A report gives Meta a policy-based reason to review the material; it does not guarantee that every AI-generated or edited image will be deleted.
Facebook and Instagram use related Community Standards, but the controls, status tracking and appeal options differ. Labels, reduced distribution, fact-checking and removal are separate possible outcomes, and menu wording can vary by app version, device, account and country.

The fastest way to report an AI image
- Open the Facebook post, photo or reel, or the Instagram post, carousel or reel containing the image.
- Tap or click the three-dot menu. On some screens it is labelled More.
- Choose Report.
- Select the reason that describes the real problem: false or misleading information, impersonation, fraud, harassment, threats or another Community Standards concern.
- Use the description field to identify the false claim and the manipulation. Explain what the image appears to show, what is altered or untrue, and why it could cause harm.
- Add the post URL, account or Page username, date and time, caption, visible labels and a screenshot if the form offers those fields.
- Submit the report, then keep your own record of the material. Do not repost the image merely to document it; reposting can amplify the deception.
Meta’s support guidance shows the general path as opening the image or post, selecting More and then Report. Exact labels and the number of screens can change as Meta updates its apps.

What to collect before you submit
A reviewer must be able to locate the exact item and understand the claim quickly. Save the following privately before the account edits or deletes the post:

- The direct post URL, not only the profile URL.
- The account, Page or channel username and display name.
- The caption, comments that establish the claim and any date or location stated in the post.
- The date and time you saw it, including your time zone if the timing matters.
- A screenshot showing the image, caption, account name and any AI info or other warning label.
- A short description of the visual alteration: for example, a face swapped onto another person, a fabricated event scene, a synthetic quote card or an image edited to remove a crucial context.
- Reliable context that explains the deception, such as the original photograph, an official statement or a clearly documented mismatch between the image and the claimed event.
Do not download and redistribute a harmful image to prove that it exists. Send the original post’s link through the reporting form when possible. If the image depicts a private person, a minor, sexual material, a threat or another sensitive subject, avoid placing unnecessary personal details in public comments.
How to report on Facebook
Report the individual post or image
- Open Facebook and navigate to the post, photo or reel.
- Select the three dots at the top of the post. Depending on the interface, choose More first.
- Select Report post, Report photo or the closest Report option.
- Choose the policy reason. Select a false-information option when the central problem is a deceptive factual claim; choose impersonation, fraud, harassment or threats when one of those describes the harm more precisely.
- Complete the follow-up questions and provide the factual explanation. Include the post link and username if the form requests them.
- Submit the report and note the confirmation or report reference shown on screen.
If the image is part of a profile, Page, group or message, report the specific item first. Reporting the entire account may be appropriate for a repeated pattern, but it does not replace identifying the individual post that contains the misleading image.
Report an image shared in a group or Page
Use the same post-level menu. A group administrator may also have a separate group-report route, but an admin’s action is not the same as a Meta Community Standards review. If the post is dangerous, deceptive during an election or tied to an imminent threat, state that context plainly instead of relying on a bare “AI” description.

Facebook places report outcomes in Support Inbox. Open Help and support → Support Inbox → Reports about others to see decisions about content you reported. Meta says that, when offered, a reporter can select Request another review; its current guidance says a second review usually occurs within 24 hours. The timing is a stated typical period, not a guarantee.
How to report on Instagram
Report a post, carousel or reel
- Open the Instagram post, carousel or reel containing the image.
- Tap the three dots in the upper-right corner of the item.
- Tap Report.
- Select the reason that best matches the problem, then answer the follow-up questions.
- Describe the false claim and the alteration in concrete terms. Add the post link, username and other identifying information when the form allows it.
- Submit the report and keep a private screenshot and URL for your records.
Instagram’s Community Guidelines ask reporters to provide links, usernames and descriptions so the review team can find the material efficiently. A report that only says “this is AI” gives less information than one that says, for example, “The caption says this is a photograph of a real evacuation on 12 June, but the people and emergency vehicles are digitally generated; the image is being used to solicit donations.”

Report an account, story or direct-message image
For a repeated pattern, you can also report the account. For a Story, use the Story’s More menu while it is visible. For an image sent in a direct message, use the message or conversation reporting control. Preserve the relevant message context privately, but do not forward a suspected scam or manipulated image to additional people.
Choose the policy reason that matches the harm
AI generation by itself is not always the policy violation. Select the category that tells Meta why the content is harmful or deceptive:

If more than one category applies, choose the primary harm and mention the other relevant facts in the description. Avoid accusing an account of criminal conduct unless you can state the observable behavior accurately.
How to write a useful report description
Use a short, factual structure:
- Identify the item: “This post at [the form’s link field] claims that …” If the form itself supplies the link field, paste the real URL there rather than typing a substitute.
- Describe the alteration: “The image appears to combine a real background with a synthetic face,” or “The text and scene were digitally created and are presented as a live news photograph.”
- Explain the contradiction: “The event shown did not occur at the stated place and time,” or “The named person has not made this statement.”
- Explain the likely harm: “It is being used to solicit donations,” “it may incite hostility toward a group,” or “it could mislead voters before a scheduled election.”
- Point to supporting context: Include a relevant original source or official clarification only if the report form allows it and the material directly helps the reviewer verify the claim.
Do not write a long theory about which image generator was used unless that fact is central. Reviewers need the claim, the manipulation and the consequence more than speculation about the software.
What Meta may do after a report
Meta says its Community Standards apply across Facebook and Instagram. A report is reviewed against those standards, and content is removed when Meta finds a violation. That does not mean every manipulated image is deleted.

