Report the exact Xbox item or in-game user-created asset through the report control attached to it, then describe the concrete harm—such as impersonation, a scam, harassment, privacy abuse, or misleading advertising. “AI-generated” is context, not a universal Xbox report category. Preserve a short, non-sensitive record of the item and its context, and mute or block the account while the report is reviewed.
Use this reporting sequence
The most reliable report identifies one item and one policy problem. A vague complaint about an entire game, or a report that only says “this is AI,” gives reviewers less to examine.

- Identify the exact item. Note whether it is a gamertag, player profile, direct message, image, video, voice activity, marketplace or game listing, or a player-created asset inside the game. Record the creator name, item title or identifier, game mode, and where you saw it.
- Choose the report control that owns the item. Use Xbox’s report option for a player, message, profile, image, video or other Xbox-hosted activity. For an asset made or shared inside a game, use that game’s in-product user-generated-content (UGC) report control when one is available.
- Select the category that describes the conduct. Pick the closest category for fraud or a scam, impersonation, harassment, hateful or abusive content, sexual or violent harm, privacy abuse, spam, misleading promotion, or another prohibited behavior. The category should match the reported object: Xbox warns that reporting a gamertag triggers a gamertag review, not a review of every message or image associated with that person.
- Explain the harm and the deception. State what the content claimed, why it is false or manipulative, who appears to be targeted, and how you know or suspect an AI system was involved. If the content imitates a real person, asks for money or credentials, or directs players to an unsafe site, say so plainly.
- Attach concise evidence when the interface permits it. Include the game and mode, creator or gamertag, approximate date and time in UTC, an item URL or in-game identifier, and a screenshot or short clip that preserves enough surrounding context. Remove unrelated names, addresses, payment details, private messages and other sensitive information.
- Protect yourself while the review is pending. Do not retaliate, quote-post, or redistribute the harmful material. Mute and block the account or creator if you need to stop further contact, then keep the report confirmation or case reference.
Xbox Community Standards (updated May 2024) encourage players who experience or witness inappropriate content or behavior to “mute, block, report the player(s) acting inappropriately, and file a complaint.” Those actions serve different purposes: mute and block reduce contact immediately; the report gives Xbox or the game operator an item to investigate.

AI can appear in a game, an attached service, a player’s message, or a user-created mod. Send the complaint through the channel that can actually inspect and remove the item.

Do not use a safety report simply because an image, dialogue line or texture was made with an AI tool. A standards report is for harmful, deceptive, abusive or otherwise prohibited conduct. A quality complaint belongs with the developer unless the output also creates a policy problem.
How to file an Xbox report without losing context
Start from the item, not a general complaint
Open the menu attached to the object or account and choose the report command. Depending on the Xbox surface, that control may be in a player card, a message’s action menu, a media viewer, a profile menu or another context menu. Labels and placement can change between console, PC, mobile app and web views, so select the command attached to the item you want reviewed rather than a general feedback form.
If a single conversation contains several violations, report the most consequential message or media item separately when the interface allows it. A report of a profile alone may not cause every associated message, image or video to be examined.
Describe the real-world risk
Use ordinary language and specific facts. A useful explanation answers four questions:
- What did the item say, show or do?
- Where did it appear, and which account or creator posted it?
- What makes it misleading, abusive, unsafe or otherwise prohibited?
- What evidence shows the context, timing or target?
For example, “This image uses a creator’s name and likeness to advertise a fake tournament entry fee; it appeared in the game’s public hub at approximately 21:30 UTC on 19 October” is more actionable than “AI scam.” If you only suspect automated generation, describe the observable behavior first and mark AI involvement as a possibility.
Select the narrowest matching category
Category choices differ by surface, but the principle is stable: match the category to the harm. Impersonation belongs with identity deception; a request for payment or credentials belongs with fraud or scam behavior; repeated unwanted contact belongs with harassment or spam; sexual or violent imagery should be described as such; and disclosure of someone’s personal information should be reported as privacy abuse. If more than one rule is implicated, explain the primary harm and mention the secondary one in the narrative rather than selecting an unrelated category.
Attach evidence safely
A screenshot should show enough surrounding interface to establish the game, account and item, while avoiding information that could expose you or another player. A short clip can be useful for voice activity, a sequence of messages or a moving in-game asset. Keep the original file if possible, but do not edit it in a way that removes timestamps or context. Never include passwords, payment numbers, private addresses or unrelated private conversations.

Approximate UTC time is useful when an item is transient. If the game provides an item ID, map code, listing number or share link, copy it exactly. If the item disappears before you can capture it, report the account or location and explain when and where it was visible.
Report common AI-related abuses by what they do
Impersonation and deepfake identity use
Report an account, voice clip, image or message that pretends to be a developer, streamer, friend, moderator or other identifiable person. State whose identity is being imitated, what the impersonator asked players to do, and whether the item uses a copied name, avatar, voice or likeness. If the account also solicits money, codes or login details, include that fact because it changes the risk from mere parody to possible fraud.
Scams and deceptive offers
AI-generated text or images may advertise nonexistent prizes, beta access, in-game currency, jobs or tournament entries. Identify the promise, the requested payment or credential, the destination to which players are sent, and whether the offer appeared in a public listing, direct message or game space. Do not click suspicious links to collect evidence, and do not send money or codes. A report should explain the deceptive action; the use of AI is supporting context.
Misleading game or marketplace content
A generated trailer, screenshot, item description or listing can be misleading if it claims features, ownership, availability or performance that the game does not provide. Capture the claim and the place where it was displayed. Distinguish a policy concern—such as deceptive advertising or impersonation—from a normal product-quality complaint. If the material is merely disappointing or inaccurate without a prohibited element, send feedback to the developer instead of filing a safety report.

