You can reduce the risk of exposing code, credentials, or customer data by using an approved tool and account, sharing only the minimum context needed, and restricting what an agent can access or do. Before sending sensitive material, verify the exact product, plan, feature, and route: consumer chat, IDE completion, a coding agent, an API, and third-party integrations can have different data practices and controls. No single setting makes disclosure impossible.
Start by classifying the material
Before opening a chat or invoking an agent, check what the task would expose. Your organization’s policy may treat any of the following as restricted:
- API keys, passwords, tokens, private keys, and other credentials.
- Personal information, customer records, support conversations, or production logs.
- Regulated data, unreleased product details, or proprietary code.
If the material is sensitive, do not assume it is safe to share because the tool is inside an IDE or because the provider offers a business plan. Ask the security or privacy owner which service and configuration are approved for that data category.
Check the exact tool, account, and route
Training and retention are different questions. A provider may not use content to train models by default while still retaining prompts, feedback, logs, or application state for other purposes. Check the terms and settings for the specific account and feature you will use, including safety-review and legal exceptions, data residency, and integrations.

GitHub Copilot
GitHub says prompts, suggestions, and code snippets from individual Copilot subscribers may be used to train and improve models, and that individual users can opt out. For Copilot Business and Enterprise IDE chat and completion, GitHub says prompts and suggestions are not retained by default; user engagement data is kept for two years, and feedback data is retained as needed for its purpose. These are separate data categories, so “not retained” does not mean no related data is stored. Confirm the current setting and feature in use on GitHub’s Copilot page.
OpenAI business services, API, and Codex
OpenAI says inputs and outputs from ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Edu, ChatGPT for Healthcare, ChatGPT for Teachers, and the API platform are not used for training by default. Its business data page also describes retention controls, data residency, access management, and organization roles. These commitments apply to the listed services; do not automatically extend them to consumer products or another tool route.
For the API, zero data retention (ZDR) and Modified Abuse Monitoring require approval and have limits. ZDR changes behavior for particular endpoints, while ineligible endpoints or capabilities may still store application state; safety-related retention exceptions also apply. Before relying on ZDR, verify endpoint eligibility, project configuration, application-state handling, and exceptions in the API data controls documentation.

OpenAI’s account of its Codex deployment describes sandboxing, approvals, network access policies, identity and credentials, and agent-aware telemetry. It says CLI and MCP OAuth credentials are stored in a secure OS keyring and Codex activity can be available in enterprise compliance logs. This describes controls in OpenAI’s internal deployment, not a guarantee that every user’s local Codex setup has those controls enabled. See OpenAI’s Codex safety account.

Anthropic Claude and Claude Code
Anthropic’s consumer privacy article, dated March 16, 2026, covers Claude Free, Pro, and Max, including accounts using Claude Code on those plans. It says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models if a user opts in, if conversations are flagged for safety review, or through another explicit opt-in. Incognito chats are not used for model improvement. These statements are specific to the covered consumer plans; they do not establish the terms for Claude for Work or the Anthropic API. A separate Anthropic article describes 30-day deletion after a change for specified covered models and ZDR arrangements, including Claude Code with ZDR in Claude Enterprise and certain cloud-provider routes. It notes rare safety flags and legal retention. Do not treat that period as a universal Claude retention promise; check whether your model and route are covered in Anthropic’s covered-model retention terms.

Share the smallest useful example
Even with an approved service, reduce the amount of sensitive context you send. A narrow, representative example is often enough to explain a bug or request a code change.
- Replace real credentials and identifiers with local placeholders; never paste a live secret into a prompt.
- Use synthetic customer records rather than real names, account details, or production data.
- Include only the relevant function, error message, or configuration excerpt instead of uploading a repository or complete log when it is unnecessary.
- Remove unrelated comments, environment details, and internal URLs that do not help solve the task.
These are risk-reduction practices, not a guarantee that content cannot be retained or exposed. Follow your organization’s policy where it is stricter.

An agent may have access to files, tools, network services, or permissions beyond the text you provide. Review its effective access before granting it a task, especially when it can edit files, run commands, contact external services, or use MCP servers.

GitHub says enterprise administrators can use its AI Controls view to manage agent availability, inspect recent agent sessions, and find audit events. Administrators can also control whether MCP servers are allowed and which external tools are available through approved registries. Third-party agents such as Claude and Codex have separately managed policies, while local VS Code agents are not managed through GitHub. Details are in GitHub’s enterprise agent-management documentation.
Use the controls available in your approved environment to limit repository scope and tools, restrict network access where possible, and require human approval before external actions, privileged operations, or security-sensitive changes. Verify how the agent is authenticated and where its credentials are stored. Do not assume that an IDE extension, local agent, MCP server, or cloud agent inherits the protections of another product or account.

- Run relevant tests and check error handling.
- Review authorization and access-control logic, secret handling, and any new dependencies.
- Look for unexpected network requests, file access, or other outbound actions.
- Confirm the change matches the task and does not introduce unrelated edits.
Keep a record of the approved setup
For team use, document the approved plans and routes, relevant retention and training settings, agent and tool permissions, and how activity is audited. Recheck that record when the vendor changes a feature or when the team adds a new extension, agent, model route, or MCP server. A setting documented for one workflow may not cover another.
There is no universal safest-tool ranking: the available commitments differ by account type, product feature, endpoint, and integration. Make the decision against your organization’s requirements, and have its security or privacy owner review highly sensitive use cases.
