How to Report Cryptocurrency Remittances on Your Canadian Taxes

Short answer: Canada does not have a special tax category for a cryptocurrency “remittance.” The tax result depends on whether ownership changed. Moving coins between wallets you own generally is not a taxable disposition. Sending crypto to a family member, friend, charity or other person is a transfer of ownership and must be analyzed as a disposition. Record the asset’s fair market value in Canadian dollars at the transfer time, decide whether your activity is on capital or business account, and report the result on the corresponding CRA forms.

What makes a cryptocurrency remittance taxable?

The receiving wallet’s owner is the first question to answer. A blockchain transfer can look identical technically whether you are moving funds to yourself or paying another person, but Canadian tax treatment is different because the legal and beneficial ownership is different.

Moving crypto between wallets you own

CRA guidance gives transfers between wallets that you own as an example of a transaction that generally does not result in a taxable disposition. That includes moving bitcoin from an exchange account to your hardware wallet, consolidating balances into another self-custody address, or moving coins from one personal wallet to another. Keep the transaction record anyway: the move does not reset your adjusted cost base, and you must be able to show that both wallets belonged to you.

Sending crypto to another person

Sending bitcoin or another crypto-asset to a family member overseas changes ownership. For tax purposes, that is generally a disposition even if you call it a remittance, support payment or gift and even if no Canadian dollars pass through your bank account. CRA’s cited guidance does not create a blanket personal-remittance exemption.

The same ownership analysis applies when you send crypto to a friend, donate it, pay a contractor, settle a debt or transfer it to a business you do not own. The transfer may also be an exchange or payment, but it still requires a disposition calculation when you give up ownership of the crypto.

Classify the transfer before calculating anything

Use the facts of the transaction, not the label in your wallet app, to classify it. This table separates the most common cases.

Transaction Who owns the receiving wallet? Canadian tax analysis Likely reporting route
Exchange account to your personal wallet You Generally no disposition; preserve records and carry the same adjusted cost base No Schedule 3 entry solely for the transfer
One personal wallet to another personal wallet You Generally no disposition No Schedule 3 entry solely for the transfer
Crypto sent to a spouse, child or other relative Another person Disposition at the crypto’s Canadian-dollar fair market value at the time sent Schedule 3 if capital account; business forms if business account
Crypto donated to a charity Charity or its custodian Ownership transfer and disposition; any donation implications require separate review Schedule 3 or business route, plus applicable donation documentation
Crypto used to buy goods or services Merchant or service provider Disposition treated as a payment or exchange Schedule 3 or business route
Crypto exchanged for another crypto-asset Counterparty or exchange Disposition of the asset you gave up, even though you received crypto rather than cash Schedule 3 or business route
Crypto accepted by a GST/HST registrant for taxable goods or services Business supplier Separate GST/HST supply rules may apply to the supplier GST/HST return and income-tax route as applicable

If you cannot establish who controls the receiving address, pause the calculation and reconstruct the ownership trail from exchange statements, wallet exports and communications with the recipient. An address alone does not prove ownership.

Value the remittance in Canadian dollars

For a disposition, determine the crypto’s fair market value (FMV) at the date and time ownership changed. CRA generally accepts a reasonable valuation method, but you should apply that method consistently and retain evidence showing how you arrived at the Canadian-dollar amount.

What to capture at the transfer time

  • Asset and network, such as BTC on Bitcoin or ETH on Ethereum.
  • Exact units sent, including any network fee paid from the same transaction.
  • Date and time, with the time zone or UTC convention.
  • Canadian-dollar price used for the asset at that moment.
  • Source of the price, such as the exchange quotation or a documented market-data service.
  • Transaction fee and whether it was deducted from the amount delivered or paid separately.
  • Transaction ID, sending address and receiving address.

Use a price that reflects the asset and the time of the transaction. If the exchange reports a price in U.S. dollars, convert it to Canadian dollars using a supportable exchange rate for the same time. Save the underlying quote, conversion rate and calculation rather than relying on a later screenshot.

Handling fees and partial transfers

Separate the amount transferred from the network fee and any platform fee. A fee can affect proceeds and disposition costs, but the treatment depends on the facts and whether you are on capital or business account. Do not silently omit a fee or subtract it twice. For a transfer that spends only part of a wallet balance, identify which units and adjusted-cost-base lot were disposed of under the tracking method you use, and apply that method consistently.