Report the specific message, image, voice recording or player behavior that targets a person or protected group. Explain the repeated pattern if one exists, but include at least one concrete item for review. Mute and block can stop contact while the complaint is assessed. Do not answer with insults or repost the abusive material; doing so can create additional moderation issues and spread the harm.
Sexual or violent synthetic imagery
Use the category for sexual or violent harm when the content meets that description, especially if it depicts a real person without consent, targets a minor, threatens someone, or is used to intimidate. Preserve only the minimum evidence needed for review and avoid sharing the image elsewhere. If the material indicates an immediate threat to someone’s safety, use appropriate emergency or local law-enforcement channels as well as the platform report.
Privacy and personal-information abuse
Report generated or edited content that exposes a person’s address, phone number, private image, account details or other personal information. Tell the reviewer what information was exposed, whether it appears genuine, and where it was posted. Do not copy the personal information into your report narrative unless the form requires it; refer to the field or attach a redacted capture instead.

Copyright or ownership disputes
If an AI-generated asset copies protected art, a logo, a character or another creator’s work, use the game’s stated intellectual-property or rights-complaint process when one exists. Explain what original work is involved and what the allegedly infringing asset is. Do not misclassify a rights dispute as harassment or fraud unless those behaviors are also present.
When the content is player-created or supplied by a mod
Player-created material is often controlled by the game’s UGC system rather than by an Xbox profile menu. Microsoft GDK requirement XR-018 says games with UGC must provide an in-product report route and publish content guidelines. It also says third-party mod integrations should use a report or complaint API when available and show a disclaimer, dialog or visual indicator when content is not sourced from the developer.
Use the game’s own report workflow
Open the asset’s details, creator card or contextual menu and choose the report option supplied by the game. Select the rule that fits the asset, add its identifier and location, and include a screenshot that shows the creator and surrounding game state. If the game offers a separate report history or confirmation screen, retain that reference.
Recognize third-party content
A disclaimer or visual indicator may show that a map, model, dialogue pack or other material came from a mod service or external creator. Record that indicator in your evidence. If a complaint API is available, submit through it so the integration owner receives the same item identifier the game uses. You can also report an associated Xbox account through Xbox when the behavior involves messages, impersonation or other platform-hosted conduct.
If no report control is visible
Look in the asset’s details, creator profile, pause menu, help section or support page for the game’s UGC complaint path. Report the missing mechanism to the developer as a product or compliance issue and provide the asset’s identifier. Do not publish the harmful asset publicly to force attention; that increases its reach.

What happens after you submit
Xbox describes a combination of automated detection and human review. Its 2024 transparency report says it proactively scanned user-generated text, usernames, videos and images worldwide from 17 February through 31 December 2024. The published figures are platform-wide and do not predict the result or speed of an individual case.

Xbox says its progressive use of AI to categorize and identify harmful content is guided by Microsoft’s Responsible AI Standard. Auto Labeling classifies reported conversational text, while Image Pattern Matching helps identify known harmful content and emerging toxic imagery. These systems support human moderators, who handle more complex or nuanced harms; automation does not remove the need to choose the correct item and category.

Possible outcomes
A review may result in removal or restriction of the item, action against an account, no action when the evidence does not establish a violation, or a request for more information. Public materials do not promise an appeal for every content report or a fixed response time. If Xbox takes enforcement action against your own account or item, check the enforcement history and any linked case-review or appeal resource shown with that action.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Reporting “AI” instead of the violation
Problem: The report says only that an image or message was AI-generated.
Correction: Name the deception, harassment, privacy exposure, scam request or other rule concern. Add AI provenance only as context, whether it was disclosed or inferred.
Reporting the wrong object
Problem: You report a profile when the harmful material is a particular image, message or listing.
Correction: Open the item’s own report control and identify its creator, identifier and location. Report the profile as well only when the profile itself violates a rule.
Using a safety report for a quality complaint
Problem: Generated dialogue is repetitive, a texture looks poor, or a promised feature is disappointing, but there is no deception or prohibited behavior.
Correction: Send gameplay feedback to the developer. Use a standards report only when the content creates a concrete safety, deception, abuse, privacy or other policy issue.
Leaving out timing and context
Problem: A cropped screenshot cannot show where the item appeared or who posted it.
Correction: Add the game and mode, creator, approximate UTC time, item ID or link, and a short clip or wider capture when safe.
Retaliating or amplifying the content
Problem: You reply, repost the image or confront the account publicly.

Assuming a report guarantees removal
Problem: You expect an immediate response or a particular sanction.
Correction: Keep the confirmation, monitor any enforcement or case-review notice, and understand that the published statistics are aggregate figures rather than an individual promise.
Decision checklist before you press Submit
- Have you selected the exact message, media item, player, listing or UGC asset?
- Is the chosen category about the actual harm rather than the fact that AI may have been used?
- Did you name the creator or gamertag, game and mode, and item identifier or location?
- Did you include an approximate UTC date and time for a temporary or disappearing item?
- Does the evidence preserve context without exposing passwords, payment details or personal information?
- For player-created content, did you use the game’s UGC route or available mod complaint API?
- Have you muted or blocked the account instead of responding or reposting the material?
- Did you save the confirmation or case reference and check any enforcement-history or case-review link that appears?
The central rule is simple: report the item and the behavior that make it harmful. AI generation can help explain how misleading content was produced, but a precise, contextual report gives Xbox or the game operator the information needed to review the right object and apply the appropriate standard.
