Choose the right reporting route first
The correct procedure depends on who you are, where the video is hosted, what it shows, and what you can prove. Use this decision guide before opening a form.

Do not publicly accuse a person of leaking the game. A takedown or account suspension does not prove that footage was genuine or establish who supplied it.

Why you should not copy or amplify the leak
Re-uploading, mirroring, downloading for redistribution, attaching the video to a quote-post, or publishing screenshots creates another copy and can increase its reach. It can also make you part of the distribution chain rather than a neutral reporter.
You can document enough to locate the post without preserving the video itself. Record the page address exactly as displayed, the uploader’s handle, the title, the upload date and time, and screenshots of the listing. If the page disappears, your notes and screenshots may still help the host or rights holder find related copies.
Use a neutral description such as “video appears to show pre-release GTA VI gameplay.” Do not put plot details or alleged spoiler content in the report subject line. If you accidentally downloaded a file, do not open, edit, or share it; preserve only the information needed to identify the source and follow your organization’s security procedures.

What Rockstar’s published policy says
Rockstar Games Customer Support’s policy, updated January 10, 2025, says Take-Two generally permits some non-commercial fan use that does not intentionally spoil the plot, while reserving the right to remove content. The policy’s specific rule for leaked copies is unambiguous: “Any posting of in-game footage from leaked copies of the game prior to its official release date will be taken down, regardless of how the game was obtained.”
The policy distinguishes ordinary fan gameplay from material that is prohibited or likely to be removed. Its examples include:

- Pre-release footage from a leaked copy.
- Isolated major spoilers.
- Isolated in-game entertainment.
- Instructions for cheating.
- Unauthorized modifications or ports.
The list is not exhaustive and can change. If you are unsure whether a clip is a spoiler or otherwise falls within the policy, Rockstar says to email [email protected] with the scene and its context. The same address can be used for a licensing request; include a detailed description of the proposed use.
“Pre-release” matters. A lawfully released trailer, review copy used under an agreement, or ordinary player-recorded gameplay is not automatically a leak. Describe what you observed and why it appears unauthorized instead of declaring that conclusion as proven fact.

Step-by-step: report a suspected leak as a viewer
- Stop distribution. Do not download, re-upload, mirror, attach, or quote-post the video. Close additional copies and avoid searching for mirrors once you have enough locating information.
- Capture the source details. Save the canonical URL, platform name, uploader handle, video title, and the upload date and time shown on the page. Take screenshots that show the page and account context. Keep the original files and note when you captured them.
- Write a short factual description. State what can be observed, for example, “The post appears to contain pre-release GTA VI gameplay.” Do not speculate about the leaker, the build’s authenticity, or how the uploader obtained it.
- Open the host’s report path. Select the copyright/IP or illegal-content option only if you are the owner or an authorized representative. As a viewer, choose the ordinary report or abuse route and explain that the item appears to be a pre-release leak.
- Attach only necessary evidence. Provide the URL and screenshots requested by the form. Do not upload the leaked video or a screenshot that unnecessarily reveals plot material.
- Notify Rockstar/Take-Two. Email
[email protected]with the URL, account name, displayed date, concise description, and the reason it appears to be pre-release or unauthorized. - Save confirmations. Keep the platform receipt, case number, email copy, screenshots, and a timeline of your actions. Do not repeatedly submit the same report unless the platform asks for more information.
Use the same facts in both reports. Differences in wording are fine; contradictions, exaggerated claims, and unsupported identification of a person can make a report less useful.
How to email Rockstar/Take-Two
The published contact for Rockstar material is [email protected]. Your message should help a reviewer locate the item quickly without reproducing the leak.

Replace each bracketed item with real information before sending; do not include the brackets in your message. If you are asking whether a scene is an allowed spoiler or requesting a license, identify the scene and context and explain the proposed use in detail.
When a formal DMCA-style notice is appropriate
A formal copyright removal request is a legal submission, not a general tip. Only the copyright owner or an authorized agent should make it. If you cannot truthfully state that you own the work or are authorized to act for its owner, use the viewer workflow instead.
A complete notice should contain all of these elements:
- Identify the copyrighted work. Describe the game footage, trailer, image, soundtrack, or other work you own or represent. If multiple works are involved, identify each one clearly.
- Identify the allegedly infringing material and its location. Give the exact URL and any information reasonably sufficient for the platform to find the specific video, post, channel, or file.
- Provide contact information. Include the notifier’s name, address, telephone number, and email address as required by the platform’s form.
- State a good-faith belief. Say that you believe the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
- Make the accuracy and authority declaration. State that the information is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the owner or authorized to act for the owner.
- Sign the notice. Provide a physical or electronic signature.
Identify only material you can locate and support. A request that is incomplete, abusive, or aimed at lawful material may be rejected. Do not use a formal notice to guess who leaked a build or to demand action against unrelated accounts.
YouTube’s copyright process
YouTube treats a copyright removal request as a legal request normally submitted by a copyright owner or an authorized representative. When a request is valid, YouTube can remove the content and apply a copyright strike to the channel.

