For better noise cancelling and sound on the Sony WH-1000XM5, start with a comfortable, snug fit, then use Sony’s Sound Connect app to choose noise canceling or ambient sound and adjust the equalizer to your taste. If the headphones keep changing modes or pausing audio unexpectedly, review the app’s automatic features.
How do I get better noise canceling on my Sony WH-1000XM5?
- Fit the headphones comfortably. Adjust the headband and earcups so they sit snugly around your ears. Sony recommends a snug fit to support sound isolation; do not tighten or position them in a way that causes discomfort.
- Open Sony Sound Connect on your smartphone. Sony identifies Sound Connect as the app for customizing the WH-1000XM5’s ambient sound control, equalizer, Speak-to-Chat and other settings. Sony says there is no PC app; settings configured in the smartphone app carry over to a PC for the listed functions.
- Choose a listening mode for the situation. Select Noise Canceling when you want to reduce surrounding noise, or Ambient Sound when you want more awareness of what is happening around you. Sony’s setup guidance for the WH-1000XM5 describes a snug fit as part of sound isolation.
- Listen before changing more settings. Try a familiar track or a typical noisy environment to judge whether the mode and fit suit you. Noise canceling reduces ambient noise; it should not be treated as a way to eliminate every sound.
Noise canceling or ambient sound: which should you choose?
| Mode | What it is for | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Noise Canceling | Reduces ambient noise. | You want to focus on music, a podcast or other audio with less surrounding noise. |
| Ambient Sound | Lets in more or less surrounding sound, depending on its setting. | You want to remain more aware of people or activity around you. |
These modes serve different needs, so there is no single best choice for every setting. If you prefer consistent noise canceling, check whether an automatic profile is switching the listening experience.

Which EQ setting should I use?
The equalizer changes the balance of frequencies in the sound. Sony’s app offers ways to tune the presentation toward preferences such as warmer or softer, brighter or more energetic, more vocal-focused, or more bass- or treble-forward sound. Those are tonal choices, not objective rankings of sound quality.
- Start from a neutral or familiar setting, then make small adjustments.
- Use tracks you know well so you can hear what a change actually does.
- If vocals, bass or treble seem too prominent, adjust the relevant balance rather than applying a large change across the whole sound.
- Keep in mind that a setting that suits one recording or genre may not suit another.
Sony’s WH-1000XM5 product page lists the equalizer among the headphones’ app-supported features. Sony does not establish one universally best EQ curve.

Why do the headphones change how they sound?
Sound Connect includes automatic features that can affect listening behavior. Sony lists Adaptive Sound Control and Speak-to-Chat among its app features. Adaptive Sound Control can adjust ambient sound settings based on activity or location; Speak-to-Chat can pause or change playback when it detects that you are speaking.
If noise canceling changes when you move, or audio pauses during conversation, review those features in Sound Connect and configure them to match your habits. If you want to choose a mode yourself, disable or revise the automatic behavior that is overriding that choice. Menu labels and available controls can vary with app or firmware updates, so use the current Sound Connect app and Sony help guide for the exact controls on your device.

What should I expect from battery life?
Sony specifies up to 30 hours of playback with noise canceling on for the WH-1000XM5. That is a manufacturer-stated maximum, not a guaranteed runtime for every listener or use pattern. Sony also documents quick charging with a USB-PD-compatible charger; that charger type is relevant to charging, not to improving sound or noise cancellation.
