YouTube receives the stream from the encoder; a YouTube playlist is a separate collection of videos. The exact replacement controls and whether a change interrupts the stream depend on the remote playout software.
Where do I change the video that’s playing in my YouTube livestream?
Find the system that is producing and sending the video. If a remote machine or cloud playout service feeds an encoder, use that system’s schedule, queue, or source controls to replace the current item or change what plays next. YouTube’s encoder guide describes the encoder connecting to YouTube with a server URL and stream key; those settings determine the destination, not which file plays.

YouTube explains: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” The encoder may be software or hardware; a physical hardware encoder is not universally required. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

First, identify which kind of playlist you mean
A YouTube playlist in Studio
A YouTube playlist is a viewer-facing collection of videos managed in YouTube Studio. Editing that collection does not, according to YouTube’s guidance, replace media already being sent by an external encoder. See YouTube Help: Create and manage playlists.

A remote playout queue
A remote playout queue is the list or schedule in the system generating the outgoing stream. Change the current source or queued item there, using that product’s documented replacement, next-item, playlist-reload, or source-switch control if available. Keep the encoder’s YouTube destination and stream key configured as before unless the provider’s instructions require otherwise.
An HLS Media Playlist
In YouTube’s HLS ingestion protocol, a Media Playlist is a technical file that lists media segments in stream order. It is not a YouTube Studio playlist. Google’s HLS guide says each media segment represents a brief portion of the stream lasting between one and four seconds. That guide is written for encoder vendors, not as a universal instruction for changing a third-party playout queue: YouTube Live Streaming API: HLS ingestion.

Replace an item without guessing at provider-specific controls
- Confirm the active workflow. Identify the server, hosted playout service, or encoder currently producing the public stream. Check where its media queue or schedule is managed.
- Check the provider’s instructions. Look for whether it supports replacing the current item while output remains connected, changing only the next item, or reloading a playlist. Do not assume that editing a YouTube playlist changes the encoder’s source.
- Verify change timing and transitions. Confirm whether the update takes effect immediately or at the next item, what viewers will see during the transition, and whether the service requires an encoder restart. These behaviors depend on the product; YouTube’s general encoder documentation does not define them.
- Test safely where possible. If the stream is important, test the workflow on a non-critical stream or at a low-risk time before changing the public output. Use the provider’s monitoring tools to confirm that the intended video is playing and the stream remains connected.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as confidential. YouTube’s standard encoder setup uses the key to connect the encoder to the stream, and Google’s HLS guide describes it as identifying the creator and stream.
If the workflow uses HLS, follow the encoder vendor’s implementation instructions as well as Google’s protocol requirements. The HLS guide specifies muxed M2TS audio/video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, up to 60 fps, HTTPS, a single encoded stream, and Media Playlists rather than Master Playlists. These are HLS ingestion requirements, not generic steps for swapping a file in another product.
What to verify before choosing a workflow
- Playlist location: Is the content list a YouTube Studio collection or a server-side playout queue?
- Delivery method: Is the remote system sending through software or hardware encoding, and which protocol does it use?
- Live replacement: Does the specific playout product support changing the current item without disconnecting its output?
- Transition and restart: Does the change happen now or at the next item, and is a restart necessary?
- Access and monitoring: Can an operator reach the queue remotely and verify the outgoing content?
- Safe testing: Can you test the change without disrupting the public stream?
YouTube’s documentation supports the distinction between its playlist feature and an encoder’s outgoing stream. The other operational details must be checked with the provider of the remote playout system.
