To stream a prerecorded video to YouTube from an Indian VPS, run an encoder such as FFmpeg on the server, play the file at real-time speed, and send the feed to YouTube’s live ingestion server using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Choose settings the VPS can sustain, leave bandwidth headroom, and verify the preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast.
Before you start
You need a YouTube channel eligible to go live, a VPS that can sustain the stream, a media file on that VPS, and an encoder configured with the current ingestion URL and stream key. YouTube says encoder streaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days; check eligibility and current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming guide.

- VPS: Confirm the provider permits continuous outbound streaming and check sustained network capacity, transfer allowance, CPU, storage and total cost for your planned streaming hours. No particular Indian provider or current VPS plan is established here as the best choice.
- Video file: Upload it to the VPS and confirm it has the expected picture and audio. Allow disk space for the file and any local recording you plan to keep.
- Encoder: FFmpeg can read a file in real time and send an encoded feed over RTMP or RTMPS.
- YouTube settings: Create or select the live event in YouTube Studio and obtain the server URL and stream key from its live stream settings.
Choose settings your VPS can handle
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings for the complete table and the settings for your intended resolution and frame rate.
Examples from YouTube’s recommended bitrate table, accessed in 2026:

- CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)
| Output | H.264 recommended video bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or deliver them reliably. Choose a bitrate for the intended codec, resolution and frame rate, then account for audio and leave roughly 20% upload bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate, as YouTube’s streaming tips recommend. An advertised port speed alone does not establish sustained capacity.
Set up the YouTube event and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select the event.
- Check that the channel is eligible to stream, including verification and absence of a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy the current server URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. Use the exact values shown for that event.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, commit it to a public script or expose it in public logs. Store it securely. If you reset the key, update the encoder with the new one. YouTube explains stream-key management in its live stream settings guide.
Send the prerecorded file with FFmpeg
First, place the media file on the VPS and inspect it. If it is already compatible with the chosen streaming setup, passing through its video and audio can reduce CPU demand. If it needs transcoding, encoding consumes CPU; do not assume a low-cost VPS can handle a particular resolution or frame rate without testing.

- 2 × USB 3. 0 ports, 2 x USB 2. 0 Ports
- 2 × micro HDMI ports supproting up to 4Kp60 video resolution
- Micro SD card slot for loading operating system and data storage
FFmpeg’s documented RTMP workflow uses a real-time input, H.264 video, AAC audio and FLV output. A command-line outline is:
ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -r 30 -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

- Broadcom BCM2711, Quad core Cortex-A72 (ARM v8) 64-bit SoC @ 1.5GHz
- 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB LPDDR4-3200 SDRAM (depending on model)
- 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz IEEE 802.11ac wireless, Bluetooth 5.0, BLE Gigabit Ethernet
- 2 USB 3.0 ports; 2 USB 2.0 ports.
- Raspberry Pi standard 40 pin GPIO header (fully backwards compatible with previous boards)
This is an illustrative H.264/AAC example, not a universal preset. Here -re reads the file at its natural rate rather than sending it as fast as possible; -r 30 requests 30 fps; and -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, equivalent to a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps. The 8 Mbps video bitrate matches YouTube’s recommendation for 720p30 H.264, but you must select the bitrate and output settings for your actual target. Replace the destination with the current YouTube server URL and key; avoid putting a real key in shell history or public logs. Consult FFmpeg’s format documentation for RTMP options, including recovery behavior after temporary network failure.
If the source is already compatible and you have verified that its parameters meet YouTube’s requirements, an alternative is to copy its streams rather than transcode. This reduces encoding work but does not fix incompatible codecs, bitrate, frame rate or keyframe spacing; validate the resulting feed before the event.

Test and monitor before and during the broadcast
- Start the encoder early enough to troubleshoot. Confirm the VPS has disk space and that CPU and outbound network use remain stable under the actual workload.
- Check the event’s Live Control Room preview and stream health before treating the event as live. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and sound.
- Watch for dropped frames, network interruptions, unexpected CPU saturation, missing audio or a blank/incorrect picture. Monitor throughout the stream rather than assuming a successful start guarantees stability.
- When finished, end the event in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Select an Indian VPS by workload, not headline price
There is no single VPS size that can be recommended for every prerecorded stream. A file sent without transcoding has different CPU needs from one encoded in software, while resolution, frame rate, codec and duration change bitrate and transfer requirements.
- Sustained outbound capacity: Check that the connection can carry the total configured audio and video bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended approximate 20% headroom.
- Transfer allowance: Estimate total traffic for the planned hours and check quota, fair-use terms and any transfer charges.
- CPU: If FFmpeg must transcode, test the selected instance with the real file and output settings. A prerecorded source does not eliminate encoding work.
- Storage: Allow for the source media and any local output or recording.
- Reliability and terms: Verify India-region availability, network reliability and whether continuous outbound streaming is allowed. Do not treat a provider’s advertised port speed as proof of sustained throughput.
- Full cost: Compare the total price for the planned duration, including transfer and storage charges, rather than only the advertised monthly VPS rate.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no feed | Wrong ingestion URL or key, event not ready, or outbound connection failure | Copy the current server URL and key from the event settings; confirm the encoder is running and the VPS can make outbound connections. |
| Stream health is poor or frames drop | Insufficient sustained bandwidth, no headroom, or VPS resource limits | Check outbound usage and CPU; reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate to a supported setting and retest. |
| Video or audio is missing | Unexpected source tracks, incompatible encoding or incorrect mapping | Inspect the file before streaming and verify the preview includes the expected picture and sound. |
| Stream stops after a network interruption | Temporary network failure or encoder does not recover | Check VPS connectivity and encoder logs. FFmpeg’s RTMP format options include recovery-related behavior, but recovery does not replace monitoring or a stable connection. |
| Encoder overloads the VPS | Software transcoding exceeds available CPU | Test representative output settings, use compatible source streams without transcoding when appropriate, or choose a VPS with adequate CPU capacity. |
| Stream key no longer works | Key was reset or the wrong event key is configured | Check YouTube Studio’s current stream settings and update the encoder securely. |
Copyright, reused content and live-stream eligibility
Only stream material you have the rights or permissions to broadcast. A prerecorded video can still trigger copyright enforcement; using an encoder does not make copyrighted material safe to rebroadcast. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility rules also apply to the channel, including the verification and restriction checks above. Review YouTube’s current policy and event settings before scheduling, and do not assume that a successful technical preview means the content complies with YouTube’s rules or is eligible for monetization.