Decide whether the disposition is capital or business income

After identifying a disposition and its CAD value, determine the character of the activity. CRA treats this as a facts-and-circumstances question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capital treatment

If your crypto activity is not a business, a disposition is generally on capital account. The basic calculation is:

Capital gain or loss = proceeds of disposition − adjusted cost base − reasonable disposition costs.

For a personal remittance, the proceeds are generally the crypto’s FMV in Canadian dollars when you transferred ownership. The adjusted cost base (ACB) is your recorded cost of the units disposed of, including amounts that belong in ACB under the method you use. A gain is reduced by eligible disposition costs; a loss is calculated the same way and is not turned into a gain merely because the recipient received less after fees.

CRA’s cited 2024 guidance states that one-half of a capital gain is reported as a taxable capital gain. Capital losses generally offset taxable capital gains. A net capital loss can generally be carried back three years or carried forward indefinitely under CRA guidance, subject to the applicable rules and filing requirements.

Business treatment

Your transactions may be business activity when your conduct shows regularity or continuity and an intention or capacity to make gains. CRA describes the analysis as fact-specific and notes that even one transaction can be an “adventure or concern in the nature of trade.” Frequency is relevant, but it is not the only factor.

  • Your knowledge, experience and organization of the activity.
  • Whether you use financing, specialized tools, advertising or a trading plan.
  • Whether you spend substantial time seeking short-term profits.
  • Your stated purpose and the objective pattern of your transactions.

Business treatment generally means reporting the full business profit or loss rather than applying the capital-gain inclusion approach. A business taxpayer must also consider whether other obligations, including GST/HST registration, apply to actual supplies of taxable goods or services.

Where to report a crypto remittance on your return

Capital-account remittance: T1 Schedule 3

For a capital disposition, use the crypto-asset category in T1 Schedule 3. Enter the transaction details required by the form, including proceeds, ACB and disposition costs, and carry the resulting capital gain or allowable capital loss to your T1 return as instructed. Keep the supporting worksheet even if your tax software imports a single net figure.

Do not enter a self-transfer merely because it appears as a blockchain transaction. A wallet-to-wallet move that you can substantiate as your own property generally has no disposition amount to report. If you accidentally reported such a move as a sale, correct the return and retain evidence of common ownership.

Business-account remittance: T4002 route

If the facts support business income, report the crypto result through the business-income forms and the T4002 route. Your records should show business revenue, the cost or ACB of crypto disposed of, fees and other allowable expenses, and how each transaction ties to the reported totals. Do not put a business disposition on Schedule 3 simply because the asset was held in a personal wallet.

Step-by-step workflow for a family remittance

  1. Identify the asset and transaction. Record the ticker, network, units, date, time, exchange or wallet, transaction ID and both addresses.
  2. Determine the receiving owner. Mark whether the destination wallet is yours, jointly controlled by you, or controlled by another person. A family member’s wallet is normally another person’s wallet even when you pay the family member’s expenses.
  3. Describe the legal and practical purpose. Note whether the transfer was a gift, support payment, debt settlement, purchase, donation or exchange. The description does not override ownership, but it helps explain the transaction.
  4. Establish CAD FMV. Use a reasonable price at the exact transfer time, document the source and currency conversion, and save the evidence.
  5. Match units to ACB. Determine the ACB of the units disposed of under your tracking records. Include the relevant costs and account for any earlier crypto transactions that changed the pool.
  6. Classify the activity. Apply the capital-versus-business factors to your overall conduct for the year, not just this one transfer.
  7. Calculate the result. For capital treatment, subtract ACB and eligible disposition costs from proceeds. For business treatment, calculate business revenue and expenses under the business method.
  8. File on the right route. Use the crypto-asset section of T1 Schedule 3 for a capital disposition or the T4002 business-income route for business activity.
  9. Reconcile the filing. Compare your return totals with exchange exports, wallet histories and your bank records. Investigate every unexplained difference before filing.

Worked examples

Example 1: transfer to your own cold wallet

You move 0.05 BTC from an exchange to a hardware wallet that you own. The exchange shows a network fee, and the hardware wallet receives slightly less than 0.05 BTC. Because ownership did not change, the move generally is not a disposition. Keep the exchange withdrawal record, transaction ID and fee, and carry the relevant ACB into your wallet records. Do not report the withdrawal as a sale on Schedule 3.

Example 2: bitcoin sent to a parent abroad

You send 0.02 BTC to your parent’s wallet. At the timestamp recorded by the transaction, the 0.02 BTC has a documented FMV of CAD 1,200. Your ACB for those units is CAD 700 and the attributable disposition cost is CAD 20.