Meta’s policy position changed from a narrow focus on a subset of manipulated media to a broader approach that can keep content online while adding labels and context. In an April 5, 2024 announcement, Monika Bickert, Meta’s Vice President of Content Policy, wrote: “We agree with the Oversight Board’s recommendation that providing transparency and additional context is now the better way to address manipulated media and avoid the risk of unnecessarily restricting freedom of speech, so we’ll keep this content on our platforms so we can add labels and context.”

How AI labels work—and why an unlabeled image can still be fake
Meta says it adds an AI info label when its systems detect industry-standard AI signals or when a person discloses that the uploaded content was generated with AI. Meta announced industry-signal labelling on February 6, 2024, and described a broader AI-info approach on April 5, 2024.
The label system is not a universal authenticity test. Meta says its systems look for signals such as C2PA and IPTC information, but not every AI tool supplies those signals. People can also strip invisible markers by exporting, editing or recompressing a file. Consequently:
- An image with an AI label has useful provenance or disclosure context, but the label does not by itself identify every alteration or prove that the caption is true.
- An image without a label may still be AI-generated or manipulated.
- A label does not necessarily mean Meta will remove the image.
- When digitally created or altered media creates a particularly high risk of materially deceiving the public on a matter of importance, Meta says it may apply a more prominent label.
Report the deceptive claim even when the image has no AI label. The absence of a marker is a limitation of detection, not evidence that the image is authentic.
Independent fact-checking and the “Altered” rating
Meta says eligible AI-generated content can be reviewed by independent fact-checking partners. A partner rating of Altered covers “Faked, manipulated or transformed audio, video, or photos.” Meta says this rating leads to a label and reduced distribution in Feed.

Fact-checking is not identical to a user report and does not guarantee that every image will be assessed. It is one route through which content may receive context or reduced reach. Content that contributes to imminent violence or physical harm, or that interferes with voting, can face removal under policy rather than only a label or ranking reduction.

Request another review on Facebook
- Open Help and support.
- Select Support Inbox.
- Open Reports about others.
- Choose the relevant decision.
- Select Request another review if Meta offers that option.
Use the second review to add the missing factual point, not simply to repeat “this is fake.” Explain the exact claim, the harm and the evidence that the first review may have overlooked. Meta says a second review usually occurs within 24 hours, although individual cases can take longer.
Understand the Oversight Board route
After the required Meta review steps, some decisions can be appealed to the Oversight Board. Meta’s guidance says an appeal generally follows two reviews, must be filed within 15 days of the decision and may not be selected for review by the Board. The 15-day period is short, so save the decision date and the relevant post information as soon as the decision arrives.
An Oversight Board appeal is not available for every report or every type of content. It is a limited escalation process, not a guarantee that the image will be removed.

These differences are practical rather than absolute. Meta changes interface labels and eligibility by app version, device, account and country, so follow the control shown on your screen rather than an older screenshot.
Common mistakes that weaken a report
- Reporting only “AI”: Generation method is less useful than the false claim and the harm.
- Choosing the wrong category: A fraud report should identify the money request; a harassment report should identify the target and threatening conduct.
- Leaving out the exact post: A profile link may lead to dozens of items. Use the direct URL when available.
- Reposting the image: Publicly repeating a false image can increase its reach and strip away the original context.
- Assuming a label guarantees removal: Meta may label or down-rank content that remains online.
- Assuming no label proves authenticity: Detection signals can be missing or removed.
- Waiting to preserve evidence: Save the URL, caption and screenshot before the post changes.
- Sending passwords or unnecessary personal information: A legitimate Meta report does not require you to publish sensitive credentials in a comment.
When to report urgently
Use the ordinary report control immediately for ordinary misinformation, but make the danger explicit when the image is tied to a time-sensitive risk. State the location, deadline, named target, requested action and likely consequence if the post encourages violence, targets a person with a threat, impersonates an emergency service, solicits money after a disaster or attempts to interfere with voting.
If someone faces an immediate physical danger, contact local emergency services as well as the platform. A platform report is not an emergency-response channel and should not be the only action when a real-world threat is imminent.
What to expect—and what not to expect
Reporting gives Meta a structured opportunity to review a specific item under its rules. It does not establish the truth of the image, guarantee a response on a particular timetable or ensure removal. Meta’s stated approach is to remove content that violates its standards while often using labels, context and reduced distribution for manipulated media that does not meet a removal threshold.
The strongest report is therefore specific: identify the post, name the deceptive claim, describe the manipulation, connect it to a concrete harm and preserve the evidence privately. On Facebook, monitor Support Inbox and request another review when that option appears. If the decision remains eligible after the required reviews, the Oversight Board process has a 15-day appeal window.
