If someone has posted or threatened to post an intimate deepfake of you, save identifying details if it is safe, report each post to the service hosting it, and choose a hash service based on how old you were when the image was made. You do not need to prove that an image is authentic to ask for help. Nonconsensual intimate imagery (NCII) includes intimate images shared without the depicted person’s consent, including synthetic or AI-generated images.
What to do first if a deepfake is posted or threatened
- Preserve useful details if it is safe. Record the page address, account or profile name, dates, and relevant messages. Screenshots of the page or threat may help. You do not need to download or forward the explicit image. If you would rather not handle documentation alone, ask someone you trust to help. RAINN says evidence can help platforms, law enforcement, and courts respond.
- Report the post to the service hosting it. Look for that service’s reporting option for intimate images, sexual exploitation, privacy, or nonconsensual nudity. RAINN maintains a directory of service-specific reporting routes. If the material appears in more than one place, report each location separately; a removal on one service does not remove other copies.
- Choose an appropriate hash service. The relevant distinction is your age when the image or video was made, not your age now. The options are described below.
- Get support if you want it. A trusted person or a specialist support organization can help with documentation and reporting. A threat can be serious even if no image has been posted yet.
Which hash service applies to the image?
Hash services create a digital fingerprint that participating platforms can use to identify matching material. They are different from reporting a specific post: a platform report targets a known location, while a hash may help participating services detect matching content.

A hash service cannot guarantee removal everywhere. Its reach is limited to participating platforms, matching works best for exact matches, and encrypted messaging may not be covered. An edited or AI-altered version may need a separate hash if you can safely access it. Take It Down also cautions that platforms may have limited ability to remove older posts. Do not seek out, download, or redistribute explicit material just to submit it to a service.

What to do if the person depicted was under 18
If the image was made when the depicted person was under 18, treat it as a child-safety matter even if that person is now an adult. RAINN notes that imagery made when a person was under 18 remains child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Do not circulate the image as evidence. NCMEC directs people to report suspected child sexual exploitation to its CyberTipline; NCMEC says reports it handles are made available to the appropriate law enforcement agency. You can also report the post to the hosting service and use Take It Down for eligible imagery.

What to do when someone threatens to post a deepfake
A threat is worth documenting and reporting even before an image appears online. Preserve the messages and account details if safe, then use the platform’s reporting route for sexual exploitation, harassment, privacy, or threats. RAINN notes that a platform may still be able to help when the issue is a threat rather than a removal request. Consider asking someone you trust or a specialist support organization to help you decide what to do next.
When can you escalate a platform’s failure to remove an image?
United States
The FTC says covered platforms must provide a way to request removal and remove a validly reported nonconsensual intimate image, along with known identical copies, within 48 hours. The FTC began enforcing the relevant TAKE IT DOWN Act provision on May 19, 2026. This is not a universal deadline for every website or country: it applies to covered U.S. platforms and valid requests. If a covered platform fails to comply, the FTC identifies TakeItDown.ftc.gov as the complaint route.

The UK Government’s Crime and Policing Act 2026 intimate image abuse factsheet describes platform measures that include accessible reporting routes, expedited complaints, and a 48-hour deadline for taking down content after a valid report. These are UK-specific measures. The factsheet alone does not establish the current implementation status, so check the UK Government’s current guidance before relying on a particular procedure or deadline.

What removal can—and cannot—achieve
- A platform report asks a service to act on a particular post or account; report separate copies on each service where you find them.
- A hash service may help participating platforms detect matching content, but it is not universal monitoring and cannot promise that every copy will disappear.
- A regulator complaint is an escalation route for a platform’s failure to meet applicable legal duties; it does not replace reporting the content to the service hosting it.
