First identify whether Steam cannot download or install the game, or whether the game is installed but will not start. Restart Steam and your computer, then follow the matching steps below; the exact error message can point to a faster fix.
If the game won’t download or install
Restart Steam, then clear the download cache
- Exit Steam completely and reopen it. Restart your computer as well, then try the download or install again.
- In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache. Steam will ask you to sign in again afterward. Clearing this cache does not remove games that are already installed. See Steam’s instructions for clearing the download cache.
Repair the library and check the drive
If downloads or updates still fail, open Steam > Settings > Storage, select the library drive, and use Steam’s option to repair the library folder. Check that the drive is connected and that Steam can write to the library. If possible, try another library drive as a diagnostic; Steam includes library and installation checks in its Update & Installation Issues guidance.

If the library is on an external drive that disconnects or is not consistently recognized, that connection may explain the problem. Steam does not recommend external drives for game libraries because they can disconnect at an inopportune time. An internal drive is relevant only if the external drive is implicated; replacing storage is not a general fix for Steam download errors. See Steam’s guidance on games appearing as uninstalled.

Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and choose a different, relatively nearby region under Download Region. Retry the download. A region’s content server may be slow or overloaded, so a nearby alternative is a useful test—not a guarantee that the problem is local to Steam. Steam lists region changes among the steps for “Steam Servers Are Currently Unavailable or Too Busy.”

Check network, security software, and disk-monitoring apps
If the failure continues, test whether the issue changes on another network, and check for router or modem problems. Firewalls, antivirus programs, system or driver updates, and apps that monitor or modify disk or network activity can also interfere with downloads. Review Steam’s installation troubleshooting and firewall guidance. Prefer correcting Steam’s allow-list or executable permissions over disabling protection. If a brief firewall-off test is necessary to diagnose a rule, turn the firewall back on immediately and fix the rule; Steam does not recommend leaving it disabled.
If the game is installed but won’t launch
Verify the game’s files
- In your Steam Library, right-click the game and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then try launching the game again.
Steam says verification can take several minutes. Some files that fail verification may be local configuration files, which can be normal. Follow Steam’s file-verification instructions.
Check compatibility and background apps
Install available operating-system and hardware-driver updates, and temporarily close non-essential background applications to see whether one is interfering. Compare your computer with the system requirements listed for that specific game; meeting Steam’s general requirements does not establish that a particular title will run on your device.

Check that the game supports your operating system. On Linux, confirm Linux support or consult the game’s Steam Play/Proton community guidance if you are trying to run a Windows game through Proton. Steam’s launch troubleshooting guide includes separate advice for Windows, Linux, and macOS. If general checks do not resolve a title-specific problem, contact the game’s developer.

Fixes for specific Steam error messages
“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
Check your antivirus quarantine or history first: the game file may have been detected and quarantined. If it was not, the file may be corrupted or the download may have failed. Restart Steam and the computer, then verify the game’s files using the steps above. If the error remains, submit a Steam Support ticket with an uncropped screenshot of the error and the system details Steam requests. See Steam’s Missing Executable help page.
“This game is currently unavailable”
Verify the game’s files. For a third-party game, Steam suggests trying the game executable—or another launcher executable—in the installation folder to reveal a more specific error. A secondary installer bundled with the game may also have been canceled or blocked, preventing launch. See Steam’s troubleshooting for “This game is currently unavailable.”

“Failed to start game (app already running)”
The game may have hung or crashed without closing its process. On Windows, open Task Manager, find the game’s stuck process, end it, and try again. If you cannot find or close it, restart the computer. If you participate in the Steam client beta, test whether the issue also occurs outside the beta. Steam explains these steps on its “app already running” help page.

Try the nearby-region change described above, then check whether another network produces a different result. If the problem appears tied to firewall or antivirus settings, restore protection after any brief diagnostic test and correct Steam’s permissions rather than leaving security disabled. Steam’s pages on server availability and firewall configuration cover these checks.

When to contact support
If the relevant steps do not help, use Steam Support for persistent Steam, download, or missing-file errors. For a game that remains unable to launch after file verification and compatibility checks, contact the game’s developer; it may need title-specific troubleshooting.
