Registered Michigan voters can request an absentee ballot online, by submitting a paper application to their city or township clerk, or in person at the clerk’s office. You do not need to give a reason. Start at Michigan.gov/Vote to apply, find your clerk, and check application or ballot status.
Choose how to apply
The Michigan Department of State says all registered voters in Michigan may vote by mail using an absentee ballot delivered to their home. The three application routes differ mainly in how you submit the request and how much time you need for it to reach the clerk.

| Route | How to submit | Timing to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Online | Apply through Michigan.gov/Vote; provide the requested identity and contact details and an uploaded signature or permission to use a signature on file. | The state advises applying at least 15 days before Election Day. The online application deadline listed by the state is 5 p.m. Friday before Election Day. |
| Paper application by mail | Download the official application or get one from your clerk, complete and sign it, and send it to the city or township clerk. | The state advises mailing it at least 15 days before Election Day. The clerk must receive it by 5 p.m. Friday before Election Day; a Friday postmark is not enough. |
| In person | Visit your city or township clerk’s office to request and submit an application. | You avoid mailing the application, but must follow the clerk’s office hours and the applicable election deadline. State pages give different late-request cutoffs, so confirm with your clerk. |
Apply early and verify the deadline
Michigan’s guidance recommends applying roughly two weeks ahead so there is time to process the application, deliver the ballot, and return the completed ballot. Its absentee voting page specifies at least 15 days for online or mailed applications; its elections FAQ advises applying no later than two weeks before the election.
For online applications, the absentee voting page gives a cutoff of 5 p.m. Friday before Election Day. Mailed applications must be received by the clerk by that same time. In-person guidance conflicts: the absentee voting page says a voter registered at their current address may apply in person until 4 p.m. the day before Election Day, while the FAQ says in-person requests are accepted through 4 p.m. Monday before Election Day. If you are applying close to the election, check the current election instructions and call your local clerk rather than relying on a general cutoff.

Submit an online application
- Go to Michigan.gov/Vote and open the absentee ballot application for the current election.
- Enter the identifying, address, and contact information requested by the portal. The state lists full name, date of birth, Michigan driver’s license or state ID information (or the permitted alternative), the last four digits of your Social Security number, eye color, and mailing address among the required information.
- Provide an uploaded signature or authorize use of a digital signature on file, as the portal permits.
- Submit the application and use the state portal to check whether it was received and whether your ballot has been mailed.
Use the current portal’s fields and instructions; do not assume an older saved form reflects the current application process.
Submit a paper application
- Download the official absent voter application from Michigan.gov/Vote or obtain one from your local clerk. The state provides official application forms and language options through its voter information page.
- Complete the requested information, including your full name, year of birth, address and mailing address, and sign it so the signature matches your voter record.
- Send or deliver the application to the city or township clerk. For a mailed application, allow enough time for delivery: the clerk must receive it by 5 p.m. Friday before Election Day.
Use Michigan.gov/Vote to find the correct clerk. If you are unsure how to submit the form or whether it arrived, contact that clerk.
Request in person at your clerk’s office
Go to the city or township clerk’s office, where you can request, complete, and submit the application. Bring the identifying and address information needed for the form and be prepared to sign it. Check the clerk’s office hours and confirm the deadline for the current election, especially if applying shortly before Election Day: the state’s absentee voting page and FAQ do not give the same in-person cutoff.
Check application and ballot status
Use Michigan.gov/Vote to find your clerk and track whether your application was received and your ballot mailed. Application deadlines are not ballot-return deadlines. The state’s absentee voting instructions generally require a completed ballot to reach the clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day; military and overseas voters have different handling rules. Follow the instructions that come with your ballot and verify the applicable return deadline with your clerk.

Accessible ballots, military and overseas voters, and emergencies
Voters with print disabilities
Michigan offers an accessible electronic absent voter ballot for eligible voters with print disabilities. It can be marked electronically using assistive technology, then printed and returned to the clerk by an allowed method. Find the current application and instructions through Michigan.gov/Vote or your local clerk; the state also explains accessibility and accommodations.
Military and overseas voters
Registered military and overseas voters may use a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) or Michigan’s absent voter application and send it to their local clerk. The state advises overseas voters to submit by email or fax where possible to avoid postal delays. These voters have distinct procedures and deadlines; consult the state’s military and overseas voting instructions and your clerk.
Unexpected emergencies
If a sudden circumstance makes it impossible to apply for a regular ballot in time, Michigan describes an emergency absentee ballot request in writing to the local clerk by 4 p.m. on Election Day. Examples include sudden illness, a death in the family, or arrest. Eligibility depends on when the emergency occurred, so contact your clerk immediately and follow the state’s Election Day emergency absentee ballot instructions.
