If someone is in immediate danger—or violence, threats, or intimidation are happening at a polling place—call 911 or local police first. Once the immediate risk is addressed, report the incident to the relevant election office and, when appropriate, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) or FBI. For a non-emergency voting-rights complaint, contact the DOJ Civil Rights Division Voting Section at 1-800-253-3931 or use its online complaint route.

For current contact details and local rules, check the relevant official pages; USAGov’s voter-fraud page was last updated February 25, 2026, and the EAC contact page is dated December 23, 2025.
What may count as voter intimidation or election interference?
DOJ’s April 2024 guide says federal law prohibits intimidation, threats, and coercion during voter registration, ballot casting, and the counting or tallying of votes. It also covers attempts and protections for people who facilitate voting, including election officials and volunteers. Knowingly false information about the time, place, or manner of voting, sent to prevent people from properly casting ballots, can also be illegal.

The FBI gives examples such as threats of physical or financial harm aimed at making someone vote—or not vote—a particular way, and lies about an election’s time, date, or place intended to stop qualified voters from voting. It describes intentionally deceiving qualified voters to prevent them from voting as voter suppression and a federal crime.
Not every upsetting statement, disputed claim, or election disagreement is a federal crime. Some conduct may instead fall under state or local rules. DOJ’s guide is not comprehensive and does not impose legal obligations; it does not determine whether a particular incident breaks the law.

Record what happened without putting yourself at risk
When it is safe to do so, note the basic facts while they are fresh:

- What happened, and when and where it happened.
- Who was involved, if known.
- How the incident affected someone’s ability to access or participate in voting.
- Whether anyone witnessed it or whether it was reported to an authority.
Keep original messages and relevant screenshots, audio, or video if they already exist and can be retained safely. DOJ says such material may help the FBI assess suspected criminal activity, including material believed to be AI-generated. Do not confront a threatening person or put yourself in danger to capture evidence, and do not delay an emergency call to collect it.

A report alerts authorities to conduct for assessment; it is not a legal verdict. The applicable law and next steps depend on the facts and jurisdiction. DOJ’s election-threats page, updated May 5, 2025, directs people facing imminent danger to 911 or local police and lists FBI reporting channels for threats against election workers and suspected federal election crimes. Check official agency pages for current contact details, particularly near an election.
