How to Report and Block a Suspicious Dating Profile

Use the dating app’s report controls, preserve relevant screenshots, and choose the right next step for Tinder, Bumble, or Hinge. If you suspect a romance scam, stop contact and report it to the FTC.

Open the profile or conversation in the dating app and use its Report control. Choose the reason that most accurately describes the behavior and provide specific, truthful details. If the app offers Block and Report and you also want to stop contact, use that combined option. The steps and what happens to a match differ by app, so start with the service you use.

Before you report: save useful evidence

If it is safe and practical, take screenshots of the profile and relevant messages before reporting or blocking. A report can remove a profile or conversation from view. Include details that help the service identify the account and understand the behavior:

  • The profile name, age, bio, and photos.
  • The reason for reporting and relevant messages or conversation screenshots.
  • Any known location or contact details, such as a phone number or email address.

Be factual: do not embellish or report someone simply because they stopped replying. Tinder’s guidance distinguishes suspicious or rule-breaking conduct from ordinary non-response. Tinder’s reporting instructions and safety guide describe the information that can help with a report.

How to report on Tinder

From a profile or match

  1. Before matching, open the profile and tap the three-dot menu, then choose Report. Tinder also describes a report button at the bottom of profiles.
  2. After matching, open the chat, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Report.
  3. Follow the prompts, select the closest reason, and provide accurate context.

Tinder says reports are confidential, although the reported person may receive a generic notice that their account is under review. If reporting by email, Tinder asks for the reason, exact profile name, age, bio, and photos; screenshots are best. Known location, phone number, or email may also help. See Tinder’s help instructions.

After an unmatch

Tinder says you can still report someone online after either person has unmatched. Use its online reporting guidance and share identifying details and any relevant evidence you retained.

Blocking

Tinder lists “Block a Profile” in its Safety & Reporting help resources. That category page does not give the steps, so follow the current block instructions in Tinder or its help center. Reporting and blocking are separate actions unless the app presents a combined control.

How to report on Bumble

In the app or on Bumble web

  1. In the app, open the person’s profile, scroll to the bottom, and choose Report or Block and Report.
  2. On Bumble web, use the flag icon labeled Block and Report beneath the profile photo.
  3. Follow the prompts and give the most accurate reason and relevant context.

Bumble says reports are private and anonymous. You can check report progress in the Help Hub. Its reporting instructions cover the available controls.

After an unmatch

If the person has been unmatched and you can no longer access the profile or conversation, contact Bumble Support. Include the person’s name, the reason for your report, and any conversation screenshots you have.

How to report on Hinge

  1. Open the person’s profile or, if they are a match, open the match.
  2. Tap the three dots, choose Report, and select a reason.

Hinge describes reports as confidential and permanent. Reporting removes the profile from your view. If you report from Matches, you also disappear from the other member’s view, and they cannot retrieve the conversation or match. Save relevant evidence first if you can do so safely. Details are in Hinge’s reporting help article.

What to do if you suspect a romance scam

A suspicious profile is not proof of a scam, but requests for money or gifts are a serious warning. The Federal Trade Commission advises people who suspect a romance scam to stop communicating, talk to someone they trust, search for the person’s claimed job along with the word “scammer,” and consider a reverse-image search of the profile picture. Report the profile to the dating app or social platform and file a report with the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

If you sent money by gift card, wire transfer, credit or debit card, or cryptocurrency, contact the relevant company or bank right away and ask whether the transaction can be stopped or refunded. The FTC’s advice is direct: “Never send money or gifts to a sweetheart you haven’t met in person.” Read its romance scam guidance.

What the FTC’s romance-scam figures do—and don’t—show

In 2023, the FTC reported that, among people who said they lost money to a romance scam in the prior year, 40% said the contact started on social media and 19% said it started on a website or app. These figures describe people who reported losing money; they are not estimates of the share of all dating profiles that are fake. See the FTC’s 2023 data spotlight.

How to choose between reporting and blocking

Reporting alerts the service to conduct it should review; blocking is for preventing further contact or visibility. Use both when appropriate, especially when the app offers one combined action. Their effects are not identical across services:

App Where to report After unmatching Effect or follow-up
Tinder Profile or chat menu; a report button may also appear at the bottom of a profile. Online reporting is available after either person unmatches. For email reports, provide the requested identifying details and evidence. Block steps are in Tinder’s current help resources.
Bumble App profile: bottom of profile; web: flag beneath profile photo. The app may offer Block and Report together. Contact Support if the profile or conversation is no longer accessible. Reports are private and anonymous; progress can be checked in the Help Hub.
Hinge Profile or match: three-dot menu, then Report. The cited Hinge instructions describe reporting from a profile or match, but do not specify a separate route after an unmatch. Reporting is confidential and permanent; the profile is removed from view, with additional match and conversation effects when reported from Matches.

Controls and effects can change with app versions or regions. If a menu differs from these instructions, use the service’s current in-app help or support rather than guessing.
