José Urquidy has been a starter for most of his MLB career, but his major-league work in 2026 was primarily in relief. MLB lists one start and 11 relief appearances for him that season. He elected free agency on September 30, 2026, so he should not be described as part of a current MLB rotation; any next role remains uncertain.
Was José Urquidy a starter or a reliever?
Both descriptions fit different parts of his career. Urquidy built a starter-led MLB résumé: when Detroit announced his 2025 signing, MLB counted 70 starts in 79 career appearances through 2023. His current MLB profile lists 70 career starts among 86 total appearances.

His 2026 major-league usage was different. MLB’s profile records one start and 11 relief appearances that season. That is a limited one-season sample, but it clearly shows that clubs used him mostly out of the bullpen in the majors during 2026.

Philadelphia claimed Urquidy off waivers on September 17, 2026, and activated him the following day. The Phillies designated him for assignment on September 27; he elected free agency on September 30, according to his MLB player profile. As of that latest listed transaction, he was a free agent—not an active Phillies player or a confirmed member of another team.

Older affiliations do not establish his present club. MLB’s transaction history includes a February 2026 signing with Pittsburgh and subsequent moves involving Chicago and Philadelphia; the September free-agency election is the most recent status in the profile.
What can a team reasonably expect from him?
His experience leaves open more than one possible use, but no cited source reports a future club’s plan or a medical prognosis. A team could view his starting background as rotation depth, while his 2026 relief usage suggests he has also been used in a flexible bullpen role. Those are possibilities, not a reported assignment or guarantee that he will start again.

Starting background
At the time of Detroit’s March 2025 announcement, MLB reported a 27–16 record and 3.98 ERA over 405.0 innings through 2023, alongside the 70 starts in 79 appearances. Those figures describe his career through 2023, not his current totals.

Baseball Savant’s September 2026 game log shows a 4.95 ERA across four MLB appearances and 12⅓ innings. That short stretch provides recent context, but four appearances are too small a sample to settle what role he can sustain or to predict his next season.

How to read the mixed role record
- Career experience: predominantly starting, based on the career starts reported by MLB.
- 2026 MLB usage: predominantly relief, with 11 relief appearances and one start.
- Next assignment: unknown after his free-agency election; no source establishes a new club or role.
What pitches does Urquidy throw?
Leones del Escogido’s 2025–26 bulletin describes a five-pitch mix: a four-seam fastball, changeup, cutter, sinker, and occasional slider. The club gives approximate velocities of 92 mph, 85 mph, 87 mph, 93 mph, and 78 mph, respectively.
Those figures are the club bulletin’s descriptions for its 2025–26 timeframe, not verified 2026 MLB Statcast averages. They indicate a varied repertoire but should not be treated as a current major-league pitch-tracking report.

What is his postseason record?
The same Escogido bulletin says Urquidy recorded three scoreless innings, allowed one hit, and struck out four for Houston against Philadelphia in the 2022 World Series. It is a notable postseason line, but it does not by itself determine whether a team should use him as a starter or reliever now.