Some YouTube requests are scheduled. In those cases, the uploader may have seven days to delete the video or seek a retraction before removal takes effect. After removal becomes effective, YouTube provides a counter-notification process for eligible uploaders. A counter-notification is not a reason to exaggerate your original claim; it is part of the platform’s legal process.
YouTube says requests are reviewed using automated systems and human reviewers. Precision matters: identify the exact video, provide the required ownership and contact declarations, and limit the request to material you can establish. Speculation about who leaked the footage does not replace proof of ownership or authorization.
If you are only a viewer, do not select the copyright-owner route merely because the video appears infringing. Use YouTube’s ordinary reporting tool, describe it as a suspected pre-release leak, and send the URL to [email protected].
How to distinguish a leak from a spoiler or ordinary fan video
Not every unwanted GTA VI clip is a copyright leak. Before reporting, classify what you actually saw:
- Suspected pre-release leak: footage claims to come from a copy before the official release date, or shows unreleased gameplay without an apparent authorized source.
- Ordinary spoiler: footage or discussion from an officially released game or authorized material that reveals plot information. Use the platform’s spoiler or community rules where available.
- Authorized promotion: an official trailer, event presentation, press item, or other publication that appears to come from an authorized account.
- Other infringement: unauthorized uploads of released gameplay, music, artwork, or edited compilations. The rights owner or authorized agent should evaluate the specific work and rights involved.
Use qualifying language when the source is uncertain: “appears to,” “claims to show,” and “I cannot verify authenticity.” Reporting a lead does not require you to prove the clip is genuine, but it does require you to avoid presenting an unverified allegation as fact.
Evidence, privacy, and record-keeping
Keep an evidence log with the URL, platform, handle, title, displayed date and time, the date and time you captured the page, and the report confirmation number. Store screenshots in their original form and avoid editing them in a way that could remove context. If the platform asks for a file upload, provide only what its instructions require.
Do not publish another person’s private information, attempt to hack an uploader’s account, contact the alleged leaker, or organize harassment. Do not expose plot details in public posts made to “warn” others; that still spreads the material.
Preserve messages separately when the matter includes extortion, threats, account compromise, payment demands, or other suspected crimes. Include timestamps, usernames, payment instructions, and original message files when contacting law enforcement. Report the content to the platform and rights holder as well, but keep criminal allegations limited to facts you can document.
Legal boundaries and criminal infringement
U.S. criminal copyright rules are fact-specific. Section 506 of Title 17 describes categories involving willful infringement for commercial advantage or private financial gain; reproduction or distribution of a qualifying value within 180 days; and distribution of a work being prepared for commercial distribution when statutory conditions are met.
The statute also says that evidence of reproduction or distribution alone is insufficient to establish willfulness. Therefore, a viewer should not label an uploader a criminal or demand an arrest based solely on a clip. A platform report or rights-holder notice is not a criminal finding.
For a viewer, law-enforcement escalation is appropriate for a separate issue—such as extortion, threats, account takeover, or another suspected offense—not simply because a copyright complaint exists. Provide factual evidence and let the relevant authorities determine jurisdiction and legal classification.
Common mistakes that weaken a report
- Reposting “for evidence.” This creates another copy and increases exposure. Give the original URL and screenshots instead.
- Using a copyright form without authority. A viewer cannot truthfully sign an owner-or-agent declaration.
- Guessing the source. Do not name an alleged leaker, employee, tester, or hacker without verified evidence.
- Overstating authenticity. A takedown, strike, or removed account does not prove the video was genuine.
- Submitting vague locations. A channel name without the exact video URL may not let a reviewer find the material.
- Including unnecessary spoilers. Keep the report neutral and limit screenshots to what is needed for identification.
- Sending repeated or contradictory complaints. One accurate report with a case number is more useful than a flood of changing allegations.
What happens after you report
The platform may remove the post, restrict its visibility, request more information, reject the report, or take no visible action. You may receive a confirmation or case number; keep it with your notes. The rights holder may independently request removal, ask for context, or decide that the material does not violate its policy.
Do not interpret silence, a delayed response, or a removal as proof of authenticity. Platforms and rights holders may not disclose their internal review, and a single URL can be copied elsewhere. If you discover a new mirror, record its URL and submit a separate, factual report without linking the copies together publicly.
