You can replace the Sony WH-1000XM5 ear pads yourself, but Sony recommends using an Authorized Service Center. If you proceed at home, use replacement pads and the specified disassembling tool, release the six clips gently, and keep your fingers and tools away from the exposed driver. Once installed, adjust the headband slider and earcups so the pads sit snugly around your ears.
Before you start
Sony says owners can replace the WH-1000XM5 earpads, but recommends having the work done by an Authorized Service Center. Its model-specific instructions call for replacement earpads and a disassembling tool, sold separately. - Get replacement pads intended for the WH-1000XM5 and the disassembling tool specified by Sony. Sony’s parts distributor lists a model-specific earpad assembly, but a listing does not confirm current stock or availability in every country: Sony parts listing.
- Work with the headphones switched off.
- Have a clean, well-lit workspace so you can see the small clips and avoid the exposed driver.
How to remove and install the WH-1000XM5 ear pads
- Turn off the headphones. Do not start while they are powered on.
- Locate the clips. Hold the housing plate steady and trace the inner edge of the cushion to find its six attachment claws. Sony’s instructions show their approximate positions around the earcup.
- Release the old pad gradually. Insert the disassembling tool behind the earpad plate at Sony’s indicated location, between claws. Lift gently until one claw releases, then work around the perimeter in small steps. Do not pull on the cushion itself or lever against the housing block.
- Protect the exposed driver and check the cushioning material. Once the pad is off, avoid touching the driver. Check that the cushioning material over the housing remains in place. Sony warns that if it comes off or is positioned incorrectly, noise cancellation may work poorly and echo may occur. Reposition it carefully without touching internal parts.
- Orient the new pad correctly. Match the L or R marking and the pad’s uneven features to the corresponding earcup. Align the two pegs on the back of the pad with the two small holes in the housing. If the claws do not line up, the pad is not oriented correctly; do not force it.
- Seat and check the pad. Press around the pad until all six claws click into place. Gently pull the pad to confirm it is secure, then smooth any wrinkles as Sony instructs.

Adjust the fit after replacement
Sony’s WH-1000XM5 Help Guide recommends extending the slider fully before putting the headphones on, then adjusting it until the headband touches the top of your head. Rotate the left and right earcups until the pads fit snugly all around your ears. Sony warns that failing to adjust the slider can cause discomfort or weak noise cancellation. If the pads are installed correctly but the fit still feels wrong, first recheck slider length and earcup angle. A replacement pad’s material or thickness may change how it feels, but the available sources do not establish that a thicker or softer pad will improve comfort for every listener.
Choosing between service, genuine pads, and third-party pads

When to stop and get help
- A claw will not release with gentle pressure, or the pad does not align without force.
- The cushioning material underneath has shifted and you cannot restore it confidently.
- The exposed driver has been touched or damaged, or the headphone’s noise cancellation behaves abnormally after replacement.
- You would rather avoid the risk of damaging the housing or internal parts.
In these cases, stop and contact an Authorized Service Center rather than applying more force.
