If someone has posted or used your ship-design artwork without permission, first preserve the original and capture the suspected copy as it appears online. Then submit a copyright report through the service provider’s official reporting form. Keep in mind that reporting an image, protecting a vessel hull design, and registering copyright are distinct processes under U.S. law.
What to document before you report a copied design
Build a clear, dated record before contacting the platform. Preserve evidence in its original form; use separate copies if you need to add notes or comparisons.

- Preserve your original. Keep untouched copies of the artwork and, if available, sketches, drafts, source files, dated exports, and records of earlier publication. If the work exists only on paper, digitize it while keeping the physical original safe. A clear scan can help preserve a record, but it does not by itself establish authorship or infringement.
- Capture the suspected copy in context. Save the full page address, the publicly displayed account or seller name, and the date and time you viewed it. Take a screenshot or save a copy if the service permits. Include enough surrounding page context to show where the material appeared, and leave the original capture unaltered.
- Make a separate comparison sheet. Label each work and note its creation or publication dates. Compare equivalent views and point out specific expressive details that appear in both. Keep the unmarked files and screenshots separate from annotated comparison copies.
- Keep a chronology. Record when you created or published the original, when and where you found the suspected copy, and what happened after you contacted the poster or platform. Save report confirmations, replies, and any counter-notice.
The U.S. Copyright Claims Board advises claimants to keep copies of works and related communications, organize facts chronologically or by work, and explain the critical facts. That is useful recordkeeping even if you never file a claim.

How to submit an online copyright report
Use the service provider’s current, official copyright reporting route. The U.S. Copyright Office describes the DMCA’s online notice-and-takedown framework; qualifying service providers designate agents to receive notices. The form and its required details vary by service, so follow the platform’s own current instructions rather than relying on a generic checklist.

- Open the platform’s official copyright or intellectual-property reporting page.
- Identify the original work you own or are authorized to represent, and describe the exact material you believe copies it.
- Provide the locations of both works as requested, such as the original publication page and the specific page containing the reported material.
- Give the platform a way to contact you and complete the form’s required statements and submission steps.
- Save a copy of what you submitted, the confirmation, and any later communications.
The Copyright Office’s overview explains the general framework, not the current form requirements of any particular service. Check the platform’s own copyright page for its process.
What a report can—and cannot—establish
A platform report is not a legal ruling
A provider may remove or restrict access to reported material under its process, but that response does not decide a court case or conclusively establish who owns the work. A person whose material is removed may send a counter-notice. Under the U.S. Copyright Office’s Section 512 guidance, after a compliant counter-notice a provider may restore access in 10 to 14 business days unless the original sender informs the provider that a court action has been filed.

- Teak Deck, Cherry wood, Basswood material
- Metal assemble accessories, color instructions and 1 set 1/96 lifeboat included
- Accurately laser cut wooden parts, upgrade accessories like metal anchors, brass rings
- 1847 Harvey trading ship model, great gift for ship enthusiasts
If you receive a counter-notice, read the provider’s instructions carefully. Consider qualified legal advice before deciding whether to pursue court action, especially if ownership is disputed or the commercial stakes are significant.
Similarity alone does not settle infringement
The Copyright Claims Board says a claimant needs to show ownership of a valid copyright and unauthorized use. Access to the original and substantial similarity of protected expression can be relevant. Two designs looking alike, by itself, does not establish that the second creator copied protected expression or that a claimant owns the relevant rights.

When comparing designs, distinguish specific original artistic choices from general ideas and functional features. Ship designs can include both expressive artwork and practical or functional elements; document what you believe was copied rather than treating every shared shape or feature as proof.
Ship hull design protection is separate from copyright
In the United States, Title 17’s Vessel Hull Design Protection Act addresses qualifying original designs embodied in actual vessel hulls, including hull-and-deck combinations. It is a separate protection from copyright, with different ownership, eligibility, scope, term, and procedures. The Copyright Office says an application for the described vessel-design protection must be made within two years after the design is made public. A separate copyright registration may be needed for a copyright claim.

This distinction matters when deciding what was copied. A standalone illustration of a ship is not the same thing as a protected design embodied in a vessel hull. If your concern involves the hull design, consult the Copyright Office’s specific vessel-design requirements; do not assume that a platform copyright report or a vessel-design registration substitutes for the other.

For a vessel-design registration deposit, the Copyright Office requires clear and complete drawings or photographs, with enough views to show the design adequately. That is a registration requirement, not a universal checklist for reporting an image to a platform.
