How to Reproduce Linux Test Failures Locally with WSL or a Container

Use WSL or a local Docker environment to rerun a Linux CI test on Windows. Match the command and configuration, then investigate filesystem and environment differences.

To reproduce a Linux-only test failure on Windows, run the same failing test command inside a local Linux environment. Use a WSL distribution when you need Linux shell tools and a Linux filesystem; use a container when the CI job’s image or Dockerfile is central to the failure. Neither option guarantees an exact copy of every CI host, so match the pipeline’s relevant settings and compare results.

Capture the CI conditions before changing anything

Start with the failing job, not a substitute command. Note the exact test command, its working directory, runtime or SDK version, Linux distribution or container image, and relevant environment variables. The selected Microsoft and Docker documentation describes local test environments, but does not establish a universal command for capturing all CI details; collect them from the pipeline configuration and logs.

Run the same command with the same project configuration locally where possible. A passing Windows-native run does not show that the test will pass on Linux: operating-system and filesystem behavior can differ.

Choose WSL or a container

Consideration WSL distribution Local Docker test environment
What it provides A local Linux distribution and Linux command-line tools. Microsoft describes WSL as a local development and test loop. A test environment defined by a selected image or Dockerfile. Visual Studio documents configuring test environments with WSL and Docker.
A practical fit Use it when the failure may depend on Linux shell tools or the local Linux distribution. Use it when the CI image or Dockerfile is an important part of the environment you need to reproduce.
Filesystem consideration Files in the Linux filesystem and files accessed through a mounted Windows drive can behave differently. Microsoft explains working across WSL file systems. For Docker Desktop with WSL 2, Docker recommends keeping bind-mounted source files in the WSL Linux filesystem where practical for better performance and Linux inotify file-change events. See Docker’s WSL 2 best practices.

Reproduce the failure step by step

  1. Choose the environment based on the failure. Start a WSL distribution for a Linux shell and local Linux tools. Choose Docker when a CI image or Dockerfile is the key part of the setup to match.
  2. Put the repository in an appropriate location. For Docker Desktop bind mounts with WSL 2, keep source files in the WSL Linux filesystem when practical. Linux-root files and Windows-mounted drives do not necessarily have identical behavior; see Microsoft’s file-system guidance.
  3. Recreate the project environment. Use the runtime or SDK version, dependencies, project configuration, and Linux distribution or container image recorded from CI, to the extent your local setup allows.
  4. Run the original test command. Run it from the same working directory and preserve relevant environment variables. Record whether the failure reproduces and the environment used.
  5. If results differ, vary one environmental factor at a time. First check case-sensitive paths, then compare other settings against the actual pipeline. Changing several things together can make it harder to identify what affected the result.

Check case-sensitive filenames and paths

Linux distinguishes filenames by case. A reference such as Tests/Parser.test may not resolve to a file named tests/parser.test on Linux, even if it works on a typical case-insensitive Windows filesystem. Check the exact capitalization in imports, scripts, configuration files, and test paths. Microsoft documents case sensitivity in WSL and differences between file systems in its cross-filesystem guidance.

Also check where the repository is stored. A project under the WSL Linux filesystem is not the same filesystem situation as a project reached through a mounted Windows drive. For Docker Desktop bind mounts under WSL 2, Docker specifically recommends Linux-filesystem source locations for performance and inotify behavior; that recommendation does not mean every filesystem-related test failure has the same cause.

Check Docker Desktop’s WSL requirements

Docker’s WSL 2 best-practices page states that WSL version 2.1.5 is the minimum for Docker Desktop to work as expected. Treat this as a version-specific vendor requirement, not a guarantee that every later setup matches your CI host; consult the current Docker guidance before troubleshooting an installation.

When a local run still differs from CI

WSL and a local container can narrow down Linux-specific problems, but the cited documentation does not establish that either reproduces every CI host exactly. Compare the pipeline’s actual settings when the failure points beyond path casing or file placement, including architecture, locale, kernel features, time zone, dependency resolution, permissions, network policy, and CI service configuration. These are factors to investigate against the specific pipeline, not a universal checklist of causes.
