If neither points to a clear choice, explore a short list, watch a few teams play and notice who you naturally want to root for. There is no required “right” team, and you can take your time before settling on one.
Start with the connections you already have
A local team can make game days easier to share, while following a family member or friend’s team gives you someone to talk football with. You might also feel a connection to a city where you grew up, went to school, or have spent meaningful time. These are practical ways to narrow your choices, not rules that determine which team you must support.

If several teams have a personal connection, keep them on your shortlist rather than choosing immediately. A connection is a useful starting point; whether you enjoy following the team is something you can discover by watching.
Check whether you can watch the team
Viewing access matters most when you are considering a team far from where you live. The NFL’s team schedules and viewing guide can personalize the schedule view using your location and available services, and lets you view team schedules. Check it for your own area and current services: provider availability and game coverage can change, and the guide is not a guarantee that one service carries every game.

Use access as a practical filter, not as a reason to assume you can never follow a distant team. First find out what is actually available to you, then decide whether that fits how you want to watch.
Build a shortlist around what interests you
If geography and viewing access do not settle the question, compare teams on a few personal dimensions. NFL.com’s fandom guide is organized by division and covers all 32 teams. NFL Support also links to official websites for every club. Use those pages to explore teams that catch your attention.
- City and identity: Does a team’s home city, name, colors or traditions appeal to you?
- History: If a franchise’s background matters to you, the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s NFL franchise histories are a place to learn about origins and moves. History can give a team meaning, but it does not establish how well that team will play now.
- People around you: Would following a friend’s or relative’s team make watching and talking about football more enjoyable?
- Immediate interest: Did a particular team, player or matchup make you curious enough to watch again?
There is no objective score for which team has the “best” history or identity. Choose the details that matter to you.

Watch before you commit
Pick a few games featuring teams on your shortlist. If two candidates play each other, that matchup can be especially useful: you can compare how you feel as the game unfolds. Notice which team you hope makes the next play, whose games you want to keep following, and whether watching feels enjoyable even when the result is uncertain.
You do not need to announce a permanent choice before you have seen enough to know what you like. New fans commonly ask which team to “root for” or “follow/support,” as a recurring question in the r/NFLNoobs community illustrates. Treat community suggestions as personal opinions, not as proof that one team suits every newcomer.

A team’s current success can be one reason to pay attention, but it is a shaky sole basis for a long-term connection: results and fortunes change. If you want a team to follow for years, weigh current interest alongside your personal connection, viewing access and enjoyment of watching it.

The league’s structure gives fans recurring matchups as well as changing opponents. The NFL has 32 clubs in two conferences, each divided into four divisions of four teams. Each club plays 17 regular-season games over 18 weeks, including six against divisional rivals—two games against each of the other three teams in its division, one at home and one away. Opponents rotate so each team faces every team in the other conference once every four years. See the NFL’s schedule explainer for the format. Those recurring rivalries and rotating matchups can give you plenty to explore; they do not predict which team will be successful in future seasons.

After you have explored and watched, choose the team you most look forward to following—or keep more than one team in mind while you are still learning the league. Once you have settled on a favorite, team gear is an optional way to show your support, not a prerequisite for being a fan.
