Choose a Breville espresso machine if you mainly want espresso, lattes, or cappuccinos; choose an automatic drip coffee maker if you want filter coffee brewed in a batch with minimal preparation. “Automatic coffee maker” can mean either a drip/filter brewer or an espresso machine that automates drink preparation, so the right comparison depends on which kind of coffee you want and how much work you want to do.

First, decide what “automatic coffee maker” means
Breville sells both espresso machines and drip/filter coffee makers. Its espresso range includes manual and automatic models; its filter brewers make coffee by brewing water through grounds into a serving vessel. If by “automatic” you mean a one-touch espresso drink, compare espresso machines with other espresso machines—not just with drip brewers.

- Automatic drip/filter brewer: typically add water and ground coffee, select a brew setting, and let the machine make a batch.
- Automated espresso machine: automates some espresso preparation steps, with the exact steps depending on the model.
- More hands-on espresso machine: may include a grinder but still require you to prepare espresso and texture milk yourself.
Breville describes these as distinct product categories on its espresso machine range and coffee range pages.

Breville espresso machines: how much do you want to do yourself?
Breville’s examples show why “espresso machine” does not automatically mean fully manual—or fully automatic. The Barista Express includes grinding but leaves milk texturing to you; the Oracle Jet automates more of the preparation.

Barista Express (BES870): integrated grinder, manual milk texturing
Breville’s US comparison page lists an integrated steel conical burr grinder with 16 grind settings, a 54 mm portafilter, a 67 oz water tank, and a one-year limited warranty. It lists manual milk texturing, making this a more hands-on espresso option rather than a fully automatic machine.

Oracle Jet (BES985): more preparation and milk work automated
Breville says the US Oracle Jet automates grinding, dosing, and tamping into a 58 mm portafilter, and offers hands-free Auto MilQ milk texturing. Its US pages also list a touchscreen, 45 grinder settings, and a two-year warranty. These features make it the more relevant example if your priority is reducing hands-on espresso preparation.

Drip coffee: what the Precision Brewer example tells you
The Precision Brewer Thermal (BDC455) illustrates Breville’s automatic filter-brewing category, but Breville’s US page marks this model as discontinued. It is useful as an example of features to compare—not as a current buying recommendation.

Breville lists a 60 oz capacity, two filter-basket shapes, adjustable temperature and brew time, flow-rate control, and Gold, Fast, Strong, Iced, Cold Brew, and customizable My Brew modes. The page does not establish a specific current successor with equivalent verified specifications. Breville’s coffee range page lists a newer Luxe Brewer range, but the information here does not establish its exact current models or specifications. A model-specific brewing detail
The Precision Brewer Thermal instruction manual says its Gold setting met SCA technical requirements when using the cone filter basket at 1.0 L and 1.2 L brew volumes, with a brew ratio of 55 g of coffee to 1.0 L of water. That statement applies to the manual’s specified machine, setting, basket, and volumes; it should not be generalized to every drip brewer. See the Precision Brewer Thermal instruction manual.
How to choose before you buy
- Start with your usual drink. Pick espresso if your routine depends on espresso or espresso-based drinks; pick drip/filter if you want brewed coffee in a batch.
- Count the steps you are willing to handle. For espresso, check whether grinding, dosing, tamping, and milk texturing are manual or automated on the exact model. For drip, compare the controls, batch capacity, and brew modes you will actually use.
- Check the serving size and counter fit. Compare the brewer’s capacity with how much coffee you make at once, and verify dimensions against your available space.
- Confirm the exact regional model and ownership details. Check current price and stock, voltage and power requirements, warranty, maintenance needs, and included accessories. Specifications and warranty terms can differ by model and market.
- For a discontinued brewer, verify any alternative independently. Do not assume a newer product is a direct successor; confirm its availability, basket compatibility, capacity, and features on its current product page.
Manufacturer specifications help establish what a machine offers, but they do not establish which method tastes better, which is more reliable, or which costs less over its lifetime. Those questions require evidence beyond the product features listed here.
