What you can—and cannot—do to protect your photos
The FBI warns that people can use photos posted online, including pictures of family and friends, to create deepfakes and other AI-generated content. Its practical advice is to be thoughtful about what you share and who can see it. No reviewed official guidance establishes that cropping, blurring, lowering resolution, adding a watermark, or stripping metadata reliably prevents a face from being used in a deepfake. Do not rely on those changes as protection.
Reduce exposure before you post
Choose the audience deliberately
- Set your profile and each post to the audience you actually intend, rather than assuming a profile setting covers every image.
- Review older posts and public profile pictures; change access or remove images you no longer want publicly available.
- For family photos, consider whether everyone shown is comfortable with the post. Use tighter sharing controls, especially for children.
Share fewer clear face photos publicly
When a public post does not need a clear, high-resolution face image, consider sharing a different photo or not posting one. This is exposure reduction, not a guarantee: someone may already have copied an image, and restricting access cannot recall copies downloaded or reposted elsewhere.

Think before uploading to another service
Before giving an app or website a personal photo, consider whether you trust the service and understand how it handles uploads. Deleting a photo from one service does not delete copies that someone has already downloaded or shared elsewhere.
What to do if a deepfake appears
- Record the details. Where safe and lawful, save the post URL, account name, date, and screenshots. Avoid reposting the image to seek help; that can spread it further.
- Report the post and request removal. Use the platform’s reporting process. The FTC says reporting methods vary and may be available through a content menu or the platform’s help center. FTC guidance on the Take It Down Act and reporting
- For an adult’s nonconsensual intimate image, consider StopNCII. The free tool creates a digital fingerprint from the selected image and shares that fingerprint—not the image itself—with participating platforms, which can scan for matches. - If there is extortion or immediate danger, do not pay or send more images. The FTC advises against complying with extortion demands and recommends reporting the perpetrator to law enforcement. FTC guidance on nonconsensual intimate images
What U.S. removal protections cover
According to the FTC’s 2026 summary of the Take It Down Act, covered platforms must remove qualifying nonconsensual intimate images—including real, digitally altered, and AI-generated deepfake images—and known identical copies within 48 hours after receiving a valid request. The rule is not a general 48-hour takedown deadline for every altered photo, every platform, or every country. The law’s scope is limited to covered platforms and qualifying intimate imagery. Reporting and removal are different from verifying whether a suspicious clip is real. For unusual or out-of-character media, the FBI recommends checking trusted sources or official confirmations before accepting or sharing it. Provenance systems can provide information about a media file’s origin or edits, and watermarks can signal that content is synthetic or has been marked. NIST surveys provenance, watermarking, detection, and prevention as technical approaches to synthetic-content risks; its report does not establish that a consumer can make a shared photo immune to deepfakes. Ofcom describes provenance metadata as information about a content item’s history and origin, and discusses tools that inspect embedded C2PA metadata. Such information may help with attribution or interpretation when it is present and supported. It cannot stop copying or manipulation, and metadata may not travel with an image. NIST’s identity-proofing guidance addresses forged media used to defeat remote identity checks, not ordinary photo sharing. It says live document capture and presentation-attack detection offer some protection but are not sufficient for every case; it is not a recommendation for consumers to buy a particular camera or detection app. NIST SP 800-63A