Capital gain: CAD 1,200 − CAD 700 − CAD 20 = CAD 480. Under the cited CRA one-half inclusion rule, CAD 240 is the taxable capital gain reported through the Schedule 3 process. The transfer is still a disposition even though its purpose was family support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example 3: loss on a remittance

You transfer crypto with a CAD FMV of 900 to a sibling. The units’ ACB is CAD 1,100 and documented disposition costs are CAD 10. The capital loss is CAD 210. It is not a deduction against employment income merely because the transfer was personal; it is a capital loss subject to the capital-loss rules and limits.

Example 4: frequent profit-seeking activity

You trade several times each week, use automated alerts, maintain detailed short-term targets and regularly dispose of inventory to fund remittances. Even if one payment goes to a relative, the broader pattern may support business treatment. In that case, analyze the full activity as business income or loss and report through the T4002 route rather than treating each transfer as an isolated personal capital transaction.

Records to keep in case CRA asks

Blockchain data proves that a transaction occurred, but it does not by itself prove your tax basis, the recipient’s identity or the CAD value. Maintain an audit trail that connects on-chain events to your tax calculation.

  • Asset type, network and exact units sent.
  • Timestamp, time zone and transaction ID.
  • Sending and receiving wallet addresses.
  • Evidence that a self-transfer involved wallets you controlled, when applicable.
  • Counterparty description, such as “parent,” “charity” or “merchant,” without exposing unnecessary personal information.
  • Exchange statements and wallet exports showing balances before and after the transfer.
  • CAD FMV source, quoted price, conversion rate and valuation worksheet.
  • Adjusted-cost-base ledger, including acquisition dates, quantities, fees and prior dispositions.
  • Transaction, network and platform fees, with an explanation of how each was treated.
  • Copies of filed schedules, business worksheets and any reconciliation used to prepare the return.

Preserve records for the period required under Canadian tax rules and keep an accessible copy even if an exchange later changes its reporting interface. A CSV export plus a readable PDF statement is safer than a browser bookmark that may stop working.

GST/HST: a separate question from your income-tax disposition

GST/HST does not turn every personal remittance into a taxable supply. The relevant question is whether a registrant supplied taxable property or services for crypto.

For example, a GST/HST registrant accepting crypto as payment for taxable goods or services generally calculates the tax using the crypto’s FMV at the time of the exchange, then collects, files and remits as required. That supplier also has an income-tax transaction to analyze. By contrast, a personal support transfer to a family member is not described by CRA’s cited guidance as a taxable supply merely because it uses a blockchain.

If your remittance is connected to a commercial arrangement, separate the GST/HST analysis from the capital-versus-business income analysis. Keep invoices, registration details, the FMV calculation and the date the supply occurred.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Calling every transfer a non-taxable remittance

“Remittance” describes the purpose, not the tax result. Correct the classification by identifying the destination owner and calculating FMV when ownership changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reporting a self-transfer as a sale

A withdrawal from an exchange can be mistaken for a disposition. Match the destination address to your wallet inventory and document control of both addresses. If you already filed an incorrect sale, request a return adjustment with the supporting records.

Using the amount the recipient received as proceeds

The recipient’s net amount after a network fee may differ from the asset’s FMV at the transfer time. Record the gross units, fee and valuation separately so the proceeds and costs are not mixed.

Leaving the CAD conversion undocumented

A later price lookup may not represent the transfer-time FMV. Save the quote, exchange-rate source, timestamp and formula used. Apply the same reasonable method throughout the year unless you document why a change was necessary.

Assuming one transfer determines your status

Capital or business treatment is based on the pattern and purpose of your activity. Review the whole year’s conduct, including trading frequency, holding periods, organization and profit-seeking behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring an omitted prior year

CRA says omitted crypto income or gains can lead to tax, penalties and interest. You may request a return adjustment or, where eligible, use the Voluntary Disclosures Program. Gather the transaction ledger, valuation support and corrected calculation before submitting anything.

Questions to answer before filing

  • Did I control both wallets, or did another person receive ownership?
  • What was the asset’s CAD FMV at the exact transfer time, and can I prove the source?
  • What ACB belongs to the units sent?
  • Are my overall crypto activities capital or business in character?
  • Have I included fees once, in the appropriate place?
  • Does the transaction involve a taxable supply by a GST/HST registrant?
  • Can a third party reconcile my Schedule 3 or T4002 numbers to the transaction ID?

Answering those questions produces the file CRA would need to understand why a transfer was not reported, why it was reported on Schedule 3, or why it belongs in the business-income calculation.
