destination separately, then verify the result in that system.

A practical review and cleanup checklist
- Inventory each rule’s trigger, actor and editing permissions, actions, smart values, diagnostics, and data destinations.
- Restrict flow editing to people trusted to change destinations and payloads.
- Hide secrets in web-request actions, and account for the duplication and export/import cases that discard hidden values.
- Remove or narrow Log and debug output that could disclose evaluated personal or confidential data.
- For attachment removal, use a deliberately scoped filename regular expression and verify the resulting attachments.
- Separately inspect other Jira records and external destinations affected by the rule; confirm cleanup in each relevant product or system.
- Review audit history for execution details, bearing in mind the 90-day retention stated in Atlassian’s administration documentation and its applicability to your site and plan.
The cited guidance covers Jira Cloud. It does not establish that the same controls or interface apply to Jira Data Center; use edition-specific documentation before following these steps on Data Center.
